Saturday, August 15th is the celebration of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

  • Dr. Wallace Hamilton tells a story about a man who had lived on the same farm all his life, who grew tired of it. Nothing about the place suited him, and at last he made up his mind he would sell it and buy another more to his liking. He listed the farm with a real estate broker, who at once prepared a sales advertisement for the newspaper. Before turning in the copy, he read to the man the flattering description of the property which he had prepared. He talked of the farm’s advantages: its ideal location; its up-to-date equipment; its fertile acres; its well-bred livestock. “Wait a minute,” said the farmer; “read that again, and take it slow.” So the salesman re-read the description. “Changed my mind,” said the farmer. “I’m not going to sell. All my life I’ve been looking for a place just like that.”

“This is enough, O Lord!” The prophet Elijah had spoken boldly to the royal family, he had taken on a hundred prophets of the pagan god Baal and proved them false. He had journeyed throughout the region calling on the people to return to following the true God. And he was worn out. In today’s first reading, we read that he is ready to give up. After all his hard work, it did not seem that much had changed. It was easy to be a pessimist.

The remarkable truth is that God never shares our pessimism. He is always sure that good is coming our way. His answer to Elijah was to get up and get back to work. After sending an angel to feed him, he sent him off to anoint new kings to rule the people, and a new prophet, Elisha, who would continue his work.

No matter how good-natured we may be, there are times when it seems that life is wearing us down to a point that the only response has to be, “Enough!” Perhaps we’ve been disappointed by someone we trusted. It may be the burdens of bad

health or physical problems. Often, we are so familiar with the things around us that we don’t like that our focus on the problems keeps us from seeing all the blessings and goodness that surround us.

God is so optimistic that no matter what the situation, he knows there is always good to be accomplished. When the world worry us and we want to give up, God has other plans. We just have to get up and get back to work.

There are people whose hatred for others leads them to terrible acts of terror and violence. But, we can decide that we are going to be an instrument of peace through our decision to turn aside anger with patience and kindness.

The evidence of how indifferent our society has become to the value of the life of the unborn, the sick and the elderly continues to horrify us. Volunteer to give time or money to a program supporting mothers who choose to keep their baby. “Adopt” a lonely neighbor to be an honorary grandparent and invite them to share special times with your family.

Young people carry our hope for the future. They face temptations and influences that most adults never knew as they grew up. They need a place of encouragement and acceptance in their home. They need coaches and mentors to help them discover their hidden talents. They need generous hearts to inspire them with stories of faith as their teachers.

There are plenty of reasons to be pessimistic as we consider the world situation and the troubles of life. But, God does not accept that attitude. He is inviting us every day to be realistic about the challenges we face, but not so that we give up. He wants us to get up and get to work, doing something to make the world a better place.
