The words of the gospel today sound like the script for a science fiction movie, with dramatic signs appearing in the heavens that are so disturbing that people are dying of fright. It’s almost as if Jesus is trying to scare the hell out of us! But, his words tell us that this is not the case. Jesus says that when such signs appear, we should stand up tall and look up, because salvation is near at hand.

A photographer was once taking a picture of a woman. He said, “OK. Now give me a big, beautiful smile for the camera.” After he had snapped several photographs, he told her, “OK, ma’am, now you can resume your usual face.”

Today we begin the season of Advent. And because Advent is so near to our celebration of Christmas, we sometimes assume it is similar to the season of Lent, during which we prepare to celebrate Easter. So, the Advent penitential season is seen to fit right in with the gradual appearance of Christmas music and decorations during this time of the year, as a time to get ready to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

But, for the first few weeks, the readings and prayers of Advent will focus our attention on something much more important than the Christmas celebrations to come. They focus on the coming of Jesus, at the end of the world, but also the coming of Jesus for us personally at the end of our time in this world. The constant theme is that we must prepare, for the time of his return cannot be known.

We know that this is true for our self and everyone. But, it is hard to truly focus everything in our life on being prepared. There’s work to do, and people to enjoy, and distractions everywhere. It is not possible to live every moment making sure we are perfectly ready for the Lord to come take us home.

Of course there are times when we “smile for the camera.” It happens after we’ve gone to confession and we decide we are not going to be back with the same sins the next time. Or, we are ashamed of what we said or how we treated someone, so we decide we are not going to be that way the next time we see them. A sermon inspires us and we decide that we are going to be more generous, or more welcoming, or more prayerful and close to God.

But, then we “resume our usual face.” We live in the real world, full of distractions and challenges to our good intentions. When we’re tired, we get grouchy. When we’re busy, we don’t want to be pulled away from what we are doing to help someone else. When we’ve told someone over and over not to do something, we reach our limit of patience and forgiveness.

But, the Lord is coming. We are reminded especially during Advent that we have to be ready always because the time of our departure is not known. During just this week of Advent, our challenge can be to lift up our head and go through each day with a big “smile for the camera.” It could be as simple as putting a smile on our face for everyone – our family, our friends, even a stranger. That attitude of good will reflected in our smile can be carried over into patience, generosity in how we judge others, a decision to look for a special way to bless someone else by our words or actions.

And who knows, if we spend a whole week with a smile on our face, when we “resume our usual face,” the smile will still be there. A simple change that makes us better prepared when the Lord returns.

Peregrinación GuadalupeEl próximo 5 de Diciembre se llevara a cabo la peregrinación Guadalupana, en Italy, Texas. La comunidad de Santa Mónica está planeando ir en grupo a la peregrinación. Queremos reservar un autobús y para poder hacerlo necesitamos saber cuántas personas están interesadas en asistir. El autobús saldrá a las 5am. y regresara a medio día. Hay un costo de $10 por persona. Por favor reserve su espacio antes del 29 de Noviembre. El resto de los peregrinos pueden seguir en sus propios carros. Posada y Natividad vivienteEl domingo, 13 de Diciembre tendremos una posada y Nacimiento con animales vivos para recordar nuestras tradiciones y reconocer el motivo principal de estas celebraciones decembrinas. Venga con toda su familia a celebrar a gozarse de esta hermosa tradición. El evento inicia a las 6 pm en la Cafetería. Habrá Posada, Villancicos, Comida, Piñata y mucho más… Les esperamos.

Las palabras del evangelio de hoy se escuchan como un escrito de una película de ficción, con signos dramáticos que aparecen en el cielo que son tan alarmantes que pueden morirse de miedo. Es como si Jesús estuviera tratando de espantarnos! Pero sus palabras nos dicen que este no es el caso. Nos dice Jesús que cuando tales signos aparecen, debemos pararnos y mirar porque la salvación está cerca.

Un fotógrafo estaba tomando una fotografía de una mujer. Dijo, “Ok, ahora dame una sonrisa grande y hermosa para la cámara.” Después de tomar varias fotografías, él le dijo, “Ok, señora, ahora puede poner su cara normal.”

Hoy comenzamos el tiempo de Adviento y porque Adviento está tan cerca de la celebración Navideña a menudo asumimos que esta es una temporada parecida a la cuaresma, durante la cual nos preparamos para la Pascua. Entonces, la temporada penitencial de Adviento cabe bien en la apariencia de la música y decoración navideña durante esta temporada del año, como un tiempo para prepararnos para celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador.

Pero, durante las primeras semanas, las lecturas y oraciones de Adviento enfocaran nuestra atención en algo más importante que las celebraciones navideñas que se aproximan. Se enfocaran en la venida de Jesús, al final de los tiempos, pero también en la venida de Jesús al final de nuestra vida. El Lema constante es que debemos estar preparados, porque el tiempo de su regreso es indefinido.

Sabemos que esto es verdad para nosotros y para todos. Pero es difícil enfocarnos en toda nuestra vida para estar preparados. Hay que trabajar, disfrutar a las personas y distracciones por doquier. No es posible vivir cada momento asegurándose que estamos listos para cuando el Señor nos llame a su

Casa. Claro hay tiempos cuando

“sonreímos a la cámara.” Sucede cuando vamos a la confesión y decidimos no volver con los mismos pecados. Cuando nos avergonzamos de lo que dijimos o como tratamos alguien, entonces decidimos no hacerlo nuevamente. Nos inspira un sermón y decidimos que vamos a ser más generosos, más hospitalarios o más orantes y cercanos a Dios.

Pero, cuando volvemos “a nuestra cara normal.” Vivimos en el mundo real, lleno de distracciones, retos hacia nuestras buenas intenciones. Cuando nos cansamos, nos ponemos gruñones. Cuando estamos ocupados, no queremos que nos muevan de nuestro lugar para ayudar alguien más. Cuando le decimos alguien una y otra vez que no haga algo, llegamos al límite de nuestra paciencia y perdón.

Pero, el Señor viene. Se nos recuerda especialmente en Adviento que debemos estar siempre listos para porque el tiempo de nuestra partida es incierta. Durante esta semana de Adviento, nuestro reto puede ser que todos los días levantemos la cabeza y demos una enorme “sonrisa a la cámara.” Puede ser tan simple como poner una sonrisa en nuestro rostro para todos, nuestra familia, amigos hasta un extraño. Nuestra buena actitud puede reflejarse en la paciencia, generosidad, en como juzgamos a otros, en una decisión en mirar una manera especial de bendecida alguien a través de nuestras palabras y acciones

Y quien sabe, si durante toda la semana sonreímos, cuando volvamos a nuestra “cara normal” la sonrisa puede permanecer. Un simple cambio para ser mejores para cuando el Señor vuelva.
