“High-Five” Rule

Because of the amount of small group work, experiments, and projects that we will complete in class, it is important that I have a way of getting your attention quickly.

What are reasons why it is important for me to have a sign with you that helps get your attention quickly?

I will hold five fingers up and call out “5-4-3-2-1,” putting each of the fingers down until I reach “1.” When I reach “1,” the whole class should be silent so that I can give further directions, or I can remind you to quiet down so we can continue with our fun activities.

Textbooks

You are NOT required to bring your textbook to every class.

You may keep your textbooks in your lockers unless I specifically tell you to bring them to class.

When I assign homework readings or questions from the textbook, you are allowed to take your textbooks home.

Information about the Science Lab

Just a reminder that you will have Science 4 times per week instead of 5. The reason for this is that you have a double period once per week. This double period is most often used for doing experiments, small group work, and crafts, which tend to make the volume in the classroom louder.

Reminder: It is especially important to be on your best behavior and aware of the “High 5” rule when we are in the Science Lab. (Room 203)

We will also have a “Lab Safety Day” where we look at the equipment that we will be using during Science labs and make sure that we are behaving in ways that we will be safe in the Science Lab.

End of Year Awards

Every class including mine has awards given at the end of the year:

One for “Highest Achievement,” given to the student(s) with the highest grade point average in the class.

One called the “Teacher’s Award,” given to the student(s) to reward positive attitudes, work ethic, and improvement during the year.

I hope this will motivate you to set goals for this year!

Create Your Own “Getting to Know You”

quiz! Remember to write your name, grade, and

class at the top of your paper.

Write 10 statements about yourself. (Make some true and some false.) Try to choose statements that your classmates might not know about you.

I will collect these and each person will have the opportunity to present their quiz to the class so that everyone in the class can guess which answers are true about that person.

Did You Know? Bingo

This will be an activity to practice the “High Five” rule and to get to know interesting facts about our classmates.

Get up and walk around the classroom, and try to find a classmate who has accomplished something in each of the boxes. Have that classmate sign his or her name to fill in the blank if he or she can complete the statement. When you have five boxes in a row, (whether across, down, or diagonally, hold two fingers up,) and I will use the “High Five” rule to help you silently return to your seats so that we can hear the bingo results.

Please write your names in your textbooks tonight. I ask you to bring your textbooks to class next time, and I will check to make sure that you have done so.

Bring your textbook to the next class!
