Scholarship Vocabulary

What does it all mean?

Scholarship

• based on academic achievement

• non-repayable money based on merit

• the higher the value of the scholarship

the more involved the application is

Bursary

• non repayable money based on financial need and achievement

Awards

• cash or trophy usually funded by private foundations

Most applications ask for the following information:

1) Academics: good marks = money

Need a credit history or official transcripts

2) Leadership Activities – community service

volunteer work, team leader, school leader

camp counselor (you don’t get paid)

3) Athletic – most Canadian schools don’t offer purely athletic scholarships

4) They are looking for well rounded students

One chance to make a first impression.

• Go to this website; a lot of valuable information on how to get a scholarship

• Go to www.sachs.ab.ca for all sorts of important information.

Where do I go for scholarship information?

• Our school website• Announcements (daily)• Check out any service clubs that you or your

parents belong to. • Check out your place of work or your parent’s

place of work. • See Mr. Rieger or Mr. Cross for help.• Clubs or teams that you belong to.

Stay on top of deadlines for registration and scholarships

• U of A – most faculties are spring

• Apply right after 1st term marks are in.

• MacEwan started taking applications Oct. 1

• Concordia – spring deadlines

• NAIT – March 31 for some – need a career investigation for some programs
