Passage Study:★English is a language spoken all around the world--All around = all over 各处 到处 在整个… eg: Soon the news is all around America.--“Spoken all around the world “ 是过去分词(past participate phrase) 作定语 (Attribute)表示被动 (passive), 其完整句子是 :Which is spoken all around the world. “ which “ 省略 .eg I still remembered the news broadcast yesterday.

★There are more than 42 countries where the majority of the people speak English.--more than(1) 后跟数词表示”超过 , 多于” overEg : By then he was more than 50 years old.(2) 后跟名词 (noun), 形容词 (adj.), 副词 (adv) ，动词 (verb) 表示“不止是，非常，岂之”等 . Very ,very much Eg: Peace is much more than the absence of war.( 和平不仅意味着没有战争）She speaks English more than fluently. （她的英语何止流利那简直是相当地道）Some other phrases connected with “ than “More …than （比…更） no less than （不少于，至少） less than （比…更） no more than （至多，不少于）

★ In total, for more than 375 millon people English is their mother tongue.

★ An equal number of people learn English as a second language.--- equal (1) adj. the same (in quality, size, degree, grade, level, etc. )( 质量，大小，程度，等级，水平等）相等的．Eg: Women and men should get equal pay for equal work.(2) V. (of size or numbers ) to be the same as 　等于，比得上Eg: Two plus two equals four.--- a number of : some many 一些，若干　（后跟复数名词 plural noun 或代词 pronoun ）　Eg: A small of friends went to see him when he was ill.他生病期间为数不多的朋友去看望过他

IV. Discussion

After reading the passage, we have learnt so much about English around the world. Do you think it is necessary to have a good knowledge of English? Why do you think so? Dose it mean English learning should be paid more attention to than Chinese study? Please discuss these questions in groups!
