COMMON QUESTIONS
EMERGENCIESIn case of an earthquake or tsunami we urge you to evacuate to our “Tsunami Bridge” which is located in the back of the resort behind the Game Room. Our “Tsunami Bridge” winds for over 400 yards to a 50 meter hill in the center of the island presumably high enough to escape the largest run ups predicted. If there is time and it is convenienet we ask all guests to get into the nearest avail-able boat and head for deep water if possible.
BOATSOur ultimate goal is to provide our guests the most authentic Mentawai experience possible and our core mode of transportation achieves
this. Our standard mode of transport utilizes three luxury canoes capable of cruising at a very comfortable 20 knots which is really all we need due to the geographic proximity to most of the surf spots and various sites we visit. Two of the luxury canoes sport 2 x 40 hp engines and can take up to 8 surfers comfortably. Our larg-est dug out luxury canoe is 37 feet long, can accommodate up to 10 people and has 3 x 40 hp engines...All canoes have the necessary safety and communication equipment in case of emergencies. Kandui also uses two tenders and two Yamaha VX700 waverunners to shuttle peo-ple around our immediate area. There is no set schedule for boat trips to surf breaks – on a typical morning we have one boat that will leave early and another that leaves
around 8:00am if we are not surfing in our immediate vicinity.
COMMUNICATIONInternet connectivity is free giving you the option of staying in touch with your family, friends, and the office. Our internet connection is probably slower than what you are used to at home but our wireless connection covers a large portion of the resort including inside each uma so you can get online throughout the resort. We encourage most people to use their personal laptops inside their umas if you’d like to get online. If you don’t want to bring along a lap-top there are a few computers at the resort available to check surf reports, send e-mails, and make phone calls.

ILLEGAL SUBSTANCESOur operation is drug free. Indonesia has some of the strictest laws against drug use, drug trafficking, drug anything! Kandui Resort does not condone drug use in any form at our resort - guests who are found to be using drugs at the resort will be asked to leave immdeiately. It’s just not worth the hassle and trouble! Our policy is simple - no drugs allowed... please.
LOCAL CLIMATEThe local climate is considered tropical,
hot, and humid with a temperature range between 70 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit
or 21 - 32 degrees Celsius.
The water temperature is always around 80 degrees (27 degrees Celsius) no matter what time of year you visit.
The local landscape is dense, tropical forest with four main islands and doz-
ens of auxiliary islands - sprinkled with a few main coastal villages throughout.
The dry season in this area spans from
February to September and the wet season typically occurs between October - January. At any time of the year however expect reg-
ular rainfall in short intervals - heavy at times.
Local winds surrounding the resort are variable throughout most of the year
but occasionally go through intermittent periods of storminess, called “Badai’s”.
Kandui lies exactly 1 degree below the Equator and as a result is not influenced by the steady easterly trade winds often
associated with the rest of Indonesia - that’s what makes this area so unique!

T he Mentawai Islands are one of the most consistent surf destinations in the entire world. It’s broad exposure towards the vast, southern Indian Ocean provides these
majestic islands with remarkable consistency and quality. There are great waves in this area YEAR-ROUND. However, the most ideal time to surf in the Mentawai’s is during the dry season, late March to early November, the southern hemisphere’s winter, when the Indian Ocean is an ultra-active, groundswell producing machine. During the entire year Kandui Resort offers the average surfer the opportunity to score the best waves of their lives in the premiere surf resort location in the entire world, nothing else comes close...

4 BOBS: 4 Bobs is a short, play-
ful right-hander located directly
in front of Kandui Resort. Swells
that break here wrap considerably
around the south end of the island
and break over a relatively shallow
reef. If you’re fast you can take off
deep and try to float the first sec-
tion where most people take off;
otherwise, it’s strictly a one or two
turn wave. Ironically, despite it’s
relatively tame appeal, 4 Bobs is
a perennial favorite to almost every
person who surfs it and is one of
the most consistent and fun waves
in the Mentawais.
A FRAMES: A Frames is one
of the most consistent lefts in
the Mentawai Islands. Situated in
front of an idyllic island it is one
of the many good waves found in
the Playgrounds region. There are
generally two sections to surf, the
top and the inside. The peaks at the
top can be a bit shifty and require
a fair amount of paddling around to
find the right area while the inside
section is more dependable and
offers up a better wall to work with.
A frames is easily one of the most
popular spots in the Mentawai’s and
is sometimes referred to as “John
Candies”.
BANKVAULTS: Bankvaults is a
thick, barreling right punctuated
by a shifting line-up. Sets seem-
ingly emerge out of nowhere and
can wreak havoc if you’re caught
out of position. The ideal size to
surf Bankvaults is head-high to a
triple overhead, in any swell size,
getting caught inside is a certainty.
Despite the dangers, snag a clean,
open barrel here and you’ll be talk-
ing about it for years. If it looks too
heavy, Nipussi is a scant three-
hundred yards to the east.
BENG BENG: Beng Beng is an
extremely rippable left located a few
hundred yards away from E-Bay
and Pitstops. It’s probably one of
the easiest waves to surf in the
Mentawai’s and is fun for surfers of
all ability levels. The area surround-
ing Beng Beng is breathtaking as it
sits nestled inside a small bay with
literally one of the most scenic
views imaginable all around you.
The best size to surf Beng Beng is
anything over shoulder high - even
though it’s relatively short some
people like this wave more than
other waves that are considered

far superior - best of all, it rarely
has a boat on it so most sessions
are by yourself.
BURGERWORLD: Burgerworld
is considered a last alternative when
everywhere else is flat. Anything
bigger than three feet here flattens
out into a giant mushball. The one
positive aspect about Burgerworld
is its consistency; there is always
something rideable here; however,
your chances of scoring this place
on fire is slim.
E-BAY: E-bay is a fast, barreling
left that gets good when it’s head
high or bigger. When a pumping
west swell is marching through,
E-bay does a close impersonation
of Padang Padang on Bali without
the death cliff looming inside. The
overall set-up at E-bay is flawless,
stereotypical Indonesian, with
beautiful, bluish-green water and
tall palm trees everywhere. Besides
its aesthetic beauty, double over-
head E-bay is a beast and force to
be reckon with.
HIDEAWAYS: Hideaways is an
occasionally heavy left near the
Playgrounds region that is fre-
quently visited by Kandui guests.
In the last few years it has been one
of the “go to” waves because it is a
lot more consistent the other world
class waves in our area and can
handle a lot of the more annoying
wind directions like straight souths.
Hideaways has the ability to be a
sick cavern or offer up a rippable
shoulder. You can really only surf it
on medium to high tide, at low tide
it sticks out of the water and unless
you like reef cuts stay away!
ICELAND: Iceland is a sizable left
that is known as one of the “big
wave” spots in the Mentawais. It has
a very large playing field and a few
different take-off options including
a few rights when it is small - but
watch out for the paddle back out!
Iceland isn’t known as a barreling
wave unless it has some serious
size - if big enough it will look more
like Hawaii Five-O than most other
waves in the Mentawais and when it
looks like that Telescopes is a much
better option.
KANDUI: Kandui a.k.a Kanduis
or Nokandui is one of the fastest,
down the line, left-hand barrels in
the world. Kandui is an obscenely

hollow wave with your only option
for survival being tucked inside its
enormous, gaping jaws. Unless
you’re comfortable pumping inside
the barrel the best you can hope for
is to find the right line, exert a little
extra front foot pressure, and hold
on. Most of the waves will simply
outrace you; however, the thrill of
charging through the longest bar-
rel possible is more than worth the
effort. If the conditions are right
you’ll take your share of beatings;
but, chances are you’ll kick out of
the best barrel of your life as well.
KARANGBAT LEFT: Karangbat
Left lies smack dab in the middle
of “Playgrounds.” It breaks best on
a direct south swell and is a fairly
straightforward wave for people
of all abilities. The wave itself runs
almost exactly one hundred yards
over a shallow, but manageable
reef. While sitting in the line-up
you are surrounded by a triangle
of islands which offer a really unique
perspective. Easily visible from
Kandui Resort Karangbat Left is
surfed by those people looking to
take a fish or longboard out and get
some longish rides. Even though it’s
soft a lot of the time with a medium
tide you’ll have a blast!
NIPUSSI: Nipussi is a high-per-
formance right situated inside a
reef-laden cove. Most people line
up at the apex of the point and surf
a solid wall that hugs the inside, but
during a west swell some people
prefer to sit wide and wait for the
swinger sets which break in the
middle of the cove. Nipussi always
has waves and is a good alternative
when the rest of the islands are flat.
It’s known as one of the mellowest
waves in the islands but it’s still a
powerful wave.
PITSTOPS: Pitstops is one of the
most high performance waves in the
Mentawai Islands. Located a few
hundred yards away from E-Bay you
can’t really tell if Pitstops is break-
ing unless you take a close look.
The wave itself starts breaking in
a compact area over reef, remark-
ably, if you’re not paying attention,
the take-off can be quite challeng-
ing. However, once you’re on your
feet you’ve got a really fun, semi-
backwashy wave to carve, pull in, or
boost on. As the wave progresses
it starts breaking over a combina-
tion of sand and reef until eventually

expiring itself on a beautiful tropical
beach. One of the most photogenic
waves in the world.
RIFLES: Rifles is one of the lon-
gest, most perfect, awe-inspiring
waves in the world. When it’s break-
ing properly with a hint of northwest
wind you can expect four to six hun-
dred yard right walls with numerous
tube sections. Rifles is a violent bar-
rel from start to finish, sometimes
when you think you are coming out
another section will throw over,
and another, and another. If you do
come out and see it lining up, you
have to put the pedal to the metal
to make it through the next barrel
section. Basically, you have to go as
fast as you can go almost the whole
way through the wave.
SCARECROWS: Scarecrows
is Telescopes’ big brother, a little
more forceeful, slightly bigger,
and in general a little less refined.
Nevertheless, it definitely has its
good days and because it picks
up a lot of swell is a good option
when the rest of the chain is small.
You’ll probably find the wave to be
very moody and inconsistent, some
days it does a great impression of
Telescopes on the right tide and
direction while other days it is a
warbled mess of high tide rubbish
that is an unmotivating as it gets.
You never can be sure until you’re
looking at it!
TELESCOPES: Every thing
you’ve heard about Telescopes
is true. It’s a remarkably long left
which tempts you to sit deeper
and deeper, almost daring you to
backdoor an impossible section.
With size, the wave breaks for over
a half mile outside and descends
upon the formal take-off area at
mach one. Fortunately, by the time
it reaches the pack its slowed
down a bit and ready to serve up
a wondrous, steep, hollow wall.
Telescopes is frequented by many
boats based on its premiere quality.
However, there always seems to be
plenty of waves to go around and
when its absolutely firing at six to
eight foot many less accomplished
surfers watch it from the safe con-
fines of their boats, videocameras
in hand.

1. DON’T THINK YOU OWN THE PLACE. When you arrive at a
new spot and there is
already a group surfing
the worst thing you can
do is to send out every
surfer on your boat in
an all out assault. It’s
just not cool. A good
surf guide will show you
how to strike a perfect
balance by sending out a
few surfers at a time and
making the transition as
subtle as possible.
2. TAKE YOUR TURN. The majority of waves
in the Mentawai’s break
like a classic point break.
The most discouraging
thing in the world is to
have some clown pad-
dling past you after every
wave. For this rule, think
assembly line, take your
turn, go in order, and
everyone will get their
fair share of waves.
3. HANDS UP IF YOU DON’T WANT IT. When it’s your turn and
you’re waiting for the
set of the day it always
helps to let other people
know your intentions.
Most people will expect
that you’re going to be
going on the next decent
wave that comes through
but by no means does
that mean you have to
go. When a wave is
approaching that you
are not interested in all
you have to do is hold
both of your hands up
and out of the water to
send a clear message to
everyone that you’re not
going. This will eliminate
any ambiguity and there
will definitely be more
waves to go around and
a clear line of communi-
cation in the water.
4. LET IT GO. It sucks to get burned on
a small, weak day so you
can imagine how much
worse it is on a big, scary
day. If you see someone
paddling for a wave,
even if they look like they
aren’t going to catch it,
let it go. Getting stuffed
on a double overhead
grinder with the reef lurk-
ing a few feet below the
surface and the possibil-
ity of getting stuck inside
isnt worth the potential
conflict.
5. PICK ME UP. When you’re ready to get
picked up all you have to
do is wave your board
in the air from the chan-
nel. If there is someone
injured, everyone in the
line-up should wave their
boards at the same time.
SURF ETIQUETTE
Y our trip to the Mentawai’s should be the best experience possible. The very nature of the way in which waves break in the Mentawai’s lends itself to an even higher degree of order and cooperation. Follow these rules and everyone will have a better session, especially you. Remember, you’re on vacation!

Los Angeles Less is more. Pack as light as pos-
sible, we recommend taking one
backpack that you can carry-on to the
flight and your boardbag.
Arrive 2-3 hours before your flight.
Check in at Singapore Air counter
and then take boardbag through secu-
rity- make sure your bags are checked
all the way to Jakarta.
Board flight for first leg, Los Angeles
to Narita, Japan
Tokyo, Japan Once you have landed in Japan you
will be asked to disembark flight and
go through security. You are required
to take all of your belongings with you.
Wait time in Tokyo is usually between
45 minutes to one hour – this is a
good opportunity to charge electronic
devices as they use the same plugs
as the U.S.
Snack bar and internet is available.
Second leg is from Tokyo, Japan to
Singapore. We recommend for this leg
you try to sleep as much as possible to
acclimate to your new time zone.
Singapore You will arrive into Terminal 3 of
Changi Airport around 1:30am.
Terminal 3 is an amazing building but
to make it to your next flight to Jakarta,
Indonesia you will need to head over to
Terminal 2 unless your boarding ticket
says otherwise.
Most people hang out in Terminal 3 –
if you make a reservation in advance you
can rent a transit hotel room (inside the
airport) for the 6 hour layover via Changi
Airport’s website or take a shower in the
Executive Lounge for a fee.
A lot of people sleep in the terminal,
go eat, or get on the internet.
There are plenty of comfortable
places to relax and hang out.
Before you board your next flight, the
third leg of your trip we recommend
exchanging a few hundred dollars into
Indonesian Rupiah which you will need
as you pay airport taxes and buy snacks
traveling in Indonesia.

Jakarta, Indonesia On arrival into Terminal 2 at Soekarno/
Hatta Airport proceed to the VISA area.
Indonesian VISA’s are $25 US for 30
days and divided into two lines. The first
line you pay the fee and the second they
issue the VISA ticket that takes up an
entire page of your passport!
After squaring away your VISA
move swiftly to the immigration coun-
ter, you will be required to fill out an
“Immigration Card” and show it to
the customs agent. They will leave a
“Departure Card” inside your passport,
don’t lose it!
Once you’ve cleared customs go grab
your boards and check in for your next
flight as fast as possible as connection
times are tight!
If you use a porter the standard tip is
20,000 rupiah or about $2 US – if they
complain and want more money just
keep saying “thank you” and act dumb!
If you are on Garuda Airlines for your
flight to Padang you will stay in Terminal
2, all you have to do is go outside and
head upstairs. If you are on Lion Air you
need to head outside and catch the
Shuttle Bus to Terminal 1 about 1 mile
away… It is tricky getting your boards
on there so be prepared! Check in for
your flight and proceed to the gate for
your flight to Padang, the fourth leg of
your trip! Please note: On the way to
your flight you will be required to pay a
40,000rp airport charge.
Padang, Indonesia Our main mode of transportation
from Padang to Kandui Resort revolves
around speedboats and the Mentawai
Fast Ferry service. Our focus is to provide
the easiest and most efficient means to
get you from Padang to Kandui Resort.
Please note that transport out to the
island is on a first come, first served
basis. Kandui Resort currently operates
two transfers per transfer day. Ideally
we need 50% of guests on the 6:00am
transfer requiring guests to arrive the
day before the trip; and 50% on the
3:00pm transfer boat which requires
guests to arrive before 1:00pm on the
first day of the trip. When you make
your reservation we will let you know
what transfer boat we need you to
be on and will make every effort to
accommodate requests to the best of
our ability.
All guests are required to leave Padang
after 6:00pm on the last day of the trip
to be safe and leave room for delays.
No exceptions will be accepted so we
can keep everyone on the same page
and happy.
Guests that arrive on the first trans-
fer boat can check into their umas
at 1:00pm to give us enough time to
clean the umas from the group before.
We would like to encourage all guests
to arrive into Padang the day before
the trip starts and to leave Padang the
morning after the trip ends. This will
allow us to maximize your surf time
and utilize the new Mentawai Fast
Ferry for the safest, most comfortable
transfer out to Kandui Resort.
We also recommend you are able to
access a pair of trunks or bathing suit
for the crossing and keep a pair of clean,
dry clothes in a backpack or within easy
reach as these trips are often wet. Please
brig a water-proof bag if possible. If you
get seasick please prepare accordingly.
Kandui Resort, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

will go over the relevant trip details and
answer any questions you might have.
Our guest relations manager is your
point of contact if you need anything.

bill. Final bills can be paid by cash
or credit card on the island and cov-
ers extra items such as photography,
videos, extra t-shirts, souvenirs, mas-
sages, alcoholic drinks, and tips.
Kandui Resort On the last day of your trip you will be
leaving in the morning for the ride back
to Padang via speedboat or Mentawai
Fast Ferry
It is a good idea to pack a sturdy, plas-
tic bag if you have loose items in the
boardbag and to wrap your bags in for
the boat crossing from Kandui Resort
to Padang.
We need all guests ready to
depart between 10:30am and
11:00am on the last day of the trip
depending on weather conditions.
Padang, Indonesia Once you get back to Padang via
charter flight you will be be taken to
your next flight’s check in desk.
After that please check in and wait
for your flight back to Jakarta. Please be
patient as wait times average about 3
hours but we need that time to give us
a buffer zone in case of transportation
issues getting you back from Kandui.
Most people will be staying overnight
at the Sheraton Bandara. Please make
sure you have a confirmed reservation
and ask Our manager to call ahead and
make sure the Sheraton sends their
shuttle bus to fit your boards!
Please note: You will be required to
pay a 40,000rp airport charge prior to
getting on your flight.
Jakarta, Indonesia Once you arrive a representative
from the Sheraton will greet you in the
Baggage Claim area.
Once you arrive at the hotel they will
store the boards in a special area.
Check -in for the hotel but please
remember to get a wake up call because
your flight the next morning is very early!
You need to be ready to go at 5:00am to
be safe – DO NOT MISS YOUR FLIGHT as
it will set off a chain of events that could
see you in Asia for longer than you want!
As you check in make sure your
boards are checked in all the way back
to Los Angeles and that you get your
boarding passes all the way back to Los
Angeles in Jakarta as well!
Please note: You will be required to
pay a 150,000rp airport charge to leave
the country, Indonesia’s way of saying
good bye!
Singapore Once you arrive into Singapore time
is limited so hustle to your connecting
flight to Tokyo!
Tokyo, Japan Reverse the incoming process
Los Angeles For this final leg we suggest you try
to sleep… you will arrive back into Los
Angeles around noon so if you sleep
you can diminish the effects of jet lag.
Once you arrive, proceed through
immigration, collect your bags, and go
through security.
