From the Pastor’s Desk �

Praised be Jesus Christ! “If you was hit by a truck and you was lying out there in that gutter dying, and you had time to sing “one”

song. One song that people would remember before you're dirt. One song that would let God know how you felt about your time here on

Earth. One song that would sum you up. You tellin' me that's the song you'd sing? That same Jimmy Davis tune we hear on the radio all

day, about your peace within, and how it's real, and how you're gonna shout it? Or... would you sing somethin' different. Somethin' real.

Somethin' “you” felt. Cause I'm telling you right now, that's the kind of song people want to hear. That's the kind of song that truly saves

people. It ain't got nothin to do with believin' in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believin' in yourself.” It was Sam Phillips who spoke

these words to Johnny Cash just before his long and illustrious career began. While we disagree with his claim that believing in God is

overrated, Mr. Phillips’ words do underline the fact that many people look to music to console them and make sense of the troubles and

trials of this world. And frankly, it is surprising how often music lyrics do reveal something about God and His mysterious plan for our

world. For example, a couple of weeks ago I heard a song on the radio titled “Save Yourself” by Stabbing Westward (it was the edited

version, which I didn’t know until looking up the lyrics). And, wittingly or unwittingly, they got it right: the song concludes that we can

neither save ourselves or others. Another band, Flyleaf, was on the same station with their song, “All Around Me.” The song is clearly

about love, and one could easily apply the words of the refrain to God’s Real Presence in the Eucharist: �

I can feel you all around me�

Thickening the air I'm breathing�

Holding on to what I'm feeling�

Savoring this heart that's healing�

�

Saint Thomas Aquinas marveled at how generously God reveals Himself to all of His children, whether explicitly Christian or not. As

we come to the end of the liturgical year, we hear readings that are disturbing, what with their prediction of war and bloodshed as por-

tending the end of the world. But even in the saddest circumstances, God is working to offer us a better way forward. Violence and

betrayal and the bitterness that accompany them are as old as Cain and Abel. At times we feel powerless to do anything about the dis-

cord that seems to characterize our times. But God never gives up on us or on our world. Rather, He invites us to look within our own

hearts, as it’s there that His healing must begin. Yes, God reveals His will for us in the midst of terrible times because for many of us,

until we bottom out, we seem disinclined to listen to Him. But we are given a choice, as the following passage illustrates (it’s a speech

given by a priest to a young man heading off to war for the first time):�

�

“There is always a better way than war. Everyone knows this but almost everyone forgets that it is so. Down the generations, therefore,

down the centuries, boys like you are sent to fight. It is tragic. But then, life is tragic. The pride and the fall. In war it will sometimes

seem that it is their pride, whoever they are, in government, in command, and your fall. But no. It is always more complicated. In every

soul there is pride and there is falling. In every soul there is also the possibility of truthfulness and kindness as well as of courage, and

for every soul there is always the mercy of God. Look about you . . . . when you are there, and see, really see, what you are looking at.

Then you will be safe with God, whatever harm may come to you, which we will pray for you to escape,” (The Year of Thamar’s Book,

Lucy Beckett, pg. 267).�

How Can We Help?�

Have you watched the medical drama “New

Amsterdam” based on the fictitious hospital by the

same name? The overriding theme in each episode is

the medical director, who views each hospital chal-

lenge by asking his staff and patients “How can I help?” The

good doctor often arrives at solutions that are unconventional but

address the heart of the problem. St. Vincent de Paul home

visitors use much the same approach in serving our neighbors in

need. “Vincentians” discern how best to offer support, which can

take the form of financial help, a bed for a family who is sleeping

on the floor, a gas card to assure transportation to a new job.

Other times, “help” means listening, referring to community

resources or offering simple kindness and comfort.

participate in our Thanksgiving Mass food drive.

There will be no collection that day, so if you wish to make a

monetary donation instead, you are invited to bring it up at the

same time and put it in the baskets that will be there for that

The Advent Wreath�

When you have a simple Advent Wreath on your family dinner

table and light a candle for each week of Advent, you pray
