Elvis next appeared on “The Steve Allen Show,” with Allen mocking the sensation of the Berle appearance by having Elvis dress in a tuxedo, eliminate his usual physical gyrations, and sing “Hound Dog” to a Basset Hound. Ed Sullivan had once said he would never have the controversial singer on his top- rated show, but that was before Elvis’ appearance on “Steve Allen” surpassed Sullivan’s ratings. When it was all said and done, Sullivan paid Elvis $50,000 to make three appearances on his show. At the time, it was more money than any performer had ever been paid to appear on a network variety program. With these great achievements, there is no doubt why many people continue to say there will never be anyone like Elvis Presley. For many, 1956 will signify the beginning of not just great music, but also great entertainment. 2011 is a significant milestone year for Elvis Presley fans. Fifty-five years ago, at the age of 21, Elvis’ career took off in what would be a whirlwind year for the young entertainer who had only begun breaking new ground with his unique performance and vocal style.

Coined “The Year of Firsts” by both casual music listeners and Elvis fans alike, 1956 was when Elvis enjoyed his first RCA single and national hit, first album, first movie and first television appear-ances on multiple television shows.

Elvis’ first RCA single and national hit was none other than “Heartbreak Hotel,” which he recorded only two days after his 21st birthday. This was his first recording session for RCA and was held at their studio in Nashville, Tenn. Soon after the completion and shipping of his record, 300,000 copies were sold and it went to the top of the Billboard’s pop single chart for eight weeks. It also placed at the top of the country chart and rounded out the top five on the R&B chart. Later it became the first Elvis single to sell over one million copies, thus earning Elvis his very first gold record award.

A few months later, the country would soon get their hands on a much anticipated album release from the growing musical star, self-titled “Elvis Presley.” That album,

much like his first RCA single, found its way to the top of Billboard’s charts. Soon after being released, it reached number one on the pop album chart where it remained for 10 weeks. It was the first Elvis album to reach over one million in sales, thus earning Elvis his first gold album award.

Still on the heels of his musical success, Elvis soon found himself starring in his first feature film, “Love Me Tender.” Originally titled “The Reno Brothers,” the movie was re-titled before its release and named after a single from the soundtrack. Premiering at the Paramount Theater in New York City and opening nationwide soon after, it became a huge success and opened

the doors for Elvis to become the leading actor in future films.

When it came to television, Elvis made his network television debut

with the first of six appearances on “Stage Show,” a weekly variety program hosted by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. He followed these with two appearances on “The

Milton Berle Show,” the second of which included a performance of “Hound Dog” that was so provocative that it caused a national scandal. Elvis next appeared on “The Steve Allen Show,” with Allen mocking the sensation of the Berle appearance by having Elvis dress in a tuxedo, eliminate his usual physical gyrations, and sing “Hound Dog” to a Basset Hound. Ed Sullivan had once said he would never have the controversial singer on his top-rated show, but that was before Elvis’ appearance on “Steve Allen” surpassed Sullivan’s ratings.

While many things have not been able to stand the test of time, Elvis continues to be loved, cherished and discovered by generations of fans who weren’t even alive in 1956 when Elvis was just breaking ground on his way to becoming the most celebrated entertainer in the world.

Dear Elvis Fans,Welcome to Memphis and Elvis Week 2011. We have

exciting events planned as well as several new exhibits this year. We appreciate you joining us as we pay tribute to the life and legacy of the king.

While all events at Elvis Week are special, one that should not be missed is Elvis Presley LIVE – The King in Concert on Saturday, August 13, at the Orpheum. Presented exactly like one of his classic live performances at the Las

Vegas Hilton showroom, this multi-media music event is a rare opportunity to experience an Elvis concert in the city he called home. Singing lead vocals, Elvis is projected larger than life on state-of-the-art screens. It is truly a night with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll that you’ll want to experience in Memphis with your friends, family and fans from around the world.

In addition, at Graceland you will be able to experience many new exhibits such as The Roots of Elvis, Elvis! His Groundbreaking, Hip-Shaking, Newsmaking Story and a 1956 Timeline.

All this, combined with live music, concerts, and especially the Candlelight Vigil, assures you’ll have a wonderful week as we celebrate Elvis.

Jack SodenCEOElvis Presley Enterprises

Dear Friends,On behalf of the people of our great city and Elvis fans

everywhere, welcome to Memphis! For over fifty years, we have held the distinction of being the legendary birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, the home of the blues, and the cradle of soul. Every road of American music leads directly to Memphis - and in particular, to the front door of Elvis Presley’s Graceland residence.

Elvis remains a peerless global figure, a legend of style and talent whose star remains undiminished to this day. Memphis

is honored to have been Elvis’ hometown and the place where his unforgettable career began. With every passing year, his importance as an artist and icon only grows. We’re so grateful that you’ve joined us for the annual celebration of his music, his life, and his legacy. Memphis prides itself on being one of the friendliest and most welcoming cities in the country, and I hope you find time to explore everything our great community has to offer.

During his time in the military, a reporter asked Elvis what he missed most about Memphis. His answer: “Everything.” Whether this is your first time in Memphis or your fiftieth, I think after Elvis Week 2011, you’ll agree.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

AC Wharton, Jr.Mayor, City of Memphis

Dear Elvis Fans,We are fortunate to have the legacy of Elvis Presley in

Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis Presley Enterprises has done a remarkable job in keeping the attention of the memory of Elvis Presley around the world.

This is a momentous occasion, and I would like to personally welcome our friends and visitors to Shelby County. Our residents and business owners always enjoy hosting the out-of-town guests of this event.

Our community continues to benefit from the progress and growth of Elvis Presley Enterprises as it promotes our history, culture, and iconic artists.

As Mayor of Shelby County, I extend my sincere gratitude and warm welcome to the “Elvis” fans, along with their families and friends, who chose Elvis Week 2011 to visit Memphis, Tennessee.

Sincerely,

Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.Mayor, Shelby County

Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. has unveiled the artwork that will be used throughout 2012 on merchandise, advertising and in conjunction with events to commemorate the 35th annual celebration of the legacy of Elvis Presley.

In recent years, the 20th, 25th and 30th year anniversaries saw a dramatic increase in awareness and participation by the media, licensees and fans from all over the world. In 2012, there will be even more ways than ever for fans, many of whom were not yet born when Elvis passed away, to celebrate their love for the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The artwork for the branding program, which was developed by Memphis firm Red Deluxe, features a variety of Elvis silhouettes in bright, contemporary colors along with the type, “ELVIS PR35LEY.” With multiple versions of the artwork, licensees, sponsors and other EPE partners will have the flexibility needed to include the branding on packaging, advertising, and merchandise.

“Elvis has always been an influence on design through his unique sense of fashion, personality and charisma,” said Carol Butler, Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for EPE. “Many of our licensees have shared with me that

the bold colors and contemporary look and feel of this design illustrate for them how Elvis is still so relevant today.”

The 35th Anniversary Year of Elvis will kick off in Memphis,

Tenn., during his birthday celebration held Thursday, January 5 through Sunday, January 8, 2012, followed by The Elvis Cruise from Jacksonville, Fla., to Nassau, Bahamas, on January 12 – 16, 2012.

In August 2012, hundreds of

thousands of fans from around the world will gather in Memphis for a week of parties, concerts, panel discussions and more during Elvis Week. One of the largest events during the week, and one that has

become a rock ‘n’ roll pilgrimage for many, is the annual Candlelight Vigil on August 15. Visit page 7 of the Event Guide for more about Elvis Week 2012.

“International fan clubs that normally bring 50 or 100 fans to Memphis for Elvis Week have told us they are bringing 500 or more in 2012,” said Scott Williams, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations for EPE. “And thanks to the growth of social networking, fans will be able to join us online making this the biggest celebration of Elvis in history.”

Product launches for 2012 include an unannounced special music release from Sony, a special movie assortment from Warner Bros, and product from licensees including Bradford, Mattel, Mead, Zippo, IGT and many others.

Licensed merchandise featuring the 2012 artwork will begin to appear at retail outlets around Thanksgiving 2011 with a limited number of items available during Elvis Week 2011 at Graceland.

With hundreds of sold out performances, very few locations have garnered the love that Elvis had for Las Vegas. Today, that very city is where both Elvis fans and entertainment lovers alike can find one of the biggest tributes to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll that is unlike anything you can see anywhere in the world.

Through a harmonious fusion of dance, acrobatics and live music, Viva ELVIS is a tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley. High energy and raw emotion provide the backdrop for his iconic voice and the exhilaration of his music, brought to life every night by the international and multi-talented cast.

Comprised of dancers, musicians, singers, acrobats, lasso artists and an actor; 75 artists set out to present the songs of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in a contemporary form that evokes the spirit of Elvis in every way possible. During each show, they seamlessly channel an exhilarating and youthful tribute to Elvis’ life through imaginative and inspired costumes, unique dance numbers, thrilling acrobatics, one of a kind sets and heart-pumping live music.

“What would the songs of Elvis be like if he were doing them for the first time today?” asks Musical Director and

Arranger Erich Van Tourneau. “With all humility, I set out to evoke the soul and the spirit of Elvis Presley, while building a bridge between his music and future generations of fans.”

The styles of Viva ELVIS move from Delta blues to rockabilly, soul to gospel, through Dixie and Southern folk music. Some of the

songs even evoke garage rock and punk, steeped in waves of hip-hop and urban music. But one thing is certain and remains consistent: the sound of Viva ELVIS is pure rock.

Thirty of Elvis’ songs are used in the production, with remixes designed to accentuate and boost the emotional charge of his performances.

Elvis’ voice is the only male singing voice in Viva ELVIS, joined by female singers and an energetic live band that has guests dancing in their seats. For the first time in over 30 years, Elvis fans and music-lovers alike are able to hear his voice in its true and fantastic form – live and on stage in Las Vegas

– exclusively at ARIATM Resort & Casino.

After a year of spectacular shows, Viva ELVIS is still going strong with performances that have many guests saying that it is the best they have seen. For those who have not had the opportunity to see the show, it in itself is enough to warrant a trip to Las Vegas.

Inspired by the true story, Million Dollar Quartet, the smash-hitmusical,issetonDecember4,1956,whenanauspicioustwistoffate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock and Roll,” who discovered them all. The four young musicians united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

Featuring a treasure trove of the greatest rock and roll, gospel, R&B and country hits from these musicians, including such iconic songs as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,”

“Riders in the Sky,” “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” Million Dollar Quartet captures the infectious spirit, freewheeling excitement and thrilling sounds of a singular moment when four of the music industry’s most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history.

The Chicago production of Million Dollar Quartet opened in 2008andisstillplayingtopackedhouses at the Apollo Theatre. After a successful Broadway run at

the Nederlander theatre and receiving a Tony nomination for Best Musical, the New York production will be transferring off-Broadway to New World Stages later this summer. A West End production opened winter2011toravereviews and is currently playing at the Noël Coward

Theatre in London. An upcoming national tour will launch this October in Cleveland.

Million Dollar Quartet won a Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Award and received Tony nominations for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical (Colin

Escott & Floyd Mutrux), a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue and three Drama League nominations including Distinguished Production of a Musical and Distinguished Performance (Lance Guest).

Million Dollar Quartet is directed by Eric Schaeffer and features a book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. The recorded legacy of Elvis Presley continues to be discovered by new generations that never saw him live. It’s fair to say that he started much of what we take for granted now in popular music.Until1956,the teenagers of suburban America and the rest of the world had to endure ditties by Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como, but everything was about to be tossed upside down. On January28,ona cold night in New York, Elvis took America by storm as he appeared on CBS-TV’s “Stage Show” hosted by Jimmy and TommyDorsey.OnFebruary11,for his third appearance, he sang

a song that literally changed the world of popular music, “Heartbreak Hotel.” Its unique sound and style

literally blew everything before it away, while at the same time introducing the blueprint for everything that was to come. By April, it would be number one on Billboard. This seminal music step-change resonated around the world, and while liberating millions of teenagers it also inspired many successful artists of today to pick up

a guitar or sing. Everyone wanted to be like Elvis. The pure spontaneity of these recordings is apparent even today. “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Don’t

Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog,” “Blue Suede Shoes” and “My Baby Left Me” are some of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll records ever made. Elvis’ unprecedented level of achievement is still the benchmark by which artistic success is measured today and“YOUNGMANWITHTHEBIG BEAT” is a testament to the phenomenon and cultural icon that is Elvis Presley.

“My mother was watching The Ed Sullivan Show and Elvis came on. I went out and bought a guitar straight away...” Bruce Springsteen“Without Elvis none of us could have made it.” Buddy Holly“He had so much energy we had to sit up nights to wear him out so that we could go to sleep.” Scotty Moore“My crushing ambition in life was to be like Elvis Presley.” John Lennon“Elvis taught white America to get down.” James Brown

“... my pelvis had nothin’ to do with what I do. I

just get kinda in rhythm with the music, I jump

around to it because I enjoy what I’m doin’, I’m

not tryin’ to be vulgar, I’m not tryin’ to sell any

sex, I’m not tryin’ to look vulgar and nasty.

I just enjoy what I’m doin’ and tryin’

to make the best of it ...” Elvis Presley, 1956

Q. What about parking? Around 6:00 p.m. on the evening of August 15, the Memphis Police will begin the process of closing traffic on Elvis Presley Boulevard from Bluebird Street to Craft Road. It should be completely closed to through traffic by 6:30 p.m. Security-patrolled parking for the vigil will be available FREE of charge beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the regular Graceland visitor parking facility. Vehicles will be allowed to pass through the police barricades to come and go from the parking area all evening.

Q. When does the Candlelight Vigil begin? How does it work? The opening ceremony takes place at 8:30 p.m. on August 15, near the front gates of the mansion property. Fans gather in the street and in Graceland Plaza to see this. There is a queue line in the street. At the end of the ceremony, torches lit from the eternal flame at Elvis’ grave are brought down to the gate. The queue line starts to move as fans walk through gates and light their candles on the torches and then walk single file up the driveway to the gravesite in the Meditation Garden and back down. To accommodate everyone who is in line, the procession lasts into the morning of August 16, the anniversary of Elvis’ passing. Graceland staff members are positioned all along the way to offer assistance. Near the front gate, Elvis fan club leaders from all over the world work in shifts to offer further assistance. Although candle lighting for the procession is from the torches, please do be prepared to light your candle when asked to do so for our traditional “sea of candles” shot for the world news media at the start of the opening ceremony.

Q. Any tips for my physical comfort? It is August in Memphis. That usually means heat and humidity. Please take precautions. Any health problems are sure to be aggravated by the climate, the crowding of people, and the long periods of standing. Many fans have learned to avoid the discomfort of being in a tight crowd for so long by first gathering with everyone on the street for the opening ceremony, then moving back to a comfortable spot in the plaza, enjoying a gorgeous view of the procession from there, then joining the queue line some time later after the crowd has thinned out. Restrooms are not available on the mansion grounds during the vigil. Restrooms are available in the ticket pavilion, the restaurants, and other Graceland Plaza buildings.

Q. What if I forgot to bring a candle? Graceland provides free candles to those who arrive at the vigil without their own. These may be obtained at the guest services desk in the ticket pavilion during the afternoon or early evening of August 15 or at the barricaded area at the front gate anytime during the vigil.

Q. Any special rules or guidelines? Consideration - Please be considerate of others and do not hold up the movement or flow of the procession by lingering at the grave site, stepping out of line to remain in the garden, bunching up into groups, etc. The idea is to have a continuous single-file flow. Remember that however long you might have waited, there are many more behind you who have waited longer. Please keep moving.Lingering - If you would like to spend more time in the Meditation Garden during Elvis Week, please see the event listings for the schedule of free walk-up visit availability in the mornings and several evenings of Elvis Week. You may linger in the Meditation Garden at those times or when you are on the regular Graceland tour.Security - As a security precaution, no bags (including camera bags, backpacks, shopping bags, briefcases or luggage items) will be allowed on the mansion property. Any bags or packages that you have should be returned to your car or your lodging before entering the queue line for the vigil. No one will be allowed through the mansion gates with any of these items. Any other items carried onto the property are subject to search. Cameras/AV - Still cameras with or without flash may be used on the mansion grounds; however, camera tripods, video equipment, movie cameras, tape recorders, music-playing devices and radios are strictly prohibited. No Food or Drinks - Food items, drink cans, and glass containers are prohibited on the mansion grounds. The Graceland/EPE staff provides water at stations at the front gate and mid-way up the mansion driveway.Smoking - Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the Graceland Mansion property. In the interest of the health and comfort of others, smokers on the street and on the plaza property are encouraged to find open, non-crowded areas to smoke.

Behavior – Boisterous or otherwise disruptive behavior and loud noise are prohibited on the mansion grounds. Those who insist upon violating the rules or behaving inappropriately will be escorted from the mansion or plaza property. Graceland Security and the Memphis Police will deal with those issues if any arise.Q. What if I brought flowers or a memorial? You are welcome to bring single flowers, small bouquets or other small remembrances to place at the grave site as you walk by in the procession or when you tour Graceland or when you enjoy the free walk-up visiting times. Larger floral arrangements or memorial displays may be taken to the front gate

guard house any time and Graceland staff will take care of placement. Q. What if I need medical help? First aid will be available along the procession and queue line as needed by contacting any Graceland/EPE staff member or a police officer for assistance. Outside the mansion grounds there will be two special first aid locations. One will be in the specially marked area in front of the mansion gates. The other will be located directly across the street from the gate. An EMT will be available to assist with special needs and emergencies. Graceland employees and the Memphis Police will be available throughout the area.Q. What about access for persons with disabilities? Graceland has wheelchairs available for emergency use only. Those who have their own wheelchairs or need information about access arrangements for persons with disabilities may inquire at the Guest Services desk inside the ticket office pavilion in the plaza. Q. What’s up with all these reporters? The Candlelight Vigil, particularly when on a major anniversary, attracts extensive media attention from around the world each year. Television crews, photographers and journalists will be allowed access to the vigil on a restricted basis. Most of their activity usually takes place during the first couple of hours. Media are asked to take care of their business in a quiet, respectful, expedient fashion. The media will be allowed to videotape and photograph in a specific area at the edge of the garden and they will be allowed to invite people to step away from the line on the driveway for interviews. They may also interview people on the street or in the plaza. If you find any media representative behaving improperly, please notify the nearest Graceland employee, who will either correct the problem or summon a manager to do so. Please be mindful that the media have their job to do and their coverage of this and other Elvis Week activities is important to the perpetuation of the Elvis legacy. Also, for each one of you who gets to be here for Elvis Week, there are thousands more who wish they could be here to participate. Access to media coverage is their way of sharing the week with you.ElvisWeek.com Live VigilCast EPE will provide a live feed of the first hour of the Candlelight Vigil on ElvisWeek.com for those around the world who are unable to be in Memphis.Elvis Radio/Sirius XM Elvis Radio will have special live coverage of the Candlelight Vigil, including pre-taped interviews with friends and colleagues of Elvis and live interviews with fans and special guests.

2011 Candlelight Vigil August 15-16, 2011

Within hours of the announcement of Elvis Presley’s death on August 16, 1977, at age 42, thousands of fans crowded the gate area in front of Graceland Mansion in an expression of grief, shock, disbelief and love. Thousands upon thousands of people all over the world felt as though they had suddenly lost a close friend or member of the family. Such was the relationship Elvis had with his audience.

On the first anniversary of Elvis’ passing a number of fans gathered outside the gates with candles and spent an evening talking and reminiscing. The next year there were more. The Austin-based Elvis Country Fan Club organized an opening ceremony. Each year, more and more fans came to Memphis that week for the candlelight tribute and various other activities started getting organized. When Graceland opened for public tours in the summer of 1982, fans suggested to the management that the gates be open during their candlelight tribute, allowing them to walk single-file up the driveway to Elvis’ gravesite and back down. The management agreed.

Responding further to the growing influx of fans in August, Graceland/Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE) took the lead in organizing Elvis Week, which has grown in its diversity of events. The solemn and beautiful Candlelight Vigil continues to be the climactic event of Elvis Week, which otherwise is a high-energy mix of music, dance, sports, social and charitable events presented by Graceland/EPE, Elvis fan clubs and many other participating organizations. It all happens in an atmosphere of international, multi-generational, multi-cultural friendship and camaraderie. Elvis Week as a whole and the Candlelight Vigil in particular have become a cultural phenomenon known all over the world.

There are many fun events and special Elvis happenings throughout the year at Graceland and around the world that make it into our photo spotlight section. Here are some of our favorites:

November 19, 2010Graceland’s special guest for its annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony was none other than “American Idol” Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze. Later that evening before performing, he helped “flip the switch” to turn on the Christmas lights throughout the grounds of Graceland.

February 6, 2011Held on the north front lawn of the mansion on February 6, 2011, Graceland was the place to be while watching Super Bowl XLV. The watch party that day included an auction benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and a touch football game reminiscent of the games Elvis held at Graceland more than 40 years ago.

March 26, 2011Hundreds of Boy and Girl Scouts from across the nation visited Graceland for Scout Day. Scouts took a tour of the mansion and participated in activities like arts and crafts, Elvis karaoke and learning how to be an Elvis DJ.

May 20, 2011Alternative rockers the Foo Fighters visited Elvis Presley’s Graceland! The band was in Memphis to headline a show at the FedExForum.

May 14, 2011The cast of Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” and “Victorious” take a tour of Graceland during a trip to Memphis. Later that evening, cast members participated in a fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

June 2, 2011Elvis’ red MG from the movie “Blue Hawaii” arrived in Little Rock. The car is part of one of two new temporary exhibits at the Clinton Presidential Center. “Elvis” and “Elvis at 21, Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer” are still showing through August 21 and September 11 respectively, and are accompanied by exhibit-related events, activities and program-ming throughout the summer.

September 23, 2010Pop star Katy Perry and her husband, British actor/comedian Russell Brand, visit Graceland. Soon after their visit, they tweeted a picture of them sitting on the front steps with a caption saying, “We’ve relocated.”

Photographer Alfred Wertheimer captured some of the most iconic photographs of Elvis Presley during his meteoric rise to fame in 1956. Alfred had been working as a freelance photographer when he got the fateful call to take publicity photos of the young up-and-coming singer, who would eventually go on to become the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. We recently had the chance to chat with him about his experience working with Elvis.Q) How did you get the job photographing Elvis Presley? A) I got a call from Ann Fulchino with RCA Victor in March of 1956. She asked me if I was available for a shoot on March 17 at Studio 50, which was one of the CBS studios. I said, “I was available and asked what she wanted me to photograph. Ann said it was for

the “Dorsey Brothers Stage Show.” I said, “That’s great. Tommy Dorsey is one of my heroes.” That’s when Ann told me she didn’t necessarily want me to photograph Tommy Dorsey. She said “I want you to photograph Elvis Presley.” I said, “Elvis who?” I had never heard of him!Q) Tell us about your first meeting with Elvis. A) It was at the rehearsal for the “Dorsey Brothers Stage Show.” I was brought to Elvis’ dressing room and there were two people sitting inside. One was a young man and one was a middle-aged man. The middle-aged man was showing the younger man a line of jewelry and the younger man kept looking at his right hand. Ann said to the younger man, “Elvis, this is Al Wertheimer. He’ll be taking some

pictures of you. I hope you don’t mind.” Elvis just kept looking at his hand and says, “Yeah, that’s ok. Why not?” Of course at that point Elvis didn’t have a gold record, so he was just a well-known regional singer. I soon realized what he was looking at was his brand new gold horseshoe ring. Since he wasn’t very talkative with me and was focused on his ring, I decided to take out my two cameras and become like the fly on the wall. I started taking photographs.Q) Tell us about that rehearsal. A) Elvis’ job on that show was to perform for six minutes or two songs. Elvis took the stage with his trio - Bill Black and Scotty Moore. They went through the songs and I could see that Elvis was really holding back. When he was rehearsing, Elvis was one kind

of temperament, and when he was on stage during the actual take, he was very different. During the rehearsal, he was getting some advice from the back of the theater, from two William Morris agents. There’s this one picture I love very much where each one of the agents is on one side of Elvis and he’s getting advice from both. And he’s taking this advice. It’s astounding that he would even allow some of them to put their hands on him. The basic advice that was being given at that time was ‘Don’t wiggle around so much. Be very careful about what you do below your waist.’Q) How many times did you work with Elvis and how many photos did you take of him? A) I have approximately 2,500 images of Elvis and that’s from a period of two groups of shootings. Several were taken throughout 1956 and then I met up with him again on September 22, 1958, on the day he left at the Brooklyn Port of Embarkation for Germany as a soldier in the U.S. Army. All in all, I

This year’s Official Elvis Insiders Event during Elvis Week 2011 will take place aboard the Memphis Queen III Riverboat, a ship with a lot of history. We recently spoke with Captain Dale Lozier about the Memphis Queen’s past.

“My dad built this boat in what is now in my backyard on West Shelby Drive in Memphis. The construction was completed on August 17, 1977, one day

after the death of Elvis Presley. Transporting the Memphis Queen was very difficult. South Third Street was only four lanes wide back then, and the ship’s hull took up the two center lanes. There was also a lot of traffic on the road because of those mourning Elvis’ passing. The boat traveled east on Shelby Drive to Third Street, brushing against overhanging trees and blocking all traffic. We finally got her down

to President’s Island to await the expected high water to float her. When the high water did not reach high enough, we had three small tug boats with fire hoses saturate the ground below the boat. Each one also had a line attached to the Memphis Queen. They all went full speed and jerked the hull into the water. It was an adventure!”

The Official Elvis Insiders Event is on Saturday, August

13 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Insiders will go rollin’ on the Mississippi River aboard the Memphis Queen III, enjoying light hors d’oeuvres, dancing, Elvis music, and a beautiful view of the Memphis skyline. This event is sold out, but see the ad below for details on how you can schedule your next riverboat adventure.

Officials at the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo, Miss., were thrilled to break ground in May on phase one of an expansion slated for completion in spring 2012. The construction will add 10,000 square feet of space to the popular attraction visited by fans worldwide and will include a 135-seat theater with 22’ wide screen, large hall and catering kitchen for wedding receptions and other public events, a gallery for displaying unique Elvis artifacts, a snack area, offices, archival storage, and new restrooms.

“This space is going to give us the ability to have nighttime activities, live performances and educational opportunities,” stated Dick Guyton, executive director of the Elvis Presley Birthplace. “It is going to allow us to do a lot of the programming that the fans request from us.”

Following Elvis’ Tupelo concerts of 1956 and 1957, Elvis donated the concert proceeds to purchase the birthplace and 15 acres of land for a park on which was built a teen center and swimming pool for the enjoyment of the kids in East Tupelo.

After Elvis’ death in 1977, heartbroken fans around the world donated to the newly formed Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation, whose funds were used to build a contemporary chapel on the Birthplace grounds. The Chapel was dedicated to the fans worldwide in 1979.

Through the untiring efforts of Elvis’ friend and Tupelo native Janelle McComb, the birthplace and park developed into Mississippi’s most visited landmark and created a legacy that would always represent her life-long love for her friend Elvis.

During a decade of change spanning from 2000-2010, several venues were added that really brought the birthplace to life - the museum was totally remodeled and expanded to a Smithsonian – quality facility and a statue of “Elvis-at-13” was commissioned to commemorate “Elvis – The Boy” which became the center piece of the grounds.

Other additions were planned and executed to further interpret Elvis’ early years in Tupelo. Careful attention was paid to exhibits so that the essence of the birthplace remained intact and that Elvis “the boy” remained the focus of the attraction. Some of these include the Walk of Life surrounding the Birthplace home, a Story Wall including boyhood stories told by Elvis’ friends and family, and a Fountain of Life that symbolizes the life journey of Elvis.

In 2009, the original one-room frame building that was the Assembly of God Church of East Tupelo, Elvis’ boyhood church, was discovered and moved to the Birthplace grounds, restored to its original state and opened to the public. Guests who visit the simple church are transported by a multi-media presentation into a 1940’s Pentecostal Sunday night church service with Elvis and his family where they experience how Elvis’ love for gospel music began.

Phase two of the expansion is in the capital fundraising stage and will further enhance a guest’s experience by providing an amphitheater, a walking trail and a life-size statue at a revived RCA Overlook.

For more information on Tupelo and the Elvis Presley Birthplace, visit www.tupelo.net or call 800-533-0611 for a free visitors guide.

had eight shooting days with Elvis. A lot of people feel that I captured more of the essence of Elvis than anyone else. The only thing I wanted Elvis to do was to be himself. Everyone else had something they wanted him to do.Q) Were you surprised at the way people, especially young women, reacted to Elvis? A) I didn’t understand it, but I took the attitude that even if you don’t understand, keep shooting.Q) What was your relationship with Elvis like? A) I used him and he used me in a symbiotic way. You see, he was almost at the point where he was being recognized as a national star, but not quite. I’ll give you an example. Once, in a railroad station in Chattanooga, Tennessee, we were waiting to change trains. Elvis went over to a magazine rack and picked up a movie magazine.

He found a photo of himself inside and says to me “Al, can I have a pen?” I gave him one and he scribbled his name inside the magazine. Then he goes over to the two girls working at the magazine rack. He had the spread open to his picture, showing it to them. He’s also looking back at me with a huge Cheshire Cat grin. Their reaction was “That’ll be 35 cents sir.” (laughing) Elvis said to them “No, this is for you. I’m Elvis Presley.” Finally the girls agree that it is. In the meantime, I’m capturing pictures of all of this, which is really what Elvis wanted. He knew one day that he would be very famous, and he wanted to capture on film these kinds of momentsAl will be appearing at Conversations on Elvis during Elvis Week on August 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Orpheum, as well as will be a guest on the 2012 Elvis Cruise.

“Kyle and I got married on July 24, 2010, at Graceland’s Chapel in the Woods. We both wanted a very special venue for our big day and a day that our family would never forget. Without a doubt, Graceland was the first choice. Having never been to Graceland but always wanting to go, we felt this would be a great way to get the family together and have the marriage ceremony. After discovering Graceland’s Chapel in the Woods, we knew we had found our dream location for our wedding. I contacted the wedding coordinators and from the very first phone call everything was taken care of. Graceland’s Chapel in the Woods exceeded our expectations. The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive. They made sure our day was just that, “ours.” The southern hospitality and charm made us feel very welcome. It certainly left a lasting impression. In the future, we would like to go back and renew our vows and also stop by to say hello to the staff who we will never forget. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.” – Jennifer Ballard

“We wanted a special place for our 50th Anniversary Celebration. We considered several options but kept coming back to Graceland’s Chapel in the Woods as our place of choice. We are very happy we made this choice. We could not have had a renewal of our vows go any smoother or nicer than our experience at Graceland. Our special events coordinator did a wonderful job for us and we appreciate her so very much for all she did. The official and photographer were great and the cake and flowers were the best! The facility is so very nice and quaint. We could go on and on but you can see this was the right choice for us.” - Judy Blake.

Adele and Michael Hay Married April 30, 2011

“Since I was able to hear music, I have been an Elvis Presley admirer. This admiration grew into obsession as I became more aware of his character. Elvis had the natural power to attract people with his talent, kindheartedness and sex appeal. His effect on history has astonished me to this day and I never even experienced him in person because he died before I was born. Because of my love and respect for Elvis Presley, it was not only a lifetime dream to marry one day, but also to be married at the Chapel in the Woods at Graceland. Aside from the inspiration behind the Chapel, our wedding was remarkable, elegant, prearranged and very reasonably priced. I live roughly six hours away and only had to worry about bringing the dress. I would do it again and I would recommend it to any couple, even someone who’s not an Elvis Presley fan.” -Adele Hay
