Creating an ArcMap ProjectWhat is a “Project”?
•Has an .mxd file extension
•A set of rules and pointers to data
•Does not contain data itself
•Saves symbology, layer order, layout
design, graphics, labels

Symbolizing Data
Five ways to symbolize your data:
FeaturesCategoriesQuantitiesCharts*Multiple Attributes*
*Not discussed in this class
26
Introduction to ArcMap 9.3
Symbolizing Data
Features•Only one symbol per layer
Example: Railroads

Symbolizing Data
Categories
•Symbolize your data based on values from a field in your table.
1. Unique Values2. Unique Values, many fields3. Match to symbols in a style
28

Symbolizing Data
Example of Symbolizing with Categories: DEP Properties

Symbolizing Data
Quantities
•Symbolize your data based on quantities (numeric values) from a field in your table.
1. Graduated colors or symbols2. Proportional symbols3. Dot density
30

Symbolizing Data
Quantities
Example: Area in square miles of Connecticut towns.

Tables
Tables store the attribute data of your GIS features. Table functions:
1. Open Table and View Contents
2. Show and Hide Columns
3. Calculate Fields
4. Select a user defined set of records
5. Join and Relate Tables

33
Introduction to ArcMap 9.3
Select Records That Meet Certain Criteria
For example, here only Shenipsit State Forest properties are selected.
Size of each parcel in acres is calculated.

The Importance of Metadata
35
Metadata is information about the actual datalayer. It is important to know how, why, and when the data was created. In the example below, suppose we need to find out what the AV_Legend field is. Right click on the DEP Property layer name in the Table of Contents, choose Data, View Metadata and scroll down to Attribute Information.
Introduction to ArcMap 9.336
Av_Legend is described as the “Text field for symbolizing DEP facility types on a map”.
