Reflection of the Week It has often been said that it is not the size or nature of the gift which is important; it is the attitude in which it is given. It is what is in one’s heart that is important. There are many quotes about this kind of
giving, including that wonderful line in the Prayer of St. Francis, “It is in giving that we receive.” Jesus makes reference to the importance of giving in today’s Gospel from St. Mark: “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” Giving a cup of water may not seem significant to us, but to God, who sees into our very hearts, it can be of great consequence. The keys are that the gifts are given out of love, not pity or guilt or because we may be blessed with excess. And they are given in Jesus’ name. Giving, especially of self, is a sign of our commitment to being a disciple of Jesus and as a sign that we truly “Love our neighbor.” Giving in this way is at the nucleus of stewardship. However, it can only be achieved if we have undergone a conversion of heart which leads us to understand that it is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At first glance, the situation of the penitents in the early church is shocking: isolated and labeled, their journey back to fellowship at the Lord’s table seems arduous and even cruel. However, at no time in the process were the penitents lacking the support of the community. Penances were performed for all to see, and we can tell from the homilies of the day that people earnestly desired to see the sinner benefit from the remedy. Tertullian reminded the penitents that they were living among their brothers and sisters, fellow servants of the same Lord, still in the embrace of the Spirit. He tells them that when they extend their hands in blessing to the faithful, it is Christ they touch. He tells them that when they see tears in the eyes of believers, it is Christ who is interceding for them with the Father. There is a treasure of our tradition woven into this history: these people knew profoundly that the prayer of Christ’s body, the church, was the prayer of Christ himself. Prayer was not merely support for a person down on his or her luck; it was effective and necessary. The treasure we can see even through the tangles of history is this: the Spirit of God is poured out on the church, and brings grace, forgives sin, makes us holy, and always calls us to fullness of life.

Papa San Juan Pablo II, Evangelium vitae, 2 © 1995 Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
Se utiliza con permiso. “Although we may feel unsure how best to comfort those who mourn, we must stand with them in their time of suffering. Miscarriage touches the lives of many people, yet all too often this tragedy remains unaddressed. This lack of response not only often leads to unresolved grief, but also fails to clearly manifest our belief that each person, from conception onward, is precious and unique.”
