OFFERTORY Sanctuary Prayer Eric Lewis *OFFERTORY HYMN UMH No. 94 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Leader: Let us share together our prayer of confession. People: We know there are times, O God, when we turn from your steadfast presence. We bow our heads in the appearance of worship of small tablets in our hands. We lose ourselves in pursuit of fleeting entertainment or we succumb to a busyness of our own making that devours our time, taking it away from you, from our beloved ones, from our care of creation. Restore us to receive your fountain of living waters. Help us mend the cracks in our lives and in our faith, so that we may contain your abundant, life-giving love and share it with others. Amen. *THE PEACE Leader: The peace of Christ be always with you. People: And also with you! THE GREAT THANKSGIVING, musical setting TFWS No. 2257-a-d

COMMISSIONING OF JOINT COMMISSION REPRESENTATIVES Clara Ivey and Robin Hinshaw

*HYMN “We Are Called” TFWS No. 2172

pg. 14 *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE A Trumpet Decoration Gilbert Martin

As the cross passes by, you are encouraged to be seated and listen for how the Spirit touches us through music. We understand if you must quietly leave. Go in peace.

*Liturgy by Rev. Karen Clark Ristine, unless otherwise noted. The Great Thanksgiving is revised from Word and Table I (p. 9-10 in The United Methodist Hymnal, copyright © 1989, The United Methodist Publishing House, Nashville, TN) with original text related to the Jeremiah text by Rev. Karen Clark Ristine. The Prayer After Communion is from The United Methodist Book of Worship, pg. 39, copyright © 1992, The United Methodist Publishing House, Nashville, TN.

WE WELCOME the Rev. Dr. Kathleen Black, and give thanks for her ministry as lector, liturgist, and co-celebrant while Rev. Martha Morales is away on vacation. WE ARE GLAD YOU ARE HERE! Children are always welcome in worship; should you need it, childcare is offered during worship. Claremont United Methodist Church is a welcoming and reconciling congregation, affirming its ministry with the whole family of God regardless of age, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, economic situation, or marital status. Claremont United Methodist Church believes its diversity is a blessing through which persons are strengthened to love and serve. INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE IN WORSHIP: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, Claremont United Methodist Church uses inclusive language for Bible readings from the New Revised Standard Version. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are left unaltered. This, we believe, in no way diminishes our commitment to inclusive expression. We invite persons to change the words of hymns deemed to be exclusive so that the hymns might have meaning for all.

Life Goes On will resume its monthly gatherings on Sunday, September 15 at 11:00 a.m. in the Round Building with “Grief: The Long and the Short of It,” an overview of the grieving process, followed by discussion. The Plight of Asylum-Seeking Families Continues to Worsen

We at Claremont United Methodist Church (CUMC) responded swiftly to the need of over 2,700 children of immigrants seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexican border. These children were forcibly taken from their parents and scattered throughout the United States in April and May of 2018. Our church raised over $10,000 to assist with the legal representation of separated children through Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON). The plight continues as more families have been detained in the last couple of months, and the number of children separated from their family continues to grow. In addition to the remaining separated children, there are over 15,000 youth and children at detention facilities throughout the United States.

The CUMC Creative Peacemaking Committee has decided to keep our congregation aware of this urgent need and to encourage church members to continue to support the efforts of JFON by donating funds for the legal representation of separated children and asylum-seeking families currently in detention centers.

Your contribution to CUMC, designated to JFON, will help to ensure that separated children and families in detention facilities receive the legal assistance they need. You can also donate directly to JFON by visiting this link, www.njfon.org. Please open your hearts and prayerfully consider a financial gift. (JFON is an agency of the United Methodist Committee on Relief.)
