BLUEandGREEN Project
will contribute on raising CIIMAR's scientific and technological standards in biorefineries
approach based on marine resources and biotechnology
BLUEandGREEN aims to increase the performance of CIIMAR in the area of Marine Biotechnology, and
joins CIIMAR with four internationally-leading counterparts at the EU level: the University of Helsinki – Finland,
the University of Bergen – Norway, GEOMAR, Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel – Germany,
and Fundación MEDINA – Spain.

International Conference “BLUEandGREEN Leagacy conference”
1 October 2018
The BLUEandGREEN Legacy Conference: Adding Value to Marine Bioresources will be organised in Porto
at CIIMAR headquarters (Porto Cruise Terminal) on the 1st October 2018.
Our seas and oceans with their largely unexplored biodiversity present a high potential for innovation in two
different fronts: the better understanding of marine and maritime resources and its biodiversity, and a more
efficient exploitation of their economic and scientific potential. Marine biotechnology is the enabling tool that will
allow translating this potential into real products and services. Thus, boosting marine innovation through
biotechnology-related activities is fundamental for the sustainable exploitation of these resources and for the
stimulation of economic growth, turning central the need to establish a road map of opportunities in the marine
biotechnological area in Portugal contributing to the European Bioeconomy Strategy. More information can be
found Here.
BioMarine Business Convention 2018
2-4 October 2018
BioMarine Business Convention will take place in Cascais, Centro de Congressos do Estoril, from 2nd October
to 4th October.
If you are participating in the BLUEandGREEN Legacy Conference, join the BioMarine Business Convention
and use the free BUS to go directly to BioMarine in the morning of the 2nd of October.

International Conference "Blue Biotechnology in the Baltic Sea Region - from Science to Business"
22-24 August 2018
As part of the EU INTERREG BSR project Baltic Blue Biotechnology Alliance, the international conference 'Blue
Biotechnology in the Baltic Sea Region – from Science to Business' will take place in Greifswald, Germany, on
22-24 August 2018. Newest results in basic and applied science and successful results of economic
implementation will be showcased. The event will cover topics such as industrial applications of marine
organisms and biomass, marine biotechnology networks and business development and legal aspects and
patenting. Up to 120 scientists, entrepreneurs and stakeholders from the public and the private sector are
expected.

Baltic Blue Biotechnology
Alliance pitching event for
blue biotechnology
innovators
Copenhagen, Denmark
10 April 2018
In its continued efforts to support the development of sustainable blue biotechnology products and services, the
INTERREG BSR-funded Baltic Blue Biotechnology Alliance (ALLIANCE, https://www.submariner-
network.eu/projects/balticbluebioalliance) consortium gave the opportunity to start-ups and associations to
present their promising idea to an international panel of business and scientific experts in marine biotechnology.
As a result of this pitching event, four candidates were invited to join the ALLIANCE mentoring programme. The
ALLIANCE consortium will assist them by matching their needs to the right services and facilities throughout the
Baltic Sea Region, from scientific and technical support to financial expertise and marketing.
Course on Marine Natural Products: Discovery and structure elucidation
CIIMAR, Leixões Cruise Terminal, Matosinhos - Portugal
25-28 June 2018
In the scope of the BLUEandGREEN project, CIIMAR and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel
organised a course on state-of-the-art techniques for discovery, isolation and structure elucidation of marine
natural products. The programme included lectures and practical lessons focused on MS- and NMR-based
structure elucidation, computational predictions, X-ray crystallography, dereplication, molecular networks,
synthesis and medicinal chemistry, metabolomics and chemical imaging.

The Portuguese Blue Bioeconomy’s
Role
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation,
Lisbon - Portugal
24 May 2018
Bluebio Alliance, together with Oceano Azul Foundation and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, organised the
Strategic Think Tank “The Portuguese Blue Bioeconomy’s Role: National solutions for global challenges”.
After a morning with national and international keynote speakers from companies of the bioeconomy area: The
Navigator Company, Bio-based Industries Consortium, Unilever, Lego and Olmix, relevant, parallel sessions
were organised.
The BLUEandGREEN project had the opportunity to be involved in the Think Tank parallel sessions as
rapporteur: Sustainably feeding of the growing population; Climate change and CO2 control; Aging population
and Wellbeing; Management of bioresources and Plastic reduction.
The collected information will be of major importance for the under construction Blue Biotechnology National
Roadmap: Driving the BLUEandGREEN economy in Portugal, in the scope of the BLUEandGREEN project.
Marine Biodiversity and Natural Products Meeting ESPOL, Guayaquil - Ecuador
14 June 2018
In the framework of a collaboration between MEDINA and CENAIM (Centro Nacional de Acuicultura e
Investigaciones Marinas), Carmen Ramos participated in a Meeting on Marine Biodiversity and Natural Products,
hosted in ESPOL (Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral), Guayaquil - Ecuador. With the scope to present the
results of the Project developed by CENAIM researchers entitled “Characterization of the biodiversity of marine
invertebrates and associated bacteria at the taxonomic and metabolomic scale and their applications for human
and animal health”, Carmen Ramos had the opportunity to discuss about MEDINA’s Drug Discovery Platform in
her talk “Natural Products in Drug Discovery”.

Oceano Azul Foundation and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation launched a business accelerator program
named Blue Bio Value dedicated exclusively to the blue bioeconomy. The program is organized by Fábrica de
Startups, in collaboration with BlueBio Alliance and Faber Ventures.
Blue Bio Value is the first international business accelerator that scales up marine bio-based solutions to global
market applications in different industries, resorting to science-based and biotech innovations, while helping to
tackle important societal challenges.
