I have my bachelors from Oakland University in Elementary Education.

Endorsed in Language Arts.

Student taught second grade at Bemis Elementary.

This is my second year teaching- I'm energetic and bursting with fresh ideas!

Snacks

Students must bring a HEALTHY snack for morning snack time (chips, cookies, Fruit Roll-Ups etc. are not acceptable)

Suggestions:

Cheese and crackers, fresh or dried fruit, vegetables with hummus or dressing, yogurt, whole grain crackers or cereals, nuts ands seeds, popcorn...

Positive Reinforcement

Punch cards

Students earn punches for being good leaders, exceptional work and effort, helping without being asked etc.

When a student earns 10 punches they choose a reward

Pom-Pom jar

When the jar is full, we will vote on a class reward

Math Expressions

Supports the CCSS by covering select concepts for deeper mastery (less units)

Proven to be effective in raising student achievement

Interactive and digital resources to help keep students engaged and productive (see classroom website under "resources")

Math

Your child will be taught a number of strategies.

The idea is for them to add to their "tool box", not to be proficient in every strategy.

At times they will get frustrated, but only because challenging them to explain their thinking is still new to them. Trust the process!

"Math Talk": reveals understanding/misunderstanding, supports deeper reasoning/lang. development/social skills

Math

Students will keep their math homework journals at home.

When math homework is assigned, students will complete the front-side of the worksheet and save the "Remembering" side for in-class work the next day.

Reading

Reading Units: Building Good Habits, Strategies for Comprehension, Character Study, Building Comprehension/Reading with Fluency/Story Elements, Nonfiction Reading Strategies, Building Stamina

Students are expected to read for 15 minutes a night.

Book Projects

At the start of each month, students will be assigned a book project that will be due at the end of the month.

Projects are to be completed at home and will be presented in class.

Work on presentation skills.

Writing

Writing Units: Small Moments, Writer's Craft, Revision, Opinion Writing, Personal Expertise, Realistic Fiction, Shared Research and Informational

Science and Social StudiesScience units: insects, air and water, sound, balance and motion

Social studies unit: my community and Troy history

Word Study

Children sort words based upon similar spelling principles and learn to make spelling generalizations.

Monday: students receive their spelling list with 5 pattern words and 5 high frequency words

Monday-Thursday: various in-class and at-home assignments will be completed to reinforce the pattern

Friday: spelling challenge

Computer lab time used for blogging, assignments and additional practice with school subjects

Helps students explain their thinking.

Promotes deeper understanding through the use of various routines.

Scholastic Book Club

All book orders are to be placed online at the Scholastic website using our class activation code, which already went home.

Field Trips

If you would like to chaperone a field trip or volunteer within the classroom you must fill out a background check form.

Please have your child wear our class shirt on the day of a field trip unless otherwise instructed.

The Leader In Me

The Leader in Me is an innovative, schoolwide model that empowers students to be leaders in the 21st century.

The 7 Habits: be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, win-win, seek first to understand then to be understood, synergize, sharpen the saw.

Teachers had a 3-day training in August
