Feast of Saint Paul of the Cross October 19, 2019

Prayer to St. Paul of the Cross

My dear Parishioners, As we here in the parish are preparing to celebrate the Feast Day of our Patron, St. Paul of the Cross and shortly after that, what has become an annual Revival each November, a special synod is going on in Rome, a month-long meeting of bishops and others on the Am-azon region of South America. You must have heard about it; preparations were underway for the past 18 months. It is an extremely important meeting in that it is dealing, really, not simply with concerns about Ama-zonia and its people, but the world and our worldwide Church. Amazonia contains the world’s largest rain-forest and is inhabited with numerous tribes of indige-nous peoples. The formal title of the synod is: “The Amazon: New Paths for the Church and for Integral Ecology.” That has frightened some people including some high ranking Catholic clergy who, apparently think the Church may be wandering too far away from the sacristy. But Holy Father Francis, in his homily at the opening Mass the other day, spoke primarily to the bishops in attendance about “Rekindling our gift in the fire of the Spirit,” rather than “letting things take their course without doing anything.” If you are keeping up with the news—other than what is happening within the D.C. beltway—you know that there are many ur-gent economic, social, and religious issues that compel the Church to confront in that nine-nation area of the world. Pope Francis encouraged the synod participants to act boldly reminding them that “Jesus did not come to bring a gentle evening breeze, but to light a fire on the Earth.” As we are about to celebrate the life of our parish and set about reviving our spirits, we would do well to heed the Holy Father’s urgings. St. Paul of the Cross Parish will soon be marking its 65th anniversary. What has changed since 1955? What needs to change today and tomorrow and the day after as we creatively seek new ways of announcing the Gospel? Come, Holy Spirit! —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

28º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 13 DE OCTUBRE DE 2019

Page 4
