This event has been generously funded by the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS). Through the

assistance of a $10,500 faculty grant, we are able to offer each of our participants an organized

program, consultation, materials, travel reimbursements, and a small stipend. Since we obtained the

grant, ACS continued to support our programming efforts. Many thanks to Elizabeth Peifer for

recommending Michel Aaij, our keynote speaker--a remarkable teacher-scholar and active Wikipedian

(notable for over 60,000 edits!). We'd also like to thank Dave Morton for publicizing our event on the ACS

website.

We deeply appreciate Spelman OSP for helping us secure the grant and navigate the post-award

process. Claudia Scholz's grant writing expertise enabled us to produce a strong proposal, and Chandra

Chambliss guided us through key budget procedures.

We are also indebted to Myra Burnett, Spelman's Provost. With her assistance, we were able to

purchase dinner and daytime meals for all of our guests. MIT Services was also very instrumental to our

organizational efforts. Blanche Bryant booked the ideal room for our event and provided expert

guidance about free, accessible MIT services that helped us reduce our budget.

We'd also like to thank the Wiki Education Foundation for providing us with technical and pedagogical

resources. Through the guidance of Helaine Blumenthal and Jami Mathewson, we were able to provide

our faculty with a structured mechanism for learning about the potential of Wikipedia as an invaluable

site for writing, research, and digital literacy.

Finally, we'd like to thank all of our participants for spending their time and energy on applying to the

Symposium. Your willingness to participate presents a great opportunity for us to network across

disciplines, strengthen our writing pedagogy, and clarify our personal and professional relationship to

the growing power of Wikipedia.

WELCOME TO THE SYMPOSIUMWelcome to "Integrating Wikipedia into Writing-Intensive Courses at ACS Colleges!" This event focuses on

three interdependent issues:

1. Students won't stop citing Wikipedia in their papers.

2. Wikipedia's coverage lacks gender, racial, and linguistic diversity.

3. Who are Wikipedia's authors and how can I trust their expertise?

One or more of these concerns can be traced to an underlying cause that probably drives your passion for

teaching and research: how should we define the causal and ethical relationship between information,

knowledge, and truth?

This philosophical inquiry warrants our engagement as teachers, scholars, and/or program administrators

because it affects our research and pedagogy. How do you "sell" knowledge when so many people are

making claims to it? What is the value of institutional and/or disciplinary specific practices and products

compared to those of the commons?

In the past decade, we've observed web 2.0 technologies like wikis, blogs, and other social media

scaling information production, management, and distribution. Although students are writing more than

ever before in their 'personal' media lives, they are writing less and less in traditional educational spaces

(Haven 2009; Kleinfeld 2010; also see Bok 2006; Foster 2006; Griffin and Minter 2013; Lee 2013; Hinkel

2015). This symposium will introduce you to some of the ways in which the data deluge--and the

composition practices that contribute to it--impact teaching and learning. We'll consider how Wikipedia

offers an excellent site to observe some of these effects through critical practice and collaboration.

We're grateful for your participation!
