Preacher’s Note - Denied, Betrayed, Arrested, Crucified, Resurrect-

“52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place.

For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that

I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than

twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then should the Scriptures be ful-

filled, that it must be so?”

Matthew 26:52-54

Shortly after our passage for this morning we find these words on

Jesus’ lips: “Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will

at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?” It seems he has

forgotten the three petitions to let this whole thing pass earlier that even-

ing in Gethsemane. Perhaps it isn’t that he has forgotten, but that he has

placed everything at the feet of his Father already. The appeal had al-

ready been made and it supplied strength other than angelic armies.
