Morning Prayer Elder Betty Kasperski

*Introit Goodness Is Stronger than Evil Hymnal 296

Lent is a time for stepping back from the daily routine of life and thoughtfully reflecting

upon our relationship with Christ. In the early church, the weeks before Easter were a time

of preparation for new believers who were to be baptized on Easter morning. Over time,

others began to adopt this season of reflection and preparation and Lent (from a German

word denoting “springtime”) grew into a significant season in the church year. Lent is a time

of making personal changes, both permanent and temporary, that cause us to pause and

consider; more lasting changes that both honor tradition and take us to new places; changes,

not for change sake, but changes that will open our souls to God’s work of salvation and

sanctification. Yes, Lent has a somber tone, but Lent is also a time of celebration. For above

all, Lent reminds us that God continues to claim and love us even in the midst of our

rebellions. Lent is a season of humbly but joyfully affirming God’s love and grace!

*Call to Worship John Bowring, 1825 (Galatians 6:14)

Leader: In the cross of Christ I glory, towering over the wrecks of time;

People: All the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime.

Leader: When the woes of life overtake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy:

People: Never shall the cross forsake me; lo, it glows with peace and joy.

Leader: When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way,

People: From the cross God’s radiance streaming, adds more luster to the day.

Leader: Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified;

People: Peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all timeabide.

Behold, Now is the Day of Salvation 2 Corinthians 6:2

Faith Sharing with Families

Following this time, the children are invited to attend age appropriate classes related to today’s service.

*Call to Confession & Unison Confession Psalm 51, selected verses

God of the Healing Cross,

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to

your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly

from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my

transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I

sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your

sentence and blameless when you pass judgement. Create in me a clean

heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away

from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me

the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Anthem Bless the Broken Road Chancel Choir

I set out on a narrow way many years ago,hoping I would find your love along the broken road.But I got lost a time or two, wiped my brow and kept pushing through.I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you;but every long lost dream led me to where you are.Moments that broke my heart, they were like northern starspointing me on my way into your loving arms.

This much I know is true:That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.

I think about the years I’ve spent just passin’ through.I’d like to have the time I lost and give it back to you;but you just smile and take my hand.You’ve been there, you understand; it’s all part of a grander planthat is comin’ true. That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.

Now I’m just a rollin’ home into my Savior’s arms.This much I know is true: That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~OUR LENTEN CROSS: During our last homecoming celebrating, we ordered dozens ofcommemorative plates. When we received the plates we discovered the word “Delaware”was misspelled. The plates were replaced but “What should we do with the misspelledplates?” We decided to use them during lent in a rather ususal way. The result is thecross hanging in the chancel. Each week, we add more broken prices to the cross. Whatdoes this cross, filled with broken pieces of misspelled plates symbolize to you?
