Dean Mitchell, as many of you know, is from Quincy and is recognized nationally for his work. He gave a two hour gallery talk the Saturday after his opening that was not to be missed.
As we wrap up the year with 100 artists participating in the Annual Holiday Show, we look forward to a very spe-cial 2015. The Art & Soul Celebration is back. The theme is “Everyone is an Artist” where guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite artists, artist subjects or art move-ment! There will be entertainment galore, live and silent auctions, and delicious treats to eat! Be sure to watch your mail for follow-up information, and check out our website for ideas for costumes and pricing for sponsorships and tickets. You do not want to miss out on the fun.
Sincerely,

From the
ExecutiveDirector
As we wrap up another year, we have a lot for which to be thankful. First and foremost, we are on better footing than ever.
We are marching towards a very bright future, thanks to a supportive board and the help of a league of volunteers, members, and community supporters.
This past year of exhibitions have brought a plethora of talents and experience for the community to enjoy. Rang-ing from works from our permanent collection and the personal collection of our very own Richard Puckett, LeM-oyne continues to demonstrate that we are the preemi-nent gallery and arts education center in Tallahassee.Among the many wonderful exhibits we had this year were two wonderful solo shows, Ken Falana and Dean Mitchell. The Quilters Unlimited did not disappoint with one of the most frequently visited exhibits outside of the Holiday and High School shows.

June Strauss honored by contemporary new fountain
As November slowly ambles into December, our beautiful north Flor-ida enters into its annual
schizophrenic weather phase--just in time for the holidays. On Monday, high temperatures reach for the low 80’s with lazy sunshine and on Tuesday, torrential downpours and wind. By Wednesday, the temperatures plummet and freeze warnings appear in the forecast. The only constant is change. There is, for me, such incredible art in the brief period we call winter in Tallahassee. I love the contrast of a brilliantly red Japanese Maple in the shadow of a decades old Sabal Palm, and the late blooming azaleas that choose autumn instead of spring, beaming next to now leafless crepe myrtles. The contrast is breathtaking and the art of nature is superb.
On Thanksgiving, we launched our 51st Annual Holiday Show, known as “The Art of Giving”. For more than half a century, LeMoyne has ushered in the holiday season with our gallery beautifully decked out in seasonal artistic cheer. With more than 100 participating artists, the show is both stunning and offers so many gift ideas for every-
one on your list! In addition to the wonderful artwork and hundreds of handmade ornaments, LeMoyne also offers center memberships as well as sponsorship opportunities. Beginning at only $35 for individual membership and $60 for family membership, these are gifts of art year round. Scholarships for LeMoyne’s summer camp program and other educational events are also available.
This year has been a year of goal setting and vision plan-ning as LeMoyne begins its second half century. For sev-eral years following the tremendous economic downturn in 2008, LeMoyne struggled financially. With strong staff, board and volunteer leadership, as well as community sup-port, that potential crisis was avoided. We continue to seek new and traditional revenue streams as we move forward. The LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts is committed to the greater Tallahassee community and sincerely appreciates you, our members, for the sustaining gift you give to us!
Many wishes for a wonderful holiday season, and a most healthy and happy 2015!

LeMoyne Re-dedicates Fountain in Memory of the late June StraussLeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts (LeMoyne), in collaboration with James Hughes Landscaping (JHL), has new fountain in the front yard of the gallery this fall. The fountain was unveiled with a rededica-tion to honor the memory
of the late June Strauss, who was a supporter of LeMoyne and the arts. Strauss was one of the four women that started LeMoyne in the early 1960s.
Raised in Jacksonville with a passion for culture and the arts, Strauss saw a void in Tallahassee and joined with other community leaders to inaugurate LeMoyne in 1963. She served on the founding board of directors that racially integrated the art and social communities through cultural
activities; and then, she later served as president of the board and oversaw a major renovation in 1976.
“I remember how the art at LeMoyne extended outdoors with the Helen Lind gardens,” explains Julie Bettinger, a Strauss’ daughter. “That was one of my favorite spots as a young girl, shadowing my mother when we visited after school. LeMoyne was just part of our landscape, our world.”“It’s so appropriate that LeMoyne dedicate something there to remember June because she had such passion for the creation and the success of LeMoyne, and its place in the Tallahassee community,” said Leslie Redding, also a daughter of June Stauss.
Strauss passed away in December 2010 and is survived by six children, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchil-dren.
JHL—the company that will create and donate the foun-tain—is a local landscape design and build firm that will celebrate its 10th anniversary July 2015.

Volunteer Spotlight
For this issue of the newsletter, we had the privilege of inter-viewing board members and Art & Soul Celebration Co-Chairs, Rene Lynch and Michael Davino. Taylore Maxey (TM): Thank you for agreeing to this interview, Rene and Michael. Will the two of you begin by telling the read-ers about yourselves?
Rene Lynch (RL): I am a life-long Floridian who lives in Tallahassee. Extensive travel to tropical shores, in-cluding a yearlong sabbati-cal on the Garden Isle of Kauai, provides an endless array of subject matter. My previous work life includes 19 years in the technology industry and several years as an interior designer. I left a teaching position in Inte-rior Design at Florida State University to create art full time. My work can be seen by appointment at my stu-dio at Railroad Square Art Park and as a part of the Ten Artists, LTD ongoing exhibit at Tallahassee Eye Associ-ates.
Michael Davino (MD): I run a financial advising prac-tice with Waddell & Reed here in Tallahassee, with my business partner Alan Null. I graduated a proud Seminole from Florida State University with a Bachelors of Science in Finance. This upcoming March I will be marrying my fiancé’, Ms. Kyle McCleary. With a strong passion for the community
and helping non-profit or-ganizations excel, I dedi-cate a lot of my time as the Vice President of Tallahas-see’s Working Well Program “Promoting Wellness in our Workplace” and as board member here at LeMoyne. My greatest passion is dedi-cating time to animal rescue efforts, and I currently serve as President of the board of Tallahassee’s Animal Shelter Foundation. TM: Rene how and when did you get into art?
RL: I studied art and hu-manities in high school and college, and traveled to mu-seums all over Europe and the US. My mother began to paint when she was in
her 30’s and I followed suit. I started with watercolor les-sons with Wendy Cummis-key and Joe McFadden, then took various workshops. I refined my skills while in graduate school in the In-terior Design Program at Florida State University. My ‘breakthrough’ came while we lived in Hawaii and I had uninterrupted time to paint.
TM: Can you explain to the readers the type of art you do?
RL: I work in water media, mostly watercolor, on paper and on board. I love to paint big, bold florals and tropical subjects. I recently began to experiment with abstract mixed media works.
TM: Very nice. As you know, LeMoyne is gearing up for its annual Art and Soul Celebration in Feb-ruary. As Co-Chairs of the event, can the two of you tell the readers about the event?
RL: We are so excited! LeM-oyne’s annual Art & Soul Celebration will be Thurs-day, February 26, 2015 at the University Center Club from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. We are asking attendees to dress up like their favorite artists, paintings or move-ment. Tickets are available for $95.00 for non-members and $75.00 for LeMoyne members and can be pur-chased at LeMoyne or on-line at www.leymone.org.
TM: What should attend-ees expect at this year’s event?
MD: It will be one of the most exciting events of 2015! The entertainment is amazing and the atmosphere will be unbelievable. Gary Yordon will be our Master of Cer-emonies, there will be a live auction, silent auction, and a “pop-up” photo booth!
TM: Fantastic! I cannot wait. How long have you two been members of LeMoyne and sat on the board of directors?
RL: I have been on LeM-oyne’s board since Sep-tember 2013. I have been a member for several years prior to that.
MD: Since 2011 for both.TM: As we conclude this in-terview, what would you say are some of the benefits of being a member of LeM-oyne Center for the Visual Arts?
RL: I love the sense of com-munity we have as mem-bers of the Lemoyne family.
MD: The best part is all of the events Lemoyne holds throughout the year. Whether its events like Chain of Parks, Art & Soul, or the Holiday Show, or the First Friday events, it is al-ways a great time to fellow-ship with other members, view art, and spend time with new friends at LeM-oyne.
If you know of a LeMoyne member we should highlight in our newsletter, e-mail Ann Kozeliski at [email protected].
