PRE-ARRIVAL In this section you’ll find a list of activities to complete before you join us in September.

READING LIST

On our Illustration course we expect our students to be active in seeking out art to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the creative world.

Here you’ll find a suggested reading list including books and magazines, which are all available at: www.amazon.com and the UCA Library.

You can also find them at all good book stores such as Waterstones, where we recommend you spend time browsing over the summer.

Keep this list as a starting guide to help your studies over the next few years. We’ve also included a list of websites that we’d like you to explore.

Enjoy the variety and be inspired!

You’ll incur some additional costs during the course. We’ll pay for materials used during inductions, specifically during printmaking inductions. Some materials, such as basic paper, charcoal and ink will be provided free of charge.

Once printmaking inductions are over, you’ll have to pay for printmaking materials such as screens, plates, paper, etc. Any specialist materials which you might require, for example inks, liquid watercolours and fine art inkjet paper, you’ll have to pay for yourself.

As an Illustration student you’ll begin to build up a variety of materials which you like to work with as the course progresses.

The basic materials list we have given you is a starting point from which to build your own specialist materials tool kit.

- A1 portfolio – essential for handing work in for assessment- Pair of compasses- Steel ruler – at least 50cm long- Metal set square- Dip pen and range of drawing nibs- Range of pencils – please no ‘H’ pencils- Graphite sticks- Old toothbrush- Putty or kneadable rubber- Glue – both Pritt Stick and PVA- Gouache paints – quality rather than quantity- Watercolour paints – quality rather than quantity- Inks – quality rather than quantity- Scissors- Scalpel and blades – Swann Morton handle / 10A blades (with a cork to store safely)- Stanley knife- Cutting matt – At least A3 size, ideally larger- Chalk or pastel fixative- Chalk pastels - Coloured pencils- Masking tape- Roll of lining paper – try B&Q or Wilkinsons- Brushes – a wide range, to include watercolour, sizes 3,6,12, and decorator’s brushes- Sketchbooks - preferably hardback not spiral bound in a range of sizes (A3 and A5 are good)

COURSE COSTSEQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS NEEDED

In the past, the course has made overseas trips to Paris and Barcelona. Overseas trips are not mandatory but you’re expected to pay the costs of joining such a trip. To give you an idea of what you should budget for, the 2015/16 Paris trip cost approx. £270 for travel and hotel, and the Barcelona trip approx. £315 for travel and hotel. Usually each year group will have at least one UK trip, which might involve travelling up to London for an exhibition or going to draw on location. UK field trips are sometimes free, but you’re likely to be expected to pay the cost of travel.

VISITS

- ‘Intuos Pen & Touch’ graphics tablet (these are compatible with the drivers installed on campus)- USB storage pen.
