Topics will include:
Space Exploration – NASA for kids Exploring Robotics – NXT MindstormsFamous Explorers - Interview style
3rd grade - Explorations
Our 3rd grade novel choices include Maniac Magee or Peak. We will have many activities including a webquest for our novel.Students will be presenting about different aspects of the book in a variety of formats (PPT, Photostory, Movie Maker, Prezi, Smart, etc…)
3rd grade - Explorations
In grade 3, our independent research
will be a Dream Vacation Project.
3rd grade - Explorations
Topics include: Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg
Two Minute Mysteries
Fibonacci Numbers, Golden Ratio
Reader’s Theater
4th grade - Mysteries
Our research project (I-Search) will be related to natural mysteries,
Wonders of the World, and unsolved mysteries
4th grade - Mysteries
We will work with Lego EV3 Robotics. We will have a friendly
class competition.
4th grade
Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett will be the 4th grade novel.

Structures of Life – Dissection
Structures Around the World
Structure of Government
Research project/I-Search of famous structures
5th grade - Structures
We will also…Introduce basic architectural vocabulary
Use ZOMES kit to build structures
The Wright 3 will be the 5th grade novel

5th grade ROBOTICS COMPETITION
Students will build a robot that can move around and create a “structure.”

5th grade Field Trip
Our fifth grade Discovery students will go downtown for an architectural field trip.
5th grade - Structures
Math Mania…Students in each grade level will be exposed to higher level math and “real-world” problem solving every Monday
SAT Vocabulary…We will learn new words in a fun format.
All DISCOVERY CLASSES
Students are issued a Reference Textbook—this will usually stay at school
Students also have a Study Links and a Math Journal Workbook—homework is typically in one of these, but may come from elsewhere on occasion.
This is a middle school course and will be treated as such.
Expectations are high, but we will also have a lot of fun!
