WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET TO THE CLASSROOM?Be there before the students arrive. Review lesson plans and seating charts to
familiarize yourself with the students names. Students will listen and respect you more if you know their name.
Retrieve attachments from internet. Assemble/organize materials. Introduce yourself to the surrounding classroom
teachers
What if the plans are unclear or materials are missing? Who do you turn to for help?
Team Lead/Dept. Chair/office secretary www.fcps.org
WHAT’S MY JOB? Primary goal is to continue student learning. Focus on instruction
immediately! Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher Use time limits to maintain structure of the lesson. Monitor students at all times.
Stay with students-do not leave them unattended Stay on task Pay attention!
Reading, surfing internet, sleeping and texting are not appropriate activities
www.fcps.org
STAY OFF THE CELL PHONE!
You do not want students on their phones while you are trying to teach, so set a good example by putting your phone away.
Even it there is downtime during a period and it may be tempting to quickly reply to a text or check your email, it’s best to stay off your phone while students are present.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED…
Teacher subs may be asked to cover a class during the teacher’s planning period.
You may be asked to change assignments.
Be as cooperative and flexible as you can. Let the administration know if you are uncomfortable with an assignment.
www.fcps.org
UNSATISFACTORYPERFORMANCE
There may be times when a school may find the services of a substitute are less than satisfactory. Some of the reasons:
Poor classroom management skills Lateness Failing to report to an assignment Inability to follow procedures Insubordination Failure to communicate effectively
Schools have the option to not utilize the services of the substitute in the future. www
.fcps.org
HOW CAN I KEEP STUDENTS ON TASK?
Acknowledge and reinforce appropriate behavior with positive verbal reinforcements
Be actively engaged with your students Maintain classroom management-
remember students will test you Be fair, firm, consistent and calm Don’t listen to students who say “but our teacher
lets us…” Students are counting on you to create a positive
atmosphere where learning to take place No food - beware of food allergies www
.fcps.org
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CORRECT STUDENTS?
• State expectations and refrain from engaging in arguments with students
• Don’t embarrass students. Avoid disciplining a student in front of their peers
• Never use physical force! • Do not touch students!
Remember the “Teacher Face” www
.fcps.org
PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE
Level 1: Ignore inconsequential behavior
Level 2: Proximity promotes on task behavior.
Level 3: Address student directly, quietly and privately and calmly when possible. Keep your cool!
Level 4: Call for help when appropriatewww.fcps.org
WHEN SHOULD I CALL FOR HELP?
If intervention strategies are not effective. If a student or students are willfully disobedient or
fail to identify themselves. If common sense dictates. In the interest of health or safety. If you don’t know what to do.
Call the front office, Guidance Counselor or Administrator and request assistance. www
.fcps.org
WHICH CAN YOU IGNORE?WHICH MUST YOU REPORT?WHICH CAN BE DEALT WITH?

WHAT IS SEXUAL HARASSMENT? Conduct that is unwelcome and sexual in nature
Conduct that denies or limits a student's ability to participate in or benefit from a school’s education program.
This can be verbal, non verbal or physical.
Both male and female students can be victims of sexual harassment, and the harasser and the victim can be of the same sex.
YOU NEED TO REPORT HARASSMENT! Policy 318, Sexual Harassment
END BULLYING!• Bullying is generally defined as unwelcome behavior that occurs over a

WHAT TYPES OF DISCRIMINATION AND BULLYINGPLAGUES THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY?
LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning or Queer) bullying includes, but is not limited to: Abuse (Both Physical and Verbal) Exclusion from social or professional events and
activities Ignoring claims of the LGBTQ members regarding
physical or mental abuse Indirect abuse, such as graffiti or gossip

Stop and Report!
POLICY 443 - CREATING WELCOMING & AFFIRMINGSCHOOLS FOR TRANSGENDER & GENDERNONCONFORMING STUDENTS
FCPS BOE approved this policy in June 2017 In part, the policy allows students to choose which bathroom to
use based on the gender with which that student identifies. It also gives any student who is uncomfortable for any reason
using a gender-segregated bathroom the option to use a safe and non-stigmatizing alternative — such as privacy curtains, provisions to use private restrooms or office restrooms, or a separate changing schedule in locker rooms.
The policy also allows transgender students to participate in sports that align with their gender identity. So, a transgender girl could play girls soccer, and a transgender boy could play baseball. The policy also says that students are not required to disclose their gender identity.
Sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are all protected classes within the FCPS non-discrimination policy.
LEGAL CONCERNS
Can I be sued?Should I break up a fight? If a child needs to leave the room due to disciplinary reasons, how should I do that? www
.fcps.org

SOCIAL NETWORKS
What you say on your own time, in the privacy of your home, on your own computer, could hurt you.
“Be very careful and very mindful not to do or say things while using online venues such as Facebook that could harm your professional reputation and result in disciplinary consequences. Even is you are communicating in an invitation only social network, don’t expect that your information will not be easy to find or subject to a “friend” forwarding it to the world.” Jamie Cannon, Esq., Chief of Staff and Legal Counsel, FCPS
