Welcome everyone to Bar 5’s 39th Bull sale. We are very proud of our record of supplying quality bulls to the North American cattle Industry over the past 39 years and look forward to our 40th bull sale Anniversary. We think our offering this year is one of the strongest in many years with many great performing animals with a number of new outcross genetics. Our mix includes fullbloods, Fleckvieh, polled, homozygous, with a number of handpicked Angus animals included. We welcome the involvement of a number of breeders who have been part of our test program. As in the past, we have included a very exclusive group of heifers ready to be bred with the bull of your choice or flushed. Our program has remained the same i.e. breeding improved quality Simmentals through a scientific approach, introducing new outcross genetics, cross breeding, and raising a small group of exclusive Angus cattle. Friday night we offer a barbeque, sit down dinner, music, and fellowship. This year we are also offering an auction of Semen and Embryos from the heart of the program. We would like to thank all buyers and guests for supporting our program over the years and of course we would also thank the participants in this year’s sale as well as the Bar 5 staff for doing a great job once again. This year as well as showing all the cattle on video we are also offering the sale on the internet for the buyer’s convenience. TERMS & CONDITIONS Animals sell under the standard terms and conditions of the respective Breed Association. Ex. Simmental – Canadian Simmental Association. Hybrid cattle sell under a complete breeding guarantee, found on our MFB site.

INSURANCE Bar 5 Simmental Farms recommends animals bought at the sale are insured after purchase with your current insurance company.

“DNA” PARENT VERIFICATION We DNA all of our animals so every bull and heifer has its Dam and Sire DNA’d. We have collected hair on every Bar 5 bull and heifer through the Test Station, for future DNA Marker or DNA recordation. We believe in two responsibilities deeply. 1) Genetic Integrity & 2) Genetic Improvement.

BULLS CAN STAY If you aren’t ready for your bull right away that’s fine – we will keep him here until April 30, free and then $5.00 per day. All bulls not being picked up sale day MUST be insured by the new owner.

SIgHT UNSEEN PURCHASE PROgRAM If you are unable to attend the sale but are interested in a bull, give any of the team a call and they will personally go over the bulls and your program and recommend the bull that meets your needs.

CSA PERCENTILE gRAPHThe percentile graph does not show anything that is not already published on the website, it just shows the percentiles (where the animal fits into the CSA population) in a visual way. In this example, the EPD from the animal are shown on the top line, the next line shows accuracy or how much information was used in calculating the EPD, the third line shows the percentile rank or where the animal fits. 50 is right at breed average. Blue lines on the graph to the left of the 50% show cattle that are below breed average for the trait and the green lines to the right show cattle that are above breed average for the trait. In this example the sire is in the top 15% for CE. In other words, 85% of the Simmental in Canada are harder calving and 15% are easier calving. He is in the 55th percentile for carcass weight so 55% of the Simmental produce more carcass weight and 45% produce lighter carcasses. The trait is shown to the left of the graph and the percentile rank is shown to the right.IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: the graph and percentiles do not show whether an animal is good or bad, only where they fit in the population. For example, this sire had good CE and powerful growth, but very poor maternal characteristics. This is not good or bad, but simply mean that he may be a better fit to produce feeder cattle than replacement heifers. Depending on what the customer needs/wants will determine what type of cattle they need. For example a producer may want a sire in the top 10% CE for use on heifers and growth below average, but may want well above average growth for use on cows and accept lower CE.

Breed Association genetic Evaluations, within Breed EPD’s onlya) Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Categories reported are CE, BW, WW, YW, MW, MILK, MCE, CW REA, FAT, YG, and MARB. Please refer to the CSA website www.simmental.com for the Glossary & descriptions. % Rk-Percentile Value from 1-95 is the score given as a percentage value for ease of comprehension for example a % 25 means the animals is in the top 25% while a % of 75 means the animal is in the bottom 25% of all the animals in the breed.

EPD’s are expected progeny differences or deviances. They only predict future performance differences based on reported past differences. One record by its self is of no use, as it has no contemporary group to compare to and no difference to measure. Also 50 animals in the same group with all the same measurement are of no use and are edited out because there was no measured difference or deviation. It is easy to see that growth traits like BW, WW, and YW are always going to have differences, thus breeders only have to worry about your CG (contemporary group). And that the sires you have in that CG tie your herd data to the broad data base, and thus your data ties into the broad data set. Including a couple of AI sired progeny in the CG goes a long way in increasing the accuracy of your own sire’s data.

ii) Adjusted Values W Index: Ratio of AWW compared to a contemporary group of calves that have all been treated the same since birth, an indication of mom’s milk & performance.AWW: Adjusted weaning weight adjusted to 205 days of age with age of dam adjustments.AYW: Adjusted 365 day yearling weight. Low BW but extreme high WW: we still say the perfect cow weighs 1300 lbs., but weans off a 1000 lbs calf at 7 months (Act. Wt / Dam Wt.) Our target is 50%.iii) Y Frame Score = 5.5 to 7.0, the Bar 5 desired range, YH – Yearling Height, MH – Mature Heightiv) Density: Aim for over 200 on the AYW/FS or Adjusted Density; using Actual Density of Height/Weight – 220 or 100 kgs. v) Carcass Ultra Sound = Balanced Carcass Values; rib eye – over 1 inch per 100 lbs. REA/CWT, high marbling % in the 3 or more range, & moderate BF of 4-10mm. Actual Carcass Values: REA per 100 lbs: REA/CWT – over 1.6mm Back Fat at 1300 lbs. 6/1300 100= 0.46; Marbling 4.8%. 4.6 to 4.8 – See?vi) SC Testicle measurements = (cms) and min in 33 cms at a year. vii) Yearling Weights: Keep it 1250+ at one year, or a level for your desired carcass size, but remember as you break that 1550 lbs. Barrier: keep your eye on the Density & Frame Score as carcass increase as well.

Aim for these 6 targets and you will make genetic Improvement!!

Not only Grand Champion Bull in KY but also one of the better beef bulls produced by the famous 409M Siska cow. A contender to be in the top half of the offering. A very well put together bull. He catches your eye with his dark colour and overall thickness. His sire Bar 5 440L was one of our highest selling bulls a few years ago. Coincidence? We think not. Genetics are a powerful thing!! A little younger bull that will turn into a nice herd bull by sale time. 418Y is an ET out of Bar 5 Stride. You will be impressed by his thickness, length and depth. Very striking heifer with a powerful pedigree. Half sibs have been sold in almost every Bar 5 sale since we bought her lower frame mother from the Chandor herd. Her Dam sold through our fall sale. Sired by Mr. Powerful makes this a great opportunity. Mr. Powerful happens to be a full brother to our super cow 409M. Sneak in the back door to get some great genetics.

One of the strongest Eltorro calves yet. No surprise that we are selling a flush on her Mom in this sale. This early January calf has style, eye appeal and is very stretchy with lots of capacity. Only a 5.8 frame score, but with a nicely angled shoulder and good neck extension.

Moderate, Maternal, Milk, Muscle, Mellow. We unfortunately lost her 2 weeks old calf this year. That is why we are offering a flush on 416T. Last year’s calf is in this very bull sale as lot #5. Terms: The terms of the sale are cash, credit card or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. ALL CHEQUES SHALL BE MADE PAYABLE TO BAR 5 STOCK FARMS. No sale will be considered valid until and unless payment made out to BAR 5 STOCK FARMS is received and cleared. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Bar 5 Stock Farms reserve full power to resell the animal to the best advantage either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter.

BID: Every animal consigned to the sale will be sold by auction to highest bidder.

DIspUTes: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved if no further bid is made, the buyer will be

CerTIFICATe OF regIsTrY: The proper Registration or Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished.

TrANspOrTATION: Bar 5 will arrange for trucking to your farm or a central point; the following charges will apply unless the buyer wishes to take care of shipping themselves: Local $50, Ottawa Valley $150, Montreal $200, Maritimes $250, Manitoba $200, Saskatchewan & Alberta $250, and U.S.A. $300 plus Export fees.

BULLs: Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over, fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows know to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months following date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will have the right and privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will be suitable for artificial insemination.

FemALes: Cows represented as being “pregnancy tested, safe in calf” have been examined and declared by a licensed veteri-narian and will be accompanied by a veterinarian’s certificate to the effect. They are considered breeders without further guaran-tee. Cows with calves at side shall be considered breeders also without further guarantee; cows and heifers represented at “bred” are not guaranteed safe in calf but they are open heifers selling as individual lots are guaranteed to be breeders. No guarantee shall apply to sucking calves. In the event a female is claimed to be a non-breeder, after having been bred regularly to a bull known to be a breeder and after having been treated by a licensed veteri-narian, the matter must be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months of sale date. For heifers under twelve (12) months of age and purchased as a single lot and who fail to conceive to the services of a bull known to be a breeder, the matter must be reported in writing to the seller before the heifer reaches eigh-teen (18) months of age. The seller shall have six (6) additional months in which to prove any such female a breeder and may use any registered bull of the breed available to him. Any female returned will be at the purchaser’s risk. No guarantee is given that a pregnant female will deliver live calves nor that she will carry calves full term nor that the calf carried will not be mummi-fied. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time.

eXCepTION OF gUArANTee: In cases where the animal is subjected to hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void.

seTTLemeNT: TRANSPORTATION CHARGES ON ANIMALS RETURNED TO THE SELLER ARE FOR ACCOUNT OF THE PURCHASER. No incidental expenses such as feed, A.I. signing fees, interest, veterinary charges, etc., will be charged by the either party when making settlement. If the seller is successful in proving the animal a breeder, the said animal will be reclaimed by the purchaser at his expense. Should the seller fail to prove the animal a breeder, then the buyer is guaranteed a satisfactory replacement, F.O.B. ranch or location of origin or a refund of the actual purchase price paid F.O.B. selling point. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price.

HeALTH: All animals will have passed the required tests as de-termined by Agriculture Canada at sale location. It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into his province, state or country.

ACCIDeNTs: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Owner’s, Sale’s Management or Staff, assume any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property.

rIgHTs AND OBLIgATIONs: The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both.
