Send Your Child to College with Peace of Mind

Oneof the best presents you can buy for your child (and yourself) when your childturns 18 is what we refer to as a “College Power Pack.” It includes three (3) very important documents: a durable power of attorney, a medicalpower of attorney, and a HIPAA release. What are these documents and what willthey do for you and your child?

*DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY - Allows you to manage your child’s legal and financial affairsshould he/she need assistance. Even ifyou are paying the bills, you cannot access personal account

informationwithout the child’s consent. For collegestudents, the Power of Attorney will also enable you to access their personalinformation (i.e. grades) through the school registrar.

*MEDICAL POWER OF ATTORNEY - In case of an accident or incapacity, the Medical Power ofAttorney protects your child by giving you the authority to make health caredecisions for him or her and ensures your right to step in if needed.

*HIPAA RELEASE - Gives your child’s doctorpermission to discuss and release private medical information to you.

Remember, just becauseyou are paying the bills, you do not have the legal right to any legal, financial, or health care information pertaining to your adult child.

We routinely refer tothese three documents as a “College Power Pack” when preparing them for youngadults, but these documents are important for any young person, whether or nothe is in college. If you have childrenor grandchildren who are over the age of 18, they should have these threedocuments in place. If you areinterested in discussing further how these documents can help you protect yourown child or grandchild, please contact us.
