August 2012 Dear Lumen Christi Families: I hope you are having a great summer vacation. The staff and I are very excited about the upcoming school year with all of you. We have already been working hard to prepare for another great year together! You are a critical component to making Lumen Christi a successful school and we thank you for your dedication to your children and to our school. I am writing this letter to share some important information about upcoming events and to provide some details about the school year. Please mark your calendar for the events and dates listed below. Get Acquainted Day – Monday, 8/27 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm It is very important for families to come to Get Acquainted Day this year. Feel free to bring your child’s school supplies with you, as you will be able to go right into the classroom and set up his/her desk or locker. In addition, school pictures will be taken at both sites. Bring the enclosed VIP picture form and payment with you. Yearbooks must be ordered at this time. Student Classroom Assignments Class assignments will be posted in the cafeteria of each building at 3pm on Monday, 8/27. I am confident that every child will benefit from being taught by the excellent staff at Lumen Christi. Please recognize that a great deal of time, energy and professional judgment went into the placement process. The decisions were based upon student needs, the balance of classrooms (such as students’ gender, academic, behavioral and social needs) and a thoughtful team process. Remember that we do not place children together based upon their friendships. First Days of School School starts bright and early on Tuesday, August 28th for all 1st through 8th graders. Kindergarten teachers use the first three days of school for individual student assessment. The first day of school for 3K, 4K, and 5K students is Tuesday, September 4th. Kindergarten Information Kindergarten is a wonderful time for families and we’re all very excited to welcome our new Kindergarteners! The half-day session begins at 8:00 am and ends at 11:30 am and the all day session begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:05 pm. Again, please remember that we stagger the start for all Kindergarten students. Detailed information about Kindergarten items will be provided by your child’s teacher at Kindergarten orientation on August 30th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Getting to School/Bus Information Bus transportation is offered to all Lumen Christi students living in Mequon/Thiensville. Half day Kindergarten students are eligible for bus services to school, but parent transportation is needed at pick up. Information regarding your child’s bus route and pick up times will be arriving in the mail from the bus company shortly. Parents, please talk to your children about the importance of safety when crossing busy streets. Also, please send a note to the teacher any time there is a change to the child’s bus route

Our parking lots at both campuses are very busy places and we want to reduce the traffic jams that happen as a result of too many students getting dropped off/picked up. Student Arrival and Dismissal Time Supervision begins at 7:40 a.m. Therefore, no student should be dropped off prior to this time.

Drop Off Times: 7:40 a.m. Drop-off begins (both campuses) 8:00 a.m. Drop-off ends (Thiensville) 8:05 a.m. Drop off ends (Mequon)

Pick-Up Times: 3:05 p.m. Thiensville

3:10 p.m. Mequon Hot Lunch For all day students, hot lunches may be purchased starting on the first day of school. New this year, milk will not be included in the price of lunch. Hot lunch costs $2.40, which includes lunch and unlimited trips to the fruit and salad bar. Individual milk may be purchased for $0.25. An additional entrée can be purchased for $1.50. Your child will need to have a positive balance in his/her lunch account each month. A new lunch menu will be included in the Thursday folder each month. Forms Included with this back to school pack are numerous forms to sign regarding emergency information, email/photo/internet permission slips and other items. Please read, sign and return these forms on Monday, 8/27 as they are important for your child’s education and safety. Classroom Supply Lists The lists for classroom supplies required for each grade level is found here. To keep costs low, please remember that any of last year’s supplies that you have kept may still be usable. Many families have expressed difficulty finding the 3-pocket folder listed on the school supply list. The school has purchased these and will have them available for purchase at Get Acquainted Day for $1.00. Attention all Volunteers - Safeguarding God’s Family Training Reminder that all volunteers must abide by this program. If you plan to attend a field trip, coach or come into the classroom to help the teachers, you must attend this training. Training does not need to be renewed. please contact our president, Amy Cesarz at [email protected]. The PA has a mailbox in the Mequon copy room and contact information for the PA Board can be found in the Parent/Student Handbook and on the school website. PA meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 9:00 am in Dominiak Hall at the Thiensville Campus. Come get involved with school events and join us for these fun meetings! The PA will again be supplying a phone directory for families for free. Extra copies will be $5.00. Please see the form included in this packet to order your copy. Please join me in welcoming our new families and staff as well as our returning families and staff members. Here’s to a great year together. See you soon! God Bless, Kelly Fyfe Principal

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE We extend a special welcome to Jane Dwyer, the new School Secretary in the Thiensville office. Stop in and introduce yourself! Welcome Jane! THURSDAY FOLDERS: Lumen Christi School will be using the website format completely for Thursday folder information this year. There will no longer be a take home Thursday folder. Just a reminder that all items for the website, and In Brief need to be approved by the principal. Because of the online format of the folders, we are able to extend the deadline for items to be received by Mrs. Fyfe to Tuesday at Noon. Sarah Langhoff will be handling the Thursday folder items for the website. Jane Dwyer will be handling the items for In Brief. REMINDERS:

• Mequon Campus: To avoid being marked as tardy, all students must be in their seats by 8:10 a.m. Let’s try to reduce our tardy rate this year!

• Hot lunch counts are called in to the lunch company by 8:30 a.m. • In order to help our students work on responsibility and to keep

classroom interruptions to a minimum, student pick up announcements will be made twice a day. Changes in transportation will be taken until 12:40. Thank you for your cooperation!

• If you will be picking up your child(ren) after school, please pick them up promptly to avoid aftercare charges.

We are looking forward to seeing your children again and having a great school year!

PARENTS FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Support your parish. Tuition does not replace your parish contribution of $825. If you have a pledge card and parish support recorded with Lumen Christi Parish, you will be entitled to the parish contribution rate. Pay tuition installments on time. The first payment is due on September 1. The second payment is due November 1. The third payment February 1, and the final payment is due April 1. When possible, pay tuition in full. Tuition is being generated by a new computer system this year. Bills will be mailed as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience. Tuition and fees are determined annually by the School Commission in collaboration with the Parish Council. The school is funded through three sources: parish subsidy, tuition and fees, and fund-raising. Every realistic attempt is made to keep the school affordable for all parish children. A Tuition Assistance Fund is administered by the Pastor for those unable to pay in full and who qualify for need. Tuition: 2012-13 Grade 3K:

All users are required to report inappropriate materials or materials that are harmful to minors to the principal or administrators. Use of technology systems is a privilege which may be revoked without cause. Users of the technology systems must file an Acceptable Use Agreement form to be granted those user privileges. Student Acceptable Use Agreement and Network Responsibility Form Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are on school grounds or in a school classroom. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General school rules for behavior and communications apply. The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Students also have the opportunity to enhance and enrich their educational experience at Lumen Christi Catholic School, by linking and interacting with designated and pre-approved sites on the Internet. Independent access to network services is provided to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Access is a privilege, not a right. Access entails responsibility. The School will take all reasonable measures to insure that students are protected from incoming messages, ads, pop-ups, and any and all offensive and inappropriate communication. To insure safe and accurate internet-searching all staff will bookmark or hyperlink any websites or locations for students. All sites will be tested for appropriateness by staff prior to engaging students. Students will not type in web addresses themselves. Searching for information on the Internet will be taught and guided. Subscription Internet searching tools will be employed when feasible and necessary. Individual users of the school computer networks are responsible for their behavior and communications over those networks. It is presumed that users will comply with the school/parish standards and will honor the agreements. Students will treat all equipment with respect. Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibility. Users should not expect that files stored on school servers will always be private. While using the network system at Lumen Christi Catholic School, the following is not permitted:

• Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures • Inappropriate or insulting language • Damaging computers, computer systems or networks • Trespassing in others’ folders, works or files. • Employing the network for commercial purposes • Using inappropriate language • Violating copyright laws • Using another person’s password • Intentionally wasting limited resources • Students should also be aware that sending inappropriate or insulting emails or communication

about other students or school employees outside of school may be investigated by administration.

Lumen Christi Catholic School - SCRIPS June, 2012

Major Retailers Want To Give Our School Money! Dear Lumen Christi Catholic School Parent: We’re pleased to share some exciting news about a fundraising program for our organization. It’s called “scrip”, and it’s the fundraising program that works while you shop. Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our scrip program including JCPenney, The Gap, Shell, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster and many, many others. You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money and help you reduce your Lumen Christi tuition payments. It’s simple -- scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount. Member families like yours buy the certificates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and our school keeps 25% of the difference as revenue. The remaining difference can be applied to your tuition. And scrip is exciting, because everybody wins: • The retailer gets cash up front and repeat business… • You get a powerful fundraising alternative that involves no selling… • Our school gets a regular source of revenue. • You can reduce your tuition! The beauty of scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for our school and reduce your tuition payment without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with scrip at the stores that participate in the scrip program! And scrip can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out. The Lumen Christi Catholic School scrip program promises to be a simple and effective fundraising program. Thanks for your support, and we’ll see you at our one of our meetings! Sincerely, Beth Hartlieb & Katie Hartzheim [email protected] & [email protected]

Lumen Christi INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC – BAND New and Returning Students

Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to a brand new school year. I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful summer we had here in Wisconsin this year. I know it went by too quickly for all of us. Here are some of the details for the upcoming year. Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to join the band program. Among the band instruments that students may select are the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone and drums. (percussion) Each student who enrolls will receive a small-group lesson once per week. Lessons are held at school and scheduled during the school day. (Thursdays) Lesson times rotate weekly so students do not miss the same class each week . Students will experience the enjoyment of learning the language of music, as well as the techniques necessary to play the instrument of their choice. The band represents our school to the community by performing several concerts throughout the year namely The Annual School Christmas Concert, Bayshore Mall Outreach Concert, Spring Concert at the Thiensville Campus as well as participation in the UW Milwaukee Honors Band Festival. The first quarter fee is $93.00 which includes a $5.00 registration/materials fee and will cover most of the standard educational items needed throughout the school year. Subsequent quarters are $88.00. A payment due notice is sent home with each student at the beginning of each band quarter. Beginning band students: A “try out” meeting for Fourth Grade and any other beginning students and their parents will be held Monday, September 10, 2012, at 6:30 pm in St . James Hall . Beginning Band starts Thursday September 13, 2012. This meeting is very important in that the various instruments will be displayed and the children will have an opportunity to try playing the instrument of their choice. Children may be evaluated to see if they are suited to the instrument of their choice. Any questions regarding program policies will be answered. If you do not have an instrument, a local music company representative will be present to explain their rental plan. If you rent an instrument at the meeting, it will be delivered to the school on the day of your child’s first lesson, so please come financially prepared. If you have an instrument, bring it to the meeting so it can be evaluated as to its playing condition. You can use another music shop if you choose. Returning Students A fifteen minute meeting for all returning band students will be held Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 10:23 in the band room. No instruments needed. Band will begin Thursday, September13, 2012. Students should bring instruments and last years music. To enroll as a returning student, please complete and return to the school office, the attached form along with $93.00, which covers the registration/materials fee plus the first 8 lessons.(first quarter) on or before September 10, 2012. Please make checks payable to Gayle Murphy . Learning to play a musical instrument can provide a life-long skill and social activity that can build confidence, improve academic success, increase concentration and enhance social development and self-esteem. I am looking forward to an exciting year of musical growth and enjoyment and hope you will join us. Please complete the attached form and return it to the school office no later than September 10, 2012. Please contact me with any questions you may have. August, 2012 TO: Parents, Teachers and Staff of Lumen Christi School FROM: David G. Foti, Lumen Christi Maintenance Supervisor ______________________________________________________________________________ On October 22, 1986, President Reagan signed into law the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The law required EPA to develop regulations which provide a comprehensive framework for addressing asbestos problems in public and private elementary and secondary schools. On October 30, 1987, EPA published the Asbestos-Containing Materials in School Rule. This New Rule requires all public and private elementary and secondary schools to inspect for asbestos, develop asbestos management plans that address asbestos hazards in school buildings and implement response actions. Every year we must update per EPA rules. Under the law we developed an asbestos management plan and submitted it to the State of Wisconsin in May 1989 (deadline was extended from October 12, 1988). We contracted for a survey-inspection and management plan with American Air and Environmental. The plan has been submitted and a copy is available for review, to anyone interested, at the Parish Office or in the Maintenance Supervisor’s office. By July 9, 1989 implementation of the plan began. Lumen Christi has already removed a great deal of asbestos from various locations and its buildings and the school environment is free from accessible asbestos. A 6-month Inspection Program is done by Lumen Christi Maintenance and repairs are made if needed. We are now using for our 3-year inspections: Sigma Group 1300 W Canal Street Milwaukee WI 53233 And for our abatement projects: Balestrieri Environmental & Development, Inc. N7542 Cardinal Dr Elkhorn WI 53121 If you have questions or wish more information, please contact personnel in the Parish Office or the school Maintenance Office. To date, the designated person is David G. Foti.
