Homeroom introductions

Introduce: Homeroom number, homeroom teachers, orientation teachers and 8th grade Ambassadors

Who is who???

1. Each student gets a plain white sticker.2. Write your first name on sticker.3. Next to your name, draw a picture or write something on the sticker that tells

says something about you.4. The purpose of this is to get to know something about one another and create

a name tag so we get to know each other's names.

Your 8-Period Day● Your school day is divided into 8, 45 minute periods.● You have a different class each period.● You have 4 minutes to get to class. ● You have lunch period 5.

4 marking periods● The school year is divided into 4 marking periods. ● You will get a report card at the end of each marking

period.● Some of your classes will only last one marking period

and you will change classes every 10 weeks.● Some will last a semester(half year).● Most classes will meet the entire year.● 4 quarters = 2 semesters = 1 school year

Odd/Even Days● Our days are numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6.● Most classes happen every day.● Some classes occur on alternating days, either 1,3,5 or

2,4,6. This will be indicated on your schedule. ● Make sure you look at the period, day and term. ● Color coding your schedule with a highlighter may be

helpful.

How to figure out where rooms are:1. We have three main wings A, C and D.2. We have two wings that house exploratory classes such as

Art, Music, PE, Home and Careers and Technology.3. There is a B wing gym and an E wing gym.4. The library is located at the intersection of D wing and

E wing.5. The pool is down past the B wing gyms behind C school.6. The wing is indicated by the first character before the

number. The first number indicates if the room is on the 1 (first) or 2 (second) level.

7. Ambassadors and Peer Leaders will walk you around later.

Lunch● Lunch is period 5 for 6th graders.● There are three lunch rooms you will need to look at your schedule to determine where to go.● B110 is the first cafeteria with the black and white floor.● B109 is the middle cafeteria that serves sandwiches, pizza and hot lunch.● B108 is the far cafeteria that has a salad bar, pizza and fast food.● You need to go to your cafeteria and find a table. You will be given a few weeks to figure this

out then you sign up and that is your seat for the year.● No book bags are allowed on lines.● You can only switch cafeterias once per school year.● Lunch lines can be long especially in the beginning of the year so plan accordingly.● You do not leave the cafeteria without permission.● All garbage must be thrown away when lights flicker. ● When whistle blows and lights are turned off you must be silent and wait for your table to be

dismissed.

Switching Cafeterias● If you need to switch tables after you sign the seating chart you need to get an adult's

approval.● If you would like to switch cafeterias you need to fill out a form available in the office and

there must be a valid reason. If we can make the switch, you will be notified.● Forms will be available starting Friday, September 8th.● Make sure you check with friends that you are planning to sit with that they are staying in

that cafeteria and that there is room at their table.● The forms are due back in the office by Wednesday, September 20th.● DO NOT MOVE INTO ANOTHER CAFETERIA UNTIL YOU HAVE GOTTEN A NEW SCHEDULE

WITH YOUR NEW CAFETERIA ON IT.● After the switch period you need an administrator's approval.

***Remember you are in the cafeteria based on your team and part of middle school is meeting new people and making new friends. ONLY MAKE A SWITCH IF YOU CAN NOT ENJOY LUNCH IN YOUR ASSIGNED CAFETERIA. ONLY 1 SWITCH IS PERMITTED.

Lockers

● You will be assigned a locker today.● Make sure you close and lock your locker each time you use it.● Do NOT share your combination with anyone.● Create a schedule to use your locker a few times during the day.● We strongly encourage you to leave your backpack in your locker and carry

a sling bag to ease the physical burden on your body.● You will practice opening your locker today. Make sure you keep trying

Let’s try to lighten the load!● The Student Advisory Council researched the negative

effects of heavy backpacks on students and presented their findings to our Administration and 6th grade staff.

● Based on their research 6th graders are strongly encouraged NOT to carry heavy backpacks.

● Using and organizing your locker are both very important parts of being a successful students.

● Students are encouraged to carry sling bags during the school day.

questions????This is the time to ask any questions that you have.

Next, you will split into 2 groups. Group 1 will find your locker and practice opening it. (Teachers, ambassadors and peer leaders will be in the hall to help you. Just ask if you need help).

Group 2 will follow your ambassador on a tour of the school. As you tour, have your schedule out and find all of your classes.

You must return to homeroom 15 minutes before the end of the session to ask more questions and close with a pep talk from Kid President. Teachers and ambassadors will bring you to the A wing ramp to get picked up by your parents.
