Roman Citizenship • Citizenship in Ancient Rome

was a privileged political and legal status afforded to non-enslaved people.

• Women-limited citizenship

• ***Rome expanded empire by sending citizens to rule new areas and give new conquered people citizenship***

• ROADS!! -Developed and expanded the state and Empire through building roads

-brought armies, people, travel, trade and goods

Similarities between Roman Republic & U.S. Gov.

1. Both have an executive branch: 1. President2. Consul

2. Both have a legislative branch:1. Congress2. Senate

3. President/Consul can both be removed from power by the government.

4. President and Consul both head the military.

5. President and Consul both enforce the law.

6. Congress and Senate both make laws/balance the budget

7. Political parties exist:1. Rome: Patricians and

Plebeians. 2. U.S.: Republicans and

Democrats.

• Differences between the Roman Republic and U.S. Gov.

1. Rome did not have a judicial branch, whereas U.S. has the Supreme Court.

2. Roman Consuls served 2 yrs. President serves 4 yrs.

3. There are 2 consuls, but only 1 president.

4. Rome could be ruled by a dictator during war and emergencies. This is not legal in the U.S.

5. Roman consuls had religious duties. Presidents do not.

6. Romans could legally own slaves, Americans do not.

7. Roman women could not vote or debate in the assembly. In the U.S. women are active in politics.

• Consul: 2 powerful officials, elected every year.

• Senators: elected officials, governing body elected to make laws.

• Tribunes: Roman Army Commander.

• Citizen Assembly: all citizens who could vote and debate politics.

• Patrician: wealthy citizens.

• Plebeian: Poor citizen.
