Brendan’s Dad
• Six years old
• Diagnosed with Autism March 08
• Started Biomedical Interventions June 08
• Getting Better
The Main Course
• ASD is epidemic.
• ASD is a medical disorder.
• ASD is treatable.
What’s Happening?
Dyssynchrony of Brain Cells
Genetic Predisposition
Toxic Injury
Oxidative Stress
Immune Deregulation
So What Do We Do?
• Know that there are treatment options.– We can’t change the genes.– We can limit toxic exposure!– We can support them metabolically!– We can treat their immune systems!
Prepare for Battle!
• Get organized– Journal– Treatment list with start and stop dates– Daily administration schedule– Appointment calendar– Data Folder (IEPs, lab results, evals.)• http //www.Autism360.org
– Receipt folder– Pictures and videos
Prepare for Battle• A file/folder of trusted information sources• Find a support group• Find a tax and investment advisor• Apply for the Medicaid Waiver– www.in.gov– Governors Council for People with Disabilities• 317-237-7770
– ARC of Indiana ( www.arcind.org )• 800-382-9100
Fighting the Battle
• The biomedical approach is major front to fight the battle but not the only one
– Continue behavioral therapies
– Don’t stop the current medications without coordination with the prescriber.
Fighting the Battle
• Limit Toxic Exposure – Reverse osmosis water filter– Glass cookware– Organic whole foods– Remove toxic chemicals from home– “Green” cleaning and house hold products– Gluten free/casein free diet (GFCF)
Fighting the Battle
• GFCF Diet – Be strict– Give it enough time– Behaviors may get worse before they get better
due to withdrawal.
Fighting the Battle
• Heal the Gut– Address Food Allergies– Remove Food Additives– Whole Foods– Digestive Enzymes– Treat the Dysbiosis– Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SC Diet)
Fighting the Battle
• Treating the Dysbiosis– SC Diet– Olive leaf extract, Oil of oregano, Curcumin– Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics– Vitamin A– Saccharomyces, boulardii
• Help from a medical provider– Anti-fungal medications– Antibiotics– Anti-viral medications
Fighting the Battle
• Decrease Oxidative Stress– Avoid continue toxic exposure– Support detoxification pathways– Omega 3 fatty acids– Chelation
Fighting the Battle
• Support detoxification pathways– Multivitamin– Vitamin B6 and Magnesium– Folinic Acid and Vitamin B12– Calcium– Zinc– Amino acids– Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Fighting the Battle
• Medical provider can help with these detoxification strategies– Urine Organic acid test – Methyl-cobalamin (methyl-B12)– IV Glutathione– Hyperbaric Oxygen– Chelation
Fighting the Battle
• Chelation– ARI’s intervention with the most positive
responses– Not a first line treatment.• Yeast needs to be under control• Non-toxic metal need to be in adequate supply• Packed red cell metals test
Fighting the Battle
• Chelation agents used for ASD– DMSA– DMPS– CaNaEDTA
• Challenge testing• NIH trial abandoned
Fighting the Battle
• Treat Constipation– Prune Juice– Magnesium Citrate– Milk of Magnesia– Vitamin C 1000 mg a day– A tablespoon of Olive Oil – Miralax
Fighting the Battle
• Treat insomnia– Epsom salts baths– Melatonin– Acid reflux medicine– Treat allergies
The Strategy Synopsis
• The Three “R”s – Remove
– Replenish
– Repair
Strategy Synopsis
• Remove What Harms– Sugar– Junk Food– Gluten– Casein– Toxins in water and food– Toxins in the home– Allergens
Strategy Synopsis
• Replenish what is missing– Use whole organic foods– Use digestive enzymes– Use probiotics– Use a good multivitamin• No gluten, casein, • High in B vitamins
– Use minerals-Zinc, Magnesium
Strategy Synopsis
• Repair/Restore– Treat the constipation– Treat Dysbiosis with herbals• Curcumin• Olive leaf extract• Oil of oregano
– Antihistamines (if necessary)– Anti-reflux medications (if necessary)– Adrenal support– Specific Carbohydrate Diet
Basic Program
• GF/CF/SF diet• Multivitamin and minerals formulated for ASD• Add Probiotic• Digestive enzymes (preferably with DPP-IV activity)• Treat constipation• Treat insomnia
