You run in a city where the short blocks on north-south streets are 0.1 mile long. The long blocks on east- west streets are 0.15 mile long. You will run 2 long blocks east, a number of short blocks south, 2 long blocks west, then back to your starting point. You want to run 2 miles. How many short blocks should you run? Answer: 14 Meaning: You need to run 14 short blocks along with the 4 long blocks in order to run 2 miles. Around the World Word Problems Pathway to Critical Thinking You are making cupcakes for a bake sale and need to make enough cupcakes to fill 24 boxes of 6 muffins each. How many dozens do you need to make? The cellular phone plan you signed up for gives you 400 minutes a month for $35 and charges $.15 for each additional minute over 400 minutes. How many minutes can you talk on the phone each month and stay within a budget of $45? You are responsible for buying supplies for an upcoming camping trip. You can buy packages of 32 water bottles for $3.95. You need to buy enough water so that each person can have 3 bottles per day for the next 5 days. There are 23 people going on the trip. How many packages do you need? What is the total cost? You want to be able to split the cost between all of the campers, what are some factors you should consider before announcing your plan? The highest speed reached in the 1980s by a solar powered vehicle was miles per hour (mph). This record was set by a car called the Sunraycer on June 24, 1988 in Mesa, Arizona. How far could the Sunraycer travel in 2.5 hours at this speed? In 2011 another record speed was recorded at kilometers per hour. How much faster (in mph) was this speed than the 1988 record mentioned above? Round your answer to the nearest hundredth. Can you think of any reason(s) why Arizona might have been an advantageous state for the testing of the Sunraycer? The local painters union received an unusual and urgent request to paint 2 houses in 4 hours. If each painter can paint one house in 10 hours, how many painters will it take to accommodate this request? A furniture salesman earns a base salary of $14,000 per year. The salesman also receives a 7% commission on his sales. His total sales exceeded $500,000 for the year, as a reward he received a bonus of $5000 in December. Last year the salesman reported an income of $55,771 to the IRS. What were his total sales? A moving company weighs 25 boxes you have packed that contain either books or clothes and says the total weight is 414 pounds. You know that a box of books weighs 30 pounds and a box of clothes weighs 6 pounds. How many boxes of books and how many boxes of clothes did you pack?
