President’s Message

When I took office as your 2017 President, many

people have asked me what I hoped to accom-

plish this year. I can sum it up in one word: val-

ue. The Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn has

been a chamber member for over a decade and

I’ve learned three things during that time about

how to receive the best value for our member-

ship.

First, you’ll want to show up. Simply joining the chamber is great, but if

you want to get more referrals from other chamber members, you have

to be in front of them. They need to know who you are. Chamber

events like the afterhours, the luncheons, the ribbon cuttings, the golf

outing and the Lunch-and-Learns are great ways to meet other business

professionals.

Second, you’ll want to get involved. Showing up is important and that

gets people to know who you are and what business you represent.

But, why stop there? If you join just one of our many chamber commit-

tees, you’ll have an opportunity to engage people at a deeper level. A

great first committee to get involved with is our Shop Small Saturday

committee or our Membership Directory committee.

Finally, don’t expect the magic to happen overnight. Business profes-

sionals don’t attend luncheons to make sales to each other. We attend

the luncheons as part of the relationship building process. I might run

into someone a week after the luncheon who says, “I could use profes-

sional carpet cleaner for my business, do you know anyone?” I’m going

to say, “Yes, as a matter of fact, I just had lunch with Orville last week.

Expert Carpet Cleaning is his business. Give him a call.”

Our chamber sets up the opportunities to help you network and build

the relationships you need to see your business grow. Put in the time

and you won’t be disappointed with the results.

Your Chamber at a Glance

Business to Business About 2 weeks ago on a Saturday night we had 2 of our roof heaters go out at the Oak Lawn VFW. It was 55 degrees in our banquet hall and we had a party booked that night. Joe Stachon, our quartermaster, called around 15 different heating and air conditioning places around the Oak Lawn area using a Google search. Every one of them said they couldn't get out until Monday. Joe then grabbed the Chamber directory that was on his desk and called Chicagoland Heating and Air Con-ditioning who is in the book as a Chamber Member. They came out within the hour and had us up and running before the party started. They then ordered parts and had a perma-nent fix in place by the end of the week. I just wanted to pass this note along to say that we are grateful to Chicagoland Heating and Air Conditioning for helping out the Oak Lawn VFW. We are proud members of the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce.

If you had a good experience with another chamber member tell us your story so we can let everyone know!
