printartworkCross Stitch's Spring/Summer 16 collection consists of a combination of sophisticated visual references ranging from Chinoiseries, Victorian panels to Sicilian Majolica's, with a streamlined, modern approach. Every print is treated like an artwork, with joie de vivre behind every design, which is important mainly because they communicate subdued elegance and soigné ease before they betray a sense of whimsy. The palette is all muted beiges, slate grays, mauves, and spicy mustards—sometimes mixed together giving nearly every piece some sort of special detail. Rife with all sorts of embellishment—from monotones to intricate floral designs and boldly colored embroidery, it's about how you put them together.Cross Stitch stays true to its customer: a high-powered woman who has to look sharp from sunup until way past sundown, and rarely has time for wardrobe change.

Janat Sohail Aziz is a 22 year old musician who debuted her career using the Nescafe Basement plat-form. She is currently enrolled in

her fourth year of Bachelors in Architecture at the National College of Arts. She is a com-poser, a singer and a musician who plays the guitar, the ukulele and the keyboard. A woman of many talents, Janat also creates comics called ‘Jay’s Comics’ that have been posted publicly on her Facebook profile.

Expressing herself through varying me-diums of art has been of paramount impor-tance to her which is how she found her love for music.

“I personally believe that music isn't just about hitting the right notes or creating something that will last. It's about strip-ping yourself of your most valuable emo-tions and lending them to those listening. It should communicate a story that feels like home.”

After almost seven years of writing, exploring the instruments and an infinite stack of compositions, Janat says that she is now confident enough to further pursue music as a career. She finds inspiration in

little things, the most important being her journey as an individual. Being socially in-expressive, she has always found music to delicately act as a tool for her to communi-cate.

Janat says that she is influenced by art-ists such as Simon and Garfunkel, Pink Floyd and Dave Matthews Band, who have helped her respect music. Deriving inspira-tion from Indie Folk music and brilliant un-derground artists like The Paper Kites has encouraged her to explore new horizons. Today, she is not only driven to learn more but exceptionally confident about pursing this line of work.

Speaking about her participation in the Nescafe Basement Season 4, Janat said, “It has acted as a positive platform to begin my journey with. Performing as a part of Pakistan’s first all-female ensemble, I’ve received incredible amount of support and encouragement from all around the world and especially, by John Newman himself. This has surely uplifted my spirits and con-tinues to give me hope for a progressive fu-ture for the women of Pakistan!”

Despite having only one face, I have an impressive foundation collection (cue my mother’s eye-roll) that will probably keep growing, given my love for makeup

(and those are my credit card’s cries, you hear). Flawless skin is non-negotiable in my opinion and if you have your skin makeup down pat, half your work is done. Luckily the quest for the perfect foundation has allowed me to do all the work for you guys and rigorously road-test all of these babies. I included base products from across the board so there’s something here to suit every skin type.

The Makeup

EditAce Of Base

Foundations you will be reaching for time and time again!

Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation Suitable for all skin types

This is a foundation that should be in every makeup stash; it’s just that good. It deserves a whole page

dedicated to it, but I’ll try to keep it short, if words don’t fail me, then this is all you get…I kid, I kid. I bought this foundation after hearing plenty of makeup mavens wax-lyrical about it and it hasn’t disappointed since day one. I reserve it for special occasions and where flash-photography is a probability so in Pakistan this gets a fair bit of use. It doesn’t have SPF in it so you don’t have to worry about that dreaded white cast in flash photography you get from foundations with SPF. Armani has perfected the science behind the soft-focus and imperfection-blurring effect that you seek in every foundation and Luminous Silk does just that which is probably why it photographs beautifully (making skin look hella good). It gives that lusted-after dewy/almost-satin (but not oily) finish with a sheer coverage that can be built up to a medium depending on how much you slap on. If you have oily skin I would suggest using a mattifying primer underneath and to set it with a face powder. It’s a bit on the pricey side which is why you won’t see me wear this everyday, but it’s worth every penny. The foundation is housed in a glass jar with a runny liquid consistency which may not be ideal for travel but if you have a small container handy, decant some in that and be on your way. It’s by far Armani’s best-selling product and wins beauty awards year after year. Simply put, you need to get your hands on this.

l’Oreal Paris Infallible 24hour-Matte FoundationSuitable for oily skin

This drugstore offering by L’Oreal is not your average matte foundation. I occasionally get a shiny T-zone but other than that am a tad dry and usually pick products that give a dewy finish. Recently though, that dewy finish was erring on

the side of oily—shiny in a hot country? A sheeny, sweaty struggle we all know too well. That’s where this one comes in. This foundation is unlike traditional matte formulas; it is not cakey, it doesn’t sit heavy on the skin like its high-end counterparts and doesn’t look flat on the skin either. Sounds pretty good, huh? Well, it is. The formula gives a medium coverage, looks natural on the skin and while I won’t say it can last 24 hours like the tube claims (I haven’t worn makeup for that long neither would I advise it) it has decent longevity too. I reckon it will be a firm favourite for a lot of you, if it’s not already.

If you find that the Infallible foundation isn’t matte enough for your oily skin then another contender is the MAC Pro-Longwear Foundation that offers a semi-matte finish with a medium to full coverage. Like the name suggests, this foundation has excellent lasting power and you can get away with wearing this for a solid 12 hours. It has a liquid consistency that sets quickly on the face so you have to work fast with it and blend it in well or it will just sit on top of your skin. Pro-Longwear is well loved by brides because once on the face, it doesn’t budge, even through an especially teary rukhsati.

Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum Suitable for mature skin

This foundation comes highly recommended from my mum who said over the phone “Minahil you have to

try this in maybe 5 years time when you’re going to need it. It’s amazing!” Thanks mum! Anyway she tells me the foundation comes with skincare benefits because it smoothes out any fine lines she has, leaving a lovely semi-matte finish while applying like a dream. It has SPF 30 in it so offers decent sun-protection too. And because it includes moisturising ingredients it makes the skin look natural and radiant. It’s a sure winner for the mature skins.

Bourjois Healthy Mix SerumSuitable for dry skin

This was the first foundation I bought and I haven’t looked back since. Don’t let the drugstore price fool you, Bourjois is the sister-brand of Chanel so in terms of quality it delivers just like Chanel does. It applies flawlessly and offers a

sheer coverage that can be built up to a medium, again depending on how much you apply. You can set it with a face powder because that initial glow does turn to shine as the day goes on. In terms of longevity, you can get away with wearing it for a solid 6 hours before a touch-up. This makes the cut every time!

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Foundation Suitable for very dry skin

If you have parched, alligator skin and feel your skin drinks up every foundation you apply leaving you looking dry and flakey then this Creme Smooth Foundation is one to try. It has a thick, hydrating cream formula

that feels really moisturising on the skin and leaves your skin looking very dewy. I only take this out in harsh winters when the cold winds suck out all the moisture from the skin. It comes in a sturdy glass jar and its thick formula won’t be spilling out anytime soon if you want to take it with you on your travels!

MUFE Ultra HD Liquid & Invisible Cover Stick Honourable mention

I’ve not had these two foundations for very long but for the short time I have been using them, I’ve been nothing less than blown away. I’ll need multiple applications to determine whether these get

holy grail status and replace my Luminous Silk but from what I can see so far, these are ahh-mazing. The new Ultra HD formula will give you medium to full coverage in just one to one and a half pumps and smoothes out any pores, imperfections and it’s undetectable on the skin—I reckon the Ultra HD part has something to do with that! It can be sheered out and gives a semi-matte, natural look to the skin. The Invisible Cover stick provides a fuller coverage and would be ideal for bridal makeup or anyone who wants more coverage without looking like tonnes of makeup has been applied on the skin. The Ultra HD formula is specifically designed for TV/film and it’s invisible under the latest 4k lens. What sets the MUFE Ultra HD foundations apart (besides that imperceptibility under a 4k lens) is that it comes in 40 shades and undertones so there is a shade out there for every one of us. Now that I’ve told you all about the products you need to try, I’m off to play with some glitter, till next time Weekenders!

Jazz, flowers and food!Jazz, flowers and food!Zainab Tariq

Have you ever been to a Bistro that walks you into a boutique Florist, that di-rects you to an open space for fine dining with a long sharing table? Wait, add live jazz to it too? No? I hadn’t either.

La Menagere was an unexpected yet pleasant surprise. Located in the down-town of Florence, the space has a reconstructed industrial interior, grey walls, big windows, sky light, and beautiful flower bouquets. A live station for an inspiring florist, Artemisia, is set right in the middle of the space, a chest of drawers decorated with the widest selection of rare flowers, Orchids dangling from the ceiling, greens in artistic vases and a colorful collection of plants.

The jazz in the background and the scents of fresh flowers are just the begin-ning. When you ask for the menu, you’re spoilt for choice; a seasonal selection of gourmet food, cooked and prepared by young professionals. They have slow cooked Beef from heaven, Gnocchi fit for Italian royalty, and Seafood options good enough to make you quit meat. I cant explain the combination of flavors in words, but the contrast, combination, and textures were just Perfect. The servers are beautiful Italians, who speak great English and present in the most wonderful way. The experience is enriching like no other!

Make sure you ask them for the month’s calendar, if you’re in town, you wouldn’t want to miss their events. The vibe is just right for a beautiful night out in the prettiest city of Europe.

Q: What is the collection all about? The collection is Spring/Summer Lawn Collection (Volume 1). It includes 8 designs that have been printed on the best quality of fabric and have undergone strict quality control procedures. The designs are based on lighter color tones that people like to wear during the summer season. The designs also have intricate embroidery patterns that are highly popular.

Q: What did you have in mind when you selected the theme of the collection?

The overall theme of the collection is inspired by flowers - considering that it is being launched for the spring/summer season.

Q: What we have seen for now is Volume 1. How many more volumes is Gulaal coming up with?Gulaal will be coming up with 2 or 3 collections for lawn, before moving into the other fabric options as the year goes ahead, and finally concluding with the winter collection.

Q: How diverse is the collection?

The collection is really diverse, and has been produced after a very long thought process amongst everyone involved. The collection features intricate embroidery patterns inspired by Islamic architecture.

Q: Any special piece that you think is a must-buy for your customers out there? Venetian Rose (item code GL07) is my favorite piece from the entire collection. We spent considerable time sampling for this particular outfit since it has extremely intricate cross-stitch embroidery that takes a very long time.

It’s all about Gulaal Lawn
