I clicked on the “evangelism” tab and found a host of “Vestry Papers” on evangelism with lots of interesting ideas. One of the “papers” was by Lindsay Hardin Freeman who writes: There are a few myths floating around about small congregations: they reflect the demise of the Church; they are poor; they are trouble- some; and they are a minority in the Episcopal Church[this] is not the case. Whether large or small, stability and growth is achieved by reaching the hearts and souls of each person through one-on-one work, small groups, good preaching or outreach. Here’s the key for growthgrowing congregations are most likely to strongly agree that “they have a clear mis- sion and purpose, are a force for positive change in their communities, and are spiritually vital and alive.” I invite you to log-on to the Episcopal Church Foundation of Vital Practices and begin looking for ideas that fit the Church of the Covenant. It may be as simple as our Gospel lesson on Jan- uary 25, “And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And imme- diately they left their nets and followed him.” (Mark 1:17-18). During Bishop Wolfe’s Visitation he met with our Vestry and expressed his concern about meager attendance figures (in virtually every congregation) with an appeal that we as a congregation begin to find ways to reverse this trend. He invited our Vestry to begin a study on church growth and suggested a website called the Episcopal Church Foundation of Vi- tal Practices for Leading Congregations (http:// www.ecfvp.org/). I have been trolling through this website and have found a host of articles that are testimo- nials of best practices Episcopal Churches

NOTES FROM FR. DAVID

FEBRUARY 2015

have found helpful from “administration” to “youth.”

In case you are wondering, “evangelism” is one of the tabs to choose from. I clicked on the “evangelism” tab and found a host of “Vestry Papers” on evangelism with lots of interesting ideas. One of the “papers” was by Lindsay Hardin Freeman who writes:

There are a few myths floating around about small congregations: they reflect the demise of the Church; they are poor; they are trouble-some; and they are a minority in the Episcopal Church[this] is not the case. Whether large or small, stability and growth is achieved by reaching the hearts and souls of each person — through one-on-one work, small groups, good preaching or outreach. Here’s the key for growthgrowing congregations are most likely to strongly agree that “they have a clear mis-sion and purpose, are a force for positive change in their communities, and are spiritually vital and alive.”

I invite you to log-on to the Episcopal Church Foundation of Vital Practices and begin looking for ideas that fit the Church of the Covenant. It may be as simple as our Gospel lesson on Jan-uary 25, “And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And imme-diately they left their nets and followed him.” (Mark 1:17-18).

During Bishop Wolfe’s Visitation he met with our Vestry and expressed his concern about meager attendance figures (in virtually every congregation) with an appeal that we as a congregation begin to find ways to reverse this trend. He invited our Vestry to begin a study on church growth and suggested a website called the Episcopal Church Foundation of Vi-tal Practices for Leading Congregations (http://www.ecfvp.org/).
