Real Estate Corner With Sandy Goetz, Realtor ®

Fight Inflation: Buy a Home

Some economic analysts say that the possibility that the economy will go into overdrive and inflation will skyrocket is a much more frightening possibility than the current recession. One inflation hedge nearly all of them point to is real estate. Owning it outright is the best scenario, but if that’s not possible, a low-rate, 30-year fixed mortgage is the next best thing. As inflation drives up salaries, mortgage payments will stay the same, analysts point out. “Linda amazes me!” Terry Jones, Middle School Principal exclaims. “She has taken on this gigantic fundraising event and it’s just incredible how smoothly everything went. She has been planning all of the numerous details for close to six months. We couldn’t do that without her!” Seven years ago, when her son Trent was in Kindergarten, Linda began helping out at Dansville Elementary. She started a program called “Santa’s Secret Shop”. It is a shop set-up for the children to shop for their Mom’s, Dad’s and loved ones for the holidays. They also implemented “Santa Bucks” to be sure all children were able to buy items, whether they had money available or not. They have also made it an opportunity for the eighth graders to help some of the younger children shop. The program has continued each year. Linda has been married to her husband, Joel for 17 years this October. Although his job keeps him on the road quite a bit, Linda makes the most of it by spending time with her three boys, Trent, Michael and Trevor. She loves her flowerbeds and many crafts including card making and decorating bowling balls. Although Linda was born and raised in Brownsville, MI., her parents live in Kentucky so they make sure to spend a week there each summer. “My Mom is great” Linda said. She has eight kids and was very involved in our schools and the community. She taught me the importance of giving back and being involved.” As much as she enjoys being a sub in the school kitchen or library, Linda says there is still nothing better than summer. It’s the amount of time she is able to spend with her family, and her flowers that pleases her most. A positive influence around children; a smiling face around town; the extra helping hands that every school wishes they could have; cute hats to match each outfit that make the rest of us smile…that is Linda McGrath…no matter what else you call her. Thank you Linda, for all you do for all of us! If you know of someone deserving of a Forgotten “Thank You”, please email me at: [email protected] or call The Weekly Pride toll-free at 888-318-1766.

ridges north of Chelsea and Dexter. The landscape there provides for a hike that can be as challenging as you like due to the changes in elevation or you can choose to follow the lakes at a lower level. As we walked on through the afternoon, we were amazed by the array of wildflowers and other flora along the way. Those of us who live in the country are accustomed to wildlife. But living in an agricultural area, sometimes it’s easy to forget how beautiful nature can be when left to its own design. The Potawatomi Trail provides a rustic walking experience with a few improvements such as steps in the steeper sections, water pumps, outhouses and picnic areas with fire pits. All in all, it is a wonderful and affordable way to spend a great day with your family.

Troop 168 takes on New York!

Stockbridge Cadette Girl Scout Troop 168 traveled to New York City over Spring Break. The girls had planned this trip for a year. Selling cookies, nuts, and spaghetti fundraisers help go toward each girl's expenses. They stayed at the Edison Hotel in Time’s Square. During their trip they visited; Madame Tussauds wax museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, M&M World, The Empire State Building, CBS Studio, Central Park, and much more. It was a very memorable trip! Who said that Girl Scout’s aren’t fun? “They are so wrong” saw the girls of Troop 168.

Woodworth Millage Club

More Mileage Club Miles for Woodworth!

Due to the rainy weather and Kindergarten Round-Up, our Woodworth Elementary Spring Mileage Club miles took a little tumble last week. Woodworth students were down about 600 miles from the previous week but still managed an impressive 1,230 miles despite the weather conditions. This gives us a three week total of 5, 094 miles (about 500 miles behind last year at this time). Ms. Kirby’s classroom again led the Kindergarteners, while the top five classrooms this week included: *Mrs. Dietz’ 1st graders with 92 miles! *Mrs. Gillespie’s 3rd graders with 94 miles! *Mrs. Meitz’ 4th graders completed 96 miles, while Runners-up in the school with 100 miles were Mrs. Shook’s 2nd grade children! *Leading the entire Woodworth Elementary for the third consecutive week and holding on to the Golden Shoe Award again were the fourth graders in Ms. Cargill’s class!!! We now have almost 80 students who have completed at least 20 miles (4 cards) in just three weeks and have already earned their Mileage Club Water Bottle plus had their picture taken for the Woodworth Wall of Fame!!! “We’re hoping the weather will be better this week,” Woodworth playground program director Jim Hanson stated. “We had a lot of disappointed kids last week when we had to stay inside a couple of times for recess.”

SMAA Tri Meet Track at Stockbridge

Student Writer - Alex Noffsinger The middle school track team entered last Wednesday’s meet with two goals, win and play hard. People say you should always set the bar high, but again Stockbridge found that the bar was just too high. In the field events, Jenny Spink from Stockbridge took first place in shot-put. Over in long jump, Lauren Allen took second. Some notable track events were Micah Ward taking 3rd in the 3200M, Mercedes Medina taking 1st in 55M hurdles with a time of 10.96, Kelsey Crockett placing 2nd in the 800M, Lindsey Poll taking 1st in the 100M dash, and Lindsey Poll placing 2nd in the 200M dash. Stockbridge took first in the 3200M relay with a time of 12:20.55. The good showing for Stockbridge wasn’t enough though as the team took 2nd with a score of 48 just edging out Morrice for the 2nd spot. The next day I interviewed Coach Thorburn. I asked him, “What event were you most pleased with.” Instead of answering some conventional track event he answered, “Shot- put and long jump, Jenny Spink and Lindsey Poll’s scores in their respect events were great.”

Stockbridge Boys Continue to Improve

Submitted by Coach Bumpus The boys Varsity Track Team had many personal victories last Friday night at the Stockbridge Invitational. But as a team they did not fare too well. Every athlete that participated in the meet ran, threw, jumped or vaulted their best. Leading the way for the panthers was freshman Scott Watson in the Pole vault with a height of 12’ and a 4th place finish. Next with a couple of 6th place finishes were Tim Good in the shot put with a throw of 42’11 ½” and J.D. Summers in the 400 M dash with a time of 52.8. With a 7th place finish in the high jump, Ian Bumpus with a height of 5’11”. Rounding off the scoring were the relay teams. In the 3200 M relay, with an 8th place finish was Tyler Grasustein, Kyle Losey, Ian Bumpus and Zack Platte with a time of 9:08.9 cutting off more than 20 seconds of their previous best. The 800 M relay consisting of Matt Klann, J.D. Summers, Chad Snyder and Dan Parks, an 8th place with a time of 1:39.2. The 1600 M relay team, Dan Parks, Scott Watson, Ian Bumpus and J.D. Summers also with an 8th place finish with a time of 3:51.9. The Panthers will be busy this week as they have 2 meets, Tuesday a SMAA Jamboree at Columbia Central with eight other teams and Friday, the Bath Jon Nugent Invitational with 9 other teams.

6th Grade Girls Have Rough Week

The sixth grade Lady Panthers had another rough week, as they took a loss against Haslett in a 4-1 decision. In the first half, Haslett scored 1, while goalie Shelby Hastings stopped 13 other attempts. Goaltender Jordan Brockway stopped 18 shots in the second half. In the second half, the Panthers' lone goal was by Hastings, as she was successful after a call against Haslett for hands. Stockbridge had 13 additional attempts at scoring, but was unsuccessful. The offense of Danny Sidebottom, Madyson Davis, Madelyn Armstrong, Karly Kruger, Alyssa Woods, Chloe Hypes, Hastings, and Brockway was not strong enough to get past the tough Haslett defense. The defensive team of Nicole Douglas, Audrey Twining, Jena Smith, Sidebottom, Davis, and Kruger couldn't keep the Haslett girls from scoring 3 additional goals in the second half. Smith finished the game as goalie, as coach Scott Clow attempted to team up offensive players Hastings and Brockway. The Panthers were unsuccessful in scoring any additional goals. The sixth grade Lady Panthers are 1-2 for the spring season. Their next game is Saturday, May 9, when they play against Tammy Gradowski's Stockbridge team at the Middle School at 9 a.m.

Stockbridge Ladies Banged Up Submitted by Coach Trapp

The Stockbridge Ladies track team had a strong performance Friday night at the Stockbridge Invitational even despite a few injuries. The ladies finished in 6th place out of 16 teams. Individual winners included Zoey Hohmann in the 400 m dash and 100m dash. Zoey took second in the 400 with a time of 60.9 seconds and first place in the 100 m dash with a time of 13.06 seconds. Jacque Fillmore earned a 5th place medal in the 2 mile with a time of 13 minutes and 4 seconds (13:04). The 4 x 800 meter relay team finished in third place earning a medal with their best time of the season of 10 minutes and 46 seconds (10:46). This team consisted of Nichole Chapman, Kristin Fillmore, Jacquie Fillmore, and Jasmine Holloway. The 4 x 400 meter relay team also finished in third place with at time of 4 minutes and 20 seconds (4:20) consisting of Jasmine Holloway, Storm Boyer, Whitney Williams, and Zoey Hohmann. The 4 x 200 meter relay team finished in fifth place with the team of Storm Boyer, Jasmine Holloway, Whitney Williams, and Zoey Hohmann. The relays continue to be the big part of our success. Even with two key relay members both out with injuries, our younger runners stepped in to take on the role at the big meet. We also have young hurdlers and throwers that keep getting better. The ladies track team will compete in two meets this week. On Tuesday at the SMAA Jamboree #2 at Columbia Central and Friday at the Bath Invite.

The Fountain of My Youth

Corinda Hackworth [email protected]

I think we all have times when we wish we were younger. Or at the very least appear younger. This week I had my chance. And it came in the form of an enormous, um, protuberance.

Friday I woke up completely oblivious to what had exploded all over my right cheek. I knew something was up, however, the very minute my four-year-old saw me in the morning. “Um, Mom,” she began, as she always did. “Um…ew!” she stopped suddenly. Her huge, blue eyes zeroed in on something on the side of my face. So unnerved was she, that she completely lost her train of thought. I noticed she was staring at the side of my face, so I cautiously reached a finger up to my cheek and began feeling around. It didn’t take me long to find it; a gargantuan zit. By lunchtime on Friday, it had progressed from a noticeable blemish to a goiter. When I turned my face to the side, I had a huge lump jutting from my profile. Suddenly I was sixteen again, completely and utterly

self-conscious about my appearance. I felt like everywhere I went people were staring at my imperfection. And not only staring but being completely grossed out by it. How could they not? I was sickened at the sight of it and it was on me! So, painfully aware of the incredible mark nestled on my cheek, I tried to carry on as if another life form hadn’t taken up existence on my face. And then, it happened. It was at that exact moment I turned psychic. I could hear my Stylist’s thoughts at the hair salon I regularly attend. “Are you really sure you want your hair away from your face?” she mused inwardly. “Because at this point I think a complete face covering would be more successful.” Ironically, I could hear the receptionist thinking pretty much the same thing. “Could I sign you up for a facial, too?” she thought as she made my next appointment. “You certainly could use it!” I left Jackson humiliated and a little paranoid. As the afternoon wore on my cheek began hurting. I mean, really hurting. It felt like someone had sucker-punched me. I tried to refrain from touching it, as it was enormous enough and the last thing I needed was an emergency operation to save what was left of my cheek. So, I put it out of my mind and tried to carry on with my day. My ignorance was short lived the minute my

two older kids got a good look at me. Whether they hadn’t noticed it before they left for school or it hadn’t fully blossomed yet, I don’t know. But they sure took notice of it when they got home. They, too, began talking to the protrusion, giving it all of their attention. When I asked them how their day was, the bump got the affirmation that it had indeed been a decent day. Humbled, I followed them outside and swallowed my reserve long enough to talk to my next door neighbor. We were deep in conversation when my other daughter apparently couldn’t stand the suspense any longer. She walked up and loudly demanded with more than a hint of disgust, “What is that on your face?” Thankfully, my neighbor pretended she didn’t hear. Although as anyone with kids knows, you cannot miss the forthright questioning of a six-year-old. And just like that, reality slammed back into me. Or rather, into my face. Even at dinner that night in Chelsea, I could hear the patrons moaning silently, “Come on, lady! Cover that thing up! People are trying to eat here!” Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton, a British politician and poet once said, “There is nothing so agonizing to the fine skin of vanity as the application of a rough truth.” So to that end, I’m hoping that as this article goes to press, my zit will be healed up and nothing will remain from the day the fountain of youth exploded all over my face.

Last weeks solutions at right.

PAGE 7 - THE WEEKLY PRIDE

The following is an editorial written by State Representative Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga). If you have questions about this commentary, please contact Rep. Byrum's office by calling (517) 373-0587. In light of the recent outbreak of H1N1, or the Swine Flu as it has been recently called, I want to stress the importance of keeping you and your family safe from an epidemic or catastrophic event. First things first: H1N1 is a combination of a few different flu strains, which scientists are still trying to figure out. As of now, it is thought to be made up of swine, avian and human strains. Second – it has not been reported that one cannot catch H1N1 by eating pork, only through contact with other infected people. Countries on the other side of the world who do not understand the spread of the virus are hurting their own economy by ordering the slaughter of all pigs in their borders. We have to make sure we do not make that same mistake. Pigs are central to our economy, and we can not afford to be misinformed. Eating pork is still okay (when cooked thoroughly of course) and it is still okay for

farmers to raise pigs. Most forms of the flu spread between people through coughing, sneezing, or if they touch something with the virus on it and then touching their nose or mouth or eyes. The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people can remain contagious for up to ten days, so it is important to

be careful even if you don't think you have the virus. There have been recommendations to prevent the spread of the virus among people, which include frequent washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers. The current flu vaccine is unlikely to provide protection against the new 2009 H1N1 strain; vaccines against the new strain are being developed and could be ready as early as June of this year. The best piece of advice to follow is the recommendation from our mothers to be sure to wash our hands after the use of restrooms, especially before scratching an itch in an eye or blowing our nose. Always seek medical advice if you feel overwhelmingly sick, and especially if your symptoms become increasingly worse as time moves on. Regardless, it is very important that you keep yourself safe and try to stay cautious of everything. Flu epidemics can be avoided when safety is practiced, and by playing our own parts, we can ensure this virus does not kill any one of our residents.
