The standard of the speeches was amazing, making the task for the adjudicators extremely difficult. I would like to congratulate Millissa (Yr 3), Oscar (Yr 4), Harry (Yr 5) and Will (Yr 6) who were the winners for their grades. These students will now progress to the regional finals, which will be held in the weeks to come. Thankyou to all the parents who came to the event to support the students. National Tree Day – the highs and the lows… Last Friday Miss Goder arranged a fabulous opportunity for our students to participate in National Tree Day – a highly worthwhile event. Weeks of planning was undertaken sourcing the correct plants, organising times for the students to come out with their classes to do the planting and engagement in classroom lessons. The day was a huge success and a beautiful native hedge was planted along the retaining wall near the G Block computer lab, adding to the ongoing improvement of our grounds and to the students’ understanding of environmental sustainability. Despite the planting only being completed just before 3pm, unbelievably and to everyone’s incredible disappointment, all of the plants that were planted by our children were stolen between 3.30 and 4.30pm. Needless to say, the police have been notified and if anyone has any information regarding the removal of these plants, please inform me in the school office so that the appropriate course of action can be followed. Athletics Carnival This Friday WWS will be hosting its first K-6 Athletics Carnival and Sports Day at Adcock Park, Gosford. This is a great whole school initiative and with great weather predicted, it promises to be an excellent day. As many parents have made requests for the purchase of the new sports shirts, the P&C has kindly agreed to open the uniform shop this Thursday between 8.30 and 9am so that keen students can look their best on Friday. A limited number of the new shirts will also be available on the day at the carnival. Pick up Procedures A reminder that all students being picked up before the end of the school day must be signed out of the school at the office in the company of their parent or carer. At no time are school staff in a position to escort students to the carpark or allow students to leave the school grounds to wait to be picked up. This is a safety requirement and part of our duty of care that is not negotiable. Your cooperation with this matter is greatly appreciated. Life Education – Healthy Harold This Term, The Life Education Program will visit WWS, including the return of Healthy Harold, the well-known character who for years has helped students right across NSW understand key concepts around health and positive decision making. Details and cost for participation in the visit will be sent home shortly. Congratulations Congratulations to our Pacific Island group who have done it yet again by performing brilliantly at the Narara Valley High School Today – well done! Thanks to Michelle and the team and Miss Goder for supervising the students. Library news Welcome to an exciting term in the library. We will be looking at some of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted Book of the Year books during library time. On Thursday in week 6 (30th August) we have a dramatic performance of the CBCA books in ‘Treasure Hunt’ where students will be able to view a live performance from a highly regarded performance group. Remember to keep working on your treasure chests, it is a family competition, so anybody may help with the entry. Entries to Mrs Silver by Friday week 4 (17th August) in the library. Start saving because in week 5 (Monday to Thursday) the library will be hosting our final Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair will be open from 8:30am before school, recess and until 3:30pm Monday to Thursday. I look forward to seeing you there! The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is still continuing so keep reading, you have until the Friday week 6 (31st of August) to complete and submit your list. Mrs Silver Book week competition: What’s Your Treasure? ‘Find your treasure!’ is the Book Week theme for 2018 and as part of our Book Week celebrations we will be holding a competition to show off your treasure. There are prizes to be won! If your child chooses to enter this competition the project is due by the end of Week 4 (17th August). Follow the steps below:

1. Create a 3D treasure chest.

2. Think of at least 3 of

your favourite stories that you have heard or read.

3. Then create a way to display the titles and

author’s names of your favourite books! They can be any shape, size, colour and made from whatever materials you like. Let your imagination go wild!!!!!!

4. Under each title, write why these books are your

favourite.

5. Attach these onto or into the treasure chest in a creative way, so they can be read by others.
