David’s Thoughts...

Hearing is done with the ears. Listening is done with the heart.

Having just finished the powerful sermon on the mount, Jesus is approached, quite unusually for the time, by a man with leprosy. He is man, no doubt, moved by the revolutionary words he just heard.

"Heal me," he asked. Jesus took compassion on the man and, affirming his own willingness, cleansed him of the rotting flesh and white ashen skin.

The commander of a hundred soldiers pleaded with Jesus to simply say the word and heal his servant who was lying par-alyzed and in pain. Jesus was amazed by the man's depth of faith and said the word.

A gentile woman with a demon-possessed daughter cried out to Jesus, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David!" But Jesus ignored her incessant pleas until his disciples pressed him for a response. After she begged for only the smallest of grace, his compassion shined through and his tone changed. "Madam, your faith is great!" he exclaimed and healed the Canaanite girl.

In each case, Jesus turns not only his ear to the pleading person, but freely opens his heart to the cry for help and in the process, hears a proclamation of faith that stirs his compassion. Last week, our parenting class practiced "active listening" skills. In this intentional process, several spouses heard their husband or wife speak like never before. Perhaps for the first time they were listening with their hearts and not just hearing with their ears. When we read scripture, participate in the fellowship of singing, take in a devotional thought or a sermon on a Sunday morning, are we simply letting the words land on our ears like rain falling on a window--drops which quickly run down and are gone? Or do we turn our hearts to the words of God like hot sand in a refreshing shower. When we do, we allow each drop to be soaked up and go deep, slowly turning our lives in a moist and fertile soil where the Spirit's seed germinates before bursting forth into new life. Choose your metaphor: Sheep and shepherd, children and father, slaves and redeemer. This is how God listens to us. This is how we should listen to Him.
