    By Deb Hagen-Foley

If you have been following this column in recent

weeks, I have been offering suggestions for ways

of finding time in your day to work on your goals. You may have completed a weekly log of your

time and learned that you are spending time on

not urgent/not important activities rather than

important activities that will move you closer to

your goals. Perhaps even after completing these

tracking exercises, you have found it difficult to

make enough time in your day to incorporate a

    new healthy activity.

Do you multitask? The term multitasking origi-

nated in the computer engineering area and as

more electronic devices are taking more of our

attention, the term and practice has been adopted

by humans, with less success. Multitasking is

used to describe the ability of a microprocessor to

    perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Similarly,

human multitasking refers to a human attemptingto complete two tasks at the same time. For

instance, a person might multitask by answering

the phone while reading e-mail. Do you think

multitasking helps you finish tasks more efficient-

    ly? Think again.

We know about the dangers of using a cell

phone while driving. Research and numerous

motor vehicle accidents have shown that cell

phone use, even using hands free devices, dis-

tracts the driver from what should be their pri-

mary focus driving! Cell phone use while driv-

ing is now illegal in many states, including

    Michigan.

Multitasking is really task-switching, as it is

not possible to give full attention to two tasks at

the same time. In actuality, when we think we are

multi-tasking, we are asking our brains to switch

from one activity to another and back again

    repeatedly. Task-switching, according to the

research, results in a loss of time as the brain

    identifies which task to process.

Multitasking has both short and long-term neg-

ative effects. In the moments while multitasking

is being attempted, each of the tasks may suffer

from a lack of attention and, overall, the tasks will

take more time than if they were completed

sequentially rather than simultaneously. If a per-

son is multitasking in an eff ort to acquire new

knowledge or skills, the results are even worse.

If you are able to learn while multitasking,

research on brain functioning finds that the learn-

ing is more specialized and difficult to retrieve

later. According to one researcher in the area of

multitasking, Russell Poldrack, of the University of

California, . . . humans are not built to work this

way. Were really built to focus. And when we sort

of force ourselves to multitask, were driving our-

selves to perhaps be less efficient in the long run

even though it sometimes feels like were being

    more efficient.

    It's not spring yet, but a mid-January warm-up brought

with it a bumper crop of potholes across Michigan. If you

spot a pothole on an I-, US- or M-route, you can report it to

the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT)

    Pothole Hotline.

Motorists in Michigan can report potholes on state high-

ways in three ways: calling the Pothole Hotline at 888-296-

4546; clicking the "Report a Pothole" link in the Spotlight

section at www.michigan.gov/mdot; or by calling your local

MDOT Transportation Service Center (TSC) or region

    office.

"The quicker we know about where potholes are forming,

the sooner we can get them patched," said State

Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Patching them

won't last, but will help get us through until warmer weather

    returns."

Potholes are most prevalent during freeze/thaw cycles,

when water penetrates the pavement surface and refreezes,

    pushing the pavement up.

    Vehicles then push the pave-

    ment back down, breaking it

    and starting a pothole.

    "Extended winters and

    aging pavements result in

    more potholes on Michigan

    roads, and increased costs to

    keeping our roads in good

    shape," Steudle said.

Those reporting pothole locations are asked to provide the

route name (M, I or US designation), the county, the nearest

community, and the closest cross street or interchange.

Potholes on non-state roads should be reported to local road

commissions since MDOT does not have jurisdiction over

roads that are not part of the state system.

He related, She is someone who has

devoted the past 40 years to helping people,

especially children, in our Countya goal

that mirrors the Fraternal Order of Polices

goals. Judy, you need to know that when wewere gathering information about you sever-

al people told us that your were a woman

that has always tried to help others, but do

so in a way that kept you out of the limelight.

Well I have news for you; people know you,

people see what you are doing, know the

need, and appreciate your serv ice to others.

Upon receiving the Citizen of the Year

award, Kucharek beamed, You have blown

me away! Receiving this award is a real

shocker, and I greatly appreciate it.

The eldest of twelve children, a primary

focus of Judys ongoing volunteer efforts over

the years has been helping children achieveconfidence and believe in themselves

    through opportunities, recognition and

    encouragement.

Young people are so impressionable, she

related during last Tuesdays ceremony. I

will go to bat for a child any day of the week.

I want to present a challenge to those here

tonight to offer an encouraging smile or pat

on the back to a child they know. She relat-

ed that just a simple act of kindness and

    recognition can make a huge

    difference in childrens lives.

    Judy Kuchareks volunteer

    activities, many of which her

    husband, Ray, joins at her

    side, reach far and wide

    across Otsego County pro-

    grams, organizations and

    events. Those include ten

    years with the Otsego

    County Community Giving

Program and the Toys for Tots and Coats forKids holiday programs, the creation of over

400 blankets for children at the former

Friendship Housing Center, 40 years as an

Otsego County Fair volunteer and service as

past president of the Fair Board, ten years as

    a 4H pro-

Judy and her husband Ray have been mar-

    ried for 47 years and have three children;

daughters Gail and Lynn and son, Tung.

They reside in the Gaylord area and plan to

continue their volunteer efforts in the com-

Venus & Blue Jeans resale shop in Gaylord,

launched by Cheryl Scheer in October of

2009, is sort of a shabby chic boutique,

focusing on consignment sales of upscale

    designer/brand name clothing items, from

just a few years old to recently off the rack,

as well as accessories and home dcor items.

Displayed in a comfortable, easy to browse

showroom on the Westside of Gaylords

    downtown business district.

We have a wonderful assortment items

available, states Cheryl Scheer. We alsohave a wide variety of reasonably priced

    name-brand clothing and accessories, often

    including Lucky brand, Silver jeans,

    American Eagle, Abercrombie, Hollister and

Ralph Lauren. We encourage people to bring

in their designer and name brand items and

    consign them.

The selections at Venus & Blue Jeans also

include a wonderful collection of accessories

such as purses, shoes and jewelry, as well as

a wide selection of home furnishings, jewelry

    and antiques.

The consignment arrangement at Venus &

    Blue Jeans is refreshingly straightforward,

offering a 60/40 split between the shop a nd

the consigner. Clothing items must be no

more than a few years old, clean, free of

stains and in ready for the rack conditions.

Clothing is kept for 60 days, and is marked

down after 30 and 45 days. All consignment

requests must be made by app ointment
