Dear ReadersWell I must say we have seen in the new month witha fantastic few days – weather-wise. Goodbye toFebruary and the daily dilemma of not knowing whatto wear to go out. This week we have seen tempera-tures in the middle 20's across the coast, with loadsof sunshine. The forecast is a little down, but hey it'sMarch and we know that spring is here, with warmermonths around the corner.

March is a month of celebrations for the Spanish andthe Irish – and because the Brits love a party, we canall join in. For the Valencian region, the Spanish cel-ebrate "Fallas" from the 15th to the 19th. Expectmany street parties and parades with giant statues,which normally characterise local dignitaries.

St Patrick's Day (the 17th) falls on a Tuesday and isalso a very popular affair. Brits flock to Benidorm andthe area is given over to more street events, with vis-itors enjoying a day of fancy dress partying – mostlyin “green”.

Father's Day in Spain is celebrated on the 19th (thelast day of the “Fallas”). This is a public holiday andthe giant statues are ceremoniously set on fire tomark the end of the fiesta. For the British living here,Mother’s Day in the UK is on the 15th of March, soenjoy the day, but don’t forget to send flowers andcards back home in plenty of time...

For sports lovers, the Cheltenham Festival starts onthe 10th March (until the 13th) followed by anotherweekend of fantastic 6 Nations rugby. With lastyear’s winners, Ireland, leading the field, but withWales to face next (who are in joint second placewith England), it’s still anyone's title… with all to playfor.

Spain is the biggest exporter of wine inthe world, but why are exports mainlyin bulk, rather than bottled?Spain is a relative newcomer on the inter-national circuit, compared to the Frenchand Italians, yet it has beaten records tobecome the biggest wine exporter in theworld.According to data published on February23rd by Spanish wine market observatory(Obervatorio Español de los Mercadosdel Vino – OEM) Spanish wine exportsreached 22.8 million hectoliters in 2014, a

22.3 percent rise on 2013.But while the volume ofsales has increased, prof-its have fallen 2.2 percentsince 2013. According to the lat-est data, France is now thebiggest buyer of Spanishwines; guzzling 5.8 million hec-toliters in 2014, a 40 percentrise on the previous year, fol-lowed by Germany, Portugal andRussia.But if Spain is the biggest exporter of wine

in the world, why have profits fallen? Theanswer may lie in the fact that the

majority of wine export-ed from Spain, 55 per-

cent, is sold in bulk, i.e.not bottled.

Spain, home to the biggest vine-yards in the world, has alwayssold in bulk to its neighbours but

profits are falling - the latest fig-ures reveal that in 2014 the average

price was 40 cents per litre, compared to60 cents the year before.

It is often more economic for France toexport wine in bulk from Spain and thenlabel it, rather than growing the grapesand making the wine themselves. pany she works only sells bottled winewith declared Spanish origin.

BENISSA’S KYLE SMITHTAKES FOURTH IN OZ

The 23 year old British driver linked tothe town of Benissa for many years,Kyle Smith, was born in Huddersfieldand moved to Spain when he was 6. Hewas fourth in the first race of the 2015Supersport World Championship sea-son. He missed out on a podium finishby 0.032s at Australia’s Phillip IslandGrand Prix Circuit.Jules Cluzel won the race. Smithwas in control during the first partof the race and was fighting to beon the podium all the time but hehad to be careful to preserve therear tire on his Honda CBR600RRwhile fighting for a third placeagainst the driver Gino Rea, whocould only pass him at the finishingline.Kyle explained to the press: “I hada very good start and two riderspassed me while I was preserving

my rear tire. Then they slightly movedaway due to the better conditions of theirtires and it was a very tight finish with Ginohitting my bike but I will make sure it doesnot happen in following races”.Next race will be on 22nd March at theChang International Circuit in Buriram,Thailand.

VILLA ROMANA RECEIVES650 VISITORS IN FEBRUARYThe outdoor ‘Villa Romana’ in Albirhad 650 visitors during February. It isa pioneer museum which uses 3Dtechnology and has become one ofthe most visited places in the cam-paign: ‘We love Sundays Albir’.

The site (which has been dated betweenIV and VII A.D.) had been forgotten forover 25 years, but the museum ‘VillaRomana’ opened in 2011 after renewedarchaeological works.

The museum’s new interactive guide isan iPad app which allows the “virtual”visualization of the thermal baths thatwere once there.

Visiting times are Tuesdays to Fridaysfrom 10AM-1PM, and Saturdays,Sundays and red days, from 10AM-2PM.

ALBIR CHURCH OF ENGLANDCONGREGATION CURRY FOR CASH !

On Wednesday 25th February nineteenmembers and friends sat down for a 4course curry meal at the home of Geoff &Elaine Mitchell.

This was a fun fundraisingevent and raised €220 forChaplaincy funds. Amusinganecdotes were found ineveryone serviette and readout during the eveningwhich caused some hilarity.

The Albir Church serviceis at 9.45 every Sundaymorning, using theNorwegian SeafarersChurch premises on

Carrer Mart, Albir. Theyare one of seven church-es in the chaplaincy.

The ‘Mostra de Teatre’ of Alfaz del Pi will bring the 3Dtechnology to the ‘Casa de la Cultura’ this month. Theevent will include a musical for all ages: ‘SherlockHolmes y el cuadro magico’ (Sherlock Holmes and themagic box), in which this technology is the main char-acter.

The 13th edition of the ‘Mostra de Teatre’ takes placefrom the 9th to 15th March, and during the event EmilioGutierrez Caba, one of the greats of Spanish theatre,will be awarded the ‘Pi d’Honor’.

Another surprise will be the premiere of the newly cre-ated company ‘Arabi Teatre’ formed by young resi-dents, most of them students from Alfaz del Pi highschool.

€2,600 TO SUPPORTBREAST CANCER VICTIMS

The fourth ‘FestivalInternacional de Coros’of Alfaz del Pi has suc-cessfully raised €2,600thanks to two charityconcerts, with perform-ances by 250 singersand 60 musicians from20 different nationali-ties. The money raisedwill be given to ‘AnemonaMarina Baixa’, a self-helpgroup for women withbreast cancer.Jose Antonio Rubio, thefestival’s musical director,said: “A very specialatmosphere was createdduring the weekend, witha great audience asking

for more, and over 300singers and musiciansfrom different cities andcultures coming togetherto support those affectedby breast cancer”.During the ‘CoralPolifonica L’Alfas Canta’,the Mayor of Alfaz de Pi,Vicente Arques, wasnamed honorary presidentand honorary memberaccolade went to PascualAlbiñana, one of the mostappreciated singers in thechoir. This charity eventwas also supported by theAlfaz del Pi Culture andSocial WelfareDepartments.

The formerChancellor of theUniversity ofAlicante, AndresPedroza (aProfessor of Applied

Economics) hasbeen the main insti-gator for this meet-ing between Arques,and Orihuela, aProfessor ofMathematics.

The Town Hall ofAlfaz del Pi is look-ing forward to work-ing with MurciaUniversity – in orderto face the chal-lenges and newtechnologies that arearound us and theconstant need tostudy and recycle.

3D ARRIVES TO THE‘MOSTRA DE TEATRE’


LIGHTING UPGRADESThe Provincial Government ofAlicante has launched anExtraordinary InfrastructureInvestment Plan which will beapplied in Altea and La Nucia.These two towns are planning tosave energy by updating publiclightning and air conditioning.

In Altea, the Town Hall will use itssubsidy of around €142,000 toimprove the Town Hall and the ‘Casade Cultura’ lightning systems, byreplacing them with LED lights andwill also change the air conditioningsystem within the ‘Casa de Cultura’.The Mayor of Altea, Miguel Ortiz,explained that with this investmentAltea will be one of the most commit-

ted towns – with energy savings andzero emissions.

The Town Hall in La Nucia will usethe subsidy of almost €240,000 toinstall new public lights. A total of1,113 street-lights in 11urbanizat ions(La Torre, ArcosEste, El Valle,P a t r a x ,E n t r e p i n o s ,M o n t e b e l l o ,B a r r a n c oHondo, LaVenta del Aire,Convent de lesM o n g e s ,

TRANSPARENCY The Town Hall of Alteahas recently introducedan application on itswebsite, in order to showthe citizens what theirtax payments are usedfor. It is a ‘Calculadora deImpuestos’ (TaxesCalculator) which ranksAltea as the first town inthe Valencian Region, andone of the first in Spainoffering this service.A banner in Altea’s website(www.altea.es) links to theapp, which shows how themoney is distributed withinthe budgets. It considersthe yearly fees paid in IBItaxes, water payments,

garbage taxes and IVTMtaxes.The aim is to let all resi-dents know the amount oftax that is designated toSocial Services, LocalPolice, Urban Planning,Infrastructures, Education,Culture, Sports, etc., in theclearest and easiest waywith just one click of theirmouse.

This Tax Calculator is alsodesigned to be usedthrough mobile devices,like mobile phones ortablets by just visiting thelink (without installing anyapp).


The veterinaries from the Recovery Area at ValenciaOceanografic and Mundomar tried for over an hourto save an adult female common dolphin, which wasfound last Sunday caught in an illegal ‘long-line’ atPeacock Island in Benidorm. However the poor con-dition of the animal made it impossible, and the dol-phin died just after 3 pm.The beautiful animal was found at 10 am by a family in aboat, who quickly alert-ed a group of diversfrom Alicante’s ClubGised. Jose Luis Crespo, veteri-nary from Oceanografic,explained that “commonand bottlenose dolphinsnormally swim in deep waterso when they come close tothe coast line they are usu-ally ill and this is why mostof them end up dying. Thepercentage of marine mam-mals which are able torecover is only 1%, whereaswith turtles (for example) itis around 90%”. He and

Carlos Barros, vet fromMundomar, explained thatit is not normal for a dol-phin to steal food from along-line, which confirmsthat the animal wasalready ill before beingcaught.

6 ARRESTED FORHOLIDAY SCAM

In June 2014, the Police Station inBenidorm started an investigation afterseveral people reported they had beenscammed while renting a holiday apart-ment through a website. They paid areservation fee of €800 and once theyarrived at the apartment address, theyfound it did not exist.

The police tracked the money to severalbank accounts in Castellon, and fourEcuadorian and Colombian people,between 19 and 27 years old, were

arrested. They were being used as‘mules’, receiving the money in order totransfer it later, in exchange for a per-centage.

The investigation culminated in the arrestof two further Colombian men (aged 19and 22) who were using the bankaccounts to avoid any direct connectionwith the scam.The operation was carried out by officersfrom Benidorm Local Police Station andCastellon Provincial Police Station.

On February 11th the Mayor of Javea, Jose Chulvi,asked ‘Marina Salud’ (the private company in chargeof the health management in ‘La Marina’ area) toopen an extra health centre during this summer toavoid the health collapse of previous years. However,three weeks later Marina Salud has not even repliedto him.‘Marina Salud’ representatives seem to be “sticking totheir guns” even knowing that this could be their last yearin charge of health in the area because of the regionalelections in May. All the political parties, who want an endto 20 years of Partido Popular (PP) rule, have said that ifany of them (PSOE, Compromis, Esquerra Unida orPodemos) win the elections; they will cancel the privatehealth administration, which is not working well in thisarea.It will not be easy to cancel the contract with ‘MarinaSalud’ which does not end until 2023. It will be a long andexpensive process, but the policy of saving money tomake more profits for ‘Marina Salud’ could be usedagainst them. This policy might be acceptable in a privatesector, but not in health.

There have been many mistakes over the past six years,and the outcomes could have been very dangerous:overcrowded emergency departments, patients who aresent home in a hurry, closed clinics in summer due todoctors’ holidays, bed closures, negligence with fatalconsequences, health centres almost closed for lack oflocums. There was also the chaotic case in Denia whenthe Public Health Department had to force ‘Marina Salud’to send patients to ‘La Pedrera’ to be hospitalized, whenthe company was going to send them home.

“Lovely surroundings excellant meal”Reviewed 20 February 2015We visited this lovely eatery whilst staying with friends in Javea.We came here years ago and enjoyed it but apparently itdeclined a bit, so they changed owner, refurbed and its reallynice inside. The food was lovely with a small bowl of soup as acomplimentary starter, I am vegetarian and had the grilled vegdish delightful they are using the old grill station again and thesteaks were amazing as some of my party testified. Not thecheapest of the restaurants around but well worth it, my partnerhad the jamon and they have a really professional looking manwho brings the jamon trolley to your table and carves it for you.All in all a really nice evening.

The setmenu is a great deal and you always somehow manage to fit inpudding despite the enormous steaks. This is definitely some-where we will visit time and time again.

The barbe-cue sent delicious smells upstairs and the menu was goodvalue, tasty and well served. the bar is laid out with saddles forseats and it's a great atmosphere. We have over the last few weeks read manyreports about new laws for changing our driv-ing licenses to a Spanish one. Often reportshave been conflicting and confusing.Depending on the newspaper you read or thewebsite you check, everyone has a differenttheory on the new law and whether there is anew law at all.

We spoke to PMR Property Management &Rental and asked their advice on this matterand we received very sound advice. LisaTurner, Director of PMR based in Alfaz del Piwould recommend anyone who is a Residentin Spain to change their Licence for ease ofidentification and communication with theAuthorities and peace of mind. Lisa gave ascenario that if a UK Licence were to be lostand you are Resident in Spain, you would noteasily be able to get a replacement UKLicence from DVLA because you no longerhave a permanent UK address. This could beproblematic as you are always required tohave your Licence with you while driving hereand trying to explain your replacement is com-ing via your best friend’s sister could causeyou more problems with the Police if you arestopped and found not to be carrying one. Ifthe same were to happen and you lost yourSpanish Licence, this can easily be replaced

because you reside here. The Police cannotenforce their penalty points system if yourLicence is not Spanish and as we all know, thelaws can often be misunderstood or miscon-strued even by the authorities themselves. It isa legal requirement in the UK to change yournon British Licence within a certain time frameso we would recommend you apply the samerules while residing here in Spain and carry aSpanish Licence.You can easily change your Licence using the“One Stop Shop” services at PMR. MERCEDES C450 AMG 4MATIC (2015)This is the Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG4Matic, a high-performance C-class thatsits a rung below the range-topping C63,just as the Audi S4 tucks below RS4. Thebasics are this: a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6pairs with a seven-speed automatic gear-box and all-wheel drive. A choice ofsaloon and estate body styles are avail-able. Left-hand-drive markets get theC450 from June 2015. UK sales, howev-er, don’t start until June 2016. Why?Because this is the first 4Matic C-class,and engineering the application for right-hand drive is responsible for the delay.

So is this a real AMG, or just a trimlevel?It’s a proper AMG, albeit AMG-lite. This isthe only V6 in the C-class line-up, and itmakes 362bhp and 384lb ft. There arecarryover C63 suspension components,the seven-speed ’box shares C63 pro-gramming logic and, just like the C63, theelectro-mechanical steering ditches thebase car’s variable-rate ratio for a morenatural fixed ratio.But where AMG says there are no plansfor an all-wheel-drive C63, the C450comes only with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. It’s specially fettled for C450duties, with a more driver-focussed 33/67front-to-rear torque split.

Does the drive merit the AMG badge?It does. This is a neatly positioned vehicle,with a large portion of the driving flair thatelevates the C63 so far beyond its C-classsiblings, without stepping on big-brother’stoes – and, of course, all-wheel drive adds

a further level of separation and a signifi-cantly altered character

There’s a different character to the V6 too,with none of the explosiveness thatdefines the V8 AMG. After the C63, it’s alittle disappointing when you first turn thekey, but it’s smooth, refined, fast and flex-ible and, actually, when you up the ante, akeener soundtrack comes to the fore – ar e a l l yengagingw a r b l ethat’s com-parable toa slightlyd i a l l e dd o w nJaguar XE3.0 S.There’s atiny delayb e t w e e naccelerat-ing and all that torque coming on tap, butit’s very small and, ultimately, inconse-quential to driving enjoyment.

There are five driving modes to choosefrom: Efficient, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plusand the driver-configurable Individual;they tailor the steering weight, throttleresponse, gearbox logic and enginesound. Select Sport Plus and there aresome properly engaging thunderclaps onthe overrun The electric steering has anicely weighted consistency and is amarked improvement over lesser Cs, buta more natural self-centring action would

be welcome. Really, though, it works verywell with the C450’s impressively tieddown and very consistent feeling frontend. The gearbox is swift and obedient, iflacking the absolute incisiveness of dual-clutch units and Jaguar’s eight-speedauto.

What about that all-wheel-drive chas-sis?

It’s very, verygood. Our testroute flowed upinto theP o r t u g u e s ehills over somepretty challeng-ing terrain, andthe C450 deliv-ered a brilliantbalance ofcomposure andengagement .The front end

grips hard, and when you get on the throt-tle you can really feel the rear bias push-ing you through the corner. In some waysit’s actually more satisfying than the C63,because you can deploy most of thepower most of the time. It’d be fascinatingto compare lap times on a wet circuit.

In Comfort mode the chassis feels very,well, comfortable, with the obvious trade-offs in absolute handling finesse. PerhapsSport Plus will feel like overkill in the UK,but on these test roads it worked brilliant-ly: excellent body control, meatier steer-ing, telepathic gearbox logic and that

more exciting soundtrack.

And all – on these roads at least – withoutcompletely destroying the ride quality.

VerdictThe C450 AMG neatly fills a fairly yawninggap between the comfort of mainstreamC-class models and the outlandishexcesses of the C63. The V6 engine,gearbox, steering and all-wheel-drivechassis make this car a great drive in allconditions, with little apparent trade-off incomfort compared with lesser models. It’sa compelling alternative to the Audi S4,though the new rear-wheel-drive JaguarXE 3.0 S remains a dynamic benchmark –and an all-wheel-drive XE should hit theUK market at a similar time to the Merc.

I drove the C450 only in saloon bodystyle, but the idea of a car this well-round-ed in everything-but-the-kitchen-sinkestate guise could be a dream combina-tion.

Specsavers Opticas launchesnational campaign to collectglasses for Lions ClubsInternational16th February 2015 - SpecsaversOpticas announces the start of acampaign to collect unwanted glass-es to present to the Lions Clubs atthe beginning of May and start their“Recycle for Sight Month” off in thebest possible way. Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin. It hasnothing to do with worms as the name suggests! Themedical term for ringworm of the body is TineaCorporalis. Tinea is a latin term that means growingworm due to the early belief that the infection was causedby a worm. There are other forms of Tinea which affectvarious parts of the body such as Tinea capitis (fungalinfection of the scalp) or Tinea Pedis which affects thefeet

The typical appearance of Tinea corporalis is a round redinflamed patch that spreads outwards. The outer edgeforms a scaly ring. There may be one patch or several.However, the appearance of the rash is not always typi-cal and your Doctor may need to take skin scrapings forexamination to confirm diagnosis. The rash may causeonly mild discomfort but for some people may be very irri-tating and itchy.Ringworm is an infectious disease and may be passeddirectly from person to person by direct skin contact.Sharing towels etc with an infected person can alsospread the infection.Contact with an infected animal can also cause ring-worm. If you suspect that your pet may be infected, seea Vet before you start itching!!

Fungus also survives in soil and can live on surfacessuch as doors that have been touched by an infected per-son.

Ringworm can be easily treated with antifungal creams.Sometimes a steroid cream may also be needed to con-trol itching and inflammation .Other forms of ringwormsuch as that of the scalp normally require treatment withantifungal tablets as cream alone may not clear the infec-tion.Always check with a Doctor before using antifungalpreparations as some groups of people such as thosewith existing illnesses or taking certain medications thatinteract with antifungals, should not use them.

DANGEROUS FOODS FOR DOGS AT CHRISTMASWhich Christmas foods should I avoidgiving my dog?

Christmas is a great time of year andshould be fun for all the family, dogsincluded. Many of us are already awareof some of the potential toxic foods ourdogs can come across and take steps toavoid them.

However, the festive period is one wherewe often introduce all manner of excitingitems into the house that we don’t nor-mally have. Some of these things can bepotentially harmful to our dogs and it’sworth knowing some of the common pit-falls.

COMMON CHRISTMAS FOODDANGERS FOR DOGS:Grapes

Exactly why and how these are poison-ous to dogs is unknown and the exactvolume needed to cause symptoms isdifficult to predict. Some dogs will eatone or two grapes and become seriouslyill but others can eat many of them with-out apparent signs. The only way to besafe is to keep them out of reach of yourdog.

These Christmas fanciesare bad for dogs for anumber of reasons:

Firstly - they are jam-packed full of currentraisins and sultanas.These are all a variationon the ‘grape’ and assuch have the same seri-ous health risks. It iscommon for them toingest far more ‘grapes’in this form than theywould fresh grapesbecause there are somany packed into thesecakes and they aresmaller.

Secondly - they are fullof fat, suet etc which canoften give them severestomach troubles, vomit-ing etc but also, moreworryingly high fat meals

are one of the high risk factors leading topancreatitis. This can be a very seriousand costly disease to treat.

Thirdly – they are usually laced with largeamounts of alcohol which can causemany of the symptoms of intoxicationseen in people.

Chocolate coins and other choccy deco-rations

Most people are aware of the dangers fordogs from eating chocolate and takesteps to avoid leaving any near theirdogs. However, it is not uncommon forpeople to forget about the chocolatecoins or decorations and leave them inan irresistible location. As well as thedangers of the chocolate the actual wrap-ping foil can be problematic as they workthrough the gut system.

After a 'brief' visit to Frankie's Bar, listen-ing to the Chelsea fans discussing thematch prospects, wechecked into the Millennium Hotel, whereonce again all the arrangements by Carlat BEDFRED madethe checking-in procedure very easy.

On Friday afternoon and evening we wentinto central London, using the oyster cardsystemoperating in the capital, for some sight-seeing and enjoying the hustle and bustleof the capital.We woke early on Saturday – possibly inanticipation of the afternoon game, so wetook advantageof the hotel location and had a walk alongthe Thames embankment. By the time wegot back toStamford Bridge we could feel the excite-ment building so we had a walk round thestadium, andsome more photos before we got ready to

go to the Chelsea hospitality suite.

We arrived at the Chelsea hospitalitysuite at 1230pm, minus any footballcolours, warmly welcomedby the suite manager who provided uswith our menus and programmes. Wehad an excellent mealwith suitable liquid refreshments servedby our attentive waitress Nicki, until wewent to ourallocated seats in the West Stand, next tothe 'Shed End' goal mouth end.

The atmosphere was superb with acapacity crowd, and the noisy Burnleyaway fans singing andchanting , the teams came onto the pitch,the Chelsea football song 'Blue is theColour' was playedall the way through, the ref blew the whis-tle and we were off. The seats were reallysuperb, paddedwith heaters in the roof blowing warmingair down onto the fans – luxury.

The first half was really exciting, Chelseaplayed well but Burnley had theirmoments as well.

Back to the hospitality suite for half-termrefreshments, including that Turf Moorstaple Benny 'n'

Hot, which was being sampled by othersin the hospitality suite.

We returned refreshed to our seats for aneven more exciting half – never has afootball match gone so quickly !

Heard from Chelsea fans 'come onChelsea its not Real Madrid its Burnley'.And what a result 1-1.

The Chelsea fans sat near us shook ourhands and said 'well done', they were abit shell-shocked.

We were probably the only ones smilingwhen we returned back to our seats in thehospitality suite for the post-match drinks,still celebrating the result.

More sightseeing in London Sunday andMonday, including the London Eye andthe West End. We left the capital Mondayafternoon from Euston after having agreat time.

We had a fabulous weekend, and thor-oughly enjoyed ourselves so a BIGTHANK YOU to Chelsea Hospitality, BETFRED and Eric and Terry.

Scotland prop Alasdair Dickinson has crit-icised George Clancy following the Irishreferee's performance in Saturday's SixNations game at Murrayfield.

Scotland suffered a third defeat in thisyear's Six Nations after being beaten 22-19 by Italy - and face the possibility of afourth wooden spoon in 11 years.

But, while Dickinson said Scotland "shouldhave stopped" the driving mauls Italy usedto devastating effect as they came back towin with a late penalty try, the Edinburghforward insisted Clancy did nothing to helpthe home side at the scrum.

The set-piece duel was held up timeand again in the first half as Clancylectured both sides on their engagemethod before finally scolding thefront-rowers for showing a "terribleattitude".

But Dickinson said he had no ideawhat the referee's issue was."I think he was making a mountain

out of a molehill at times. When he let usscrum, we scrummed really well and gotpenalties," he said. "It was just frustratingthat it seemed to take an age to set up.

"The scrum is so heavily regulated now,but it seems like front-rows don't knowanything about scrummaging any more -and refs do. I don't know many prop refs tobe honest. "It's frustrating because the lasttwo games we have scrummaged reallywell. And at times on Saturday we did."

The Scots' defeat to Italy follows a 15-8loss to France in Paris and a 26-23reverse at home to Wales.

Ireland moved a step closer toretaining their Six Nations title andcompleting a Grand Slam with a 19-9win over England at the AvivaStadium in Dublin on Sunday.

ALONSO TO MISSAUSTRALIAN GP

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso will miss the AustralianGrand Prix following his crash during the secondpre-season test in Barcelona.

Kevin Magnussen, who Alonso has replaced for the 2015season, will partner Jenson Button in Melbourne.

Alonso has been ruled out on medical advice butMcLaren remain confident that the two-time world cham-pion will return for the Malaysia GP at the end of March.

In a statement, the team confirmed doctors had advisedAlonso not to drive in the season-opening race ‘to min-imise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is nor-mal medical procedure when treating athletes after con-cussions’.

However, according to McLaren, Alonso's doctors havedetected 'no evidence whatsoever of any injury' and per-mitted the 33-year-old to resume training.Alonso was rendered unconscious during his accident atthe Circuit de Catalunya on February 22 when he lost

control of his MP4-30 car and struck the track wall at highspeed. McLaren later attributed the accident to an unpre-dictable 'gust of wind'.

The Australian event will be the first race weekend thatAlonso has not competed in since 2002, when he was atest driver for Renault. The Spaniard tweeted that itwould "be tough not to be in Australia" but he "under-stand the recommendations" and the risk of a secondsuch impact in a short period of time.
