PresidentNoelthenpresentedaCertificateofAppreciationtoRtnGerriGriffin,whowasthereonbehalfofJamesDeanPharmacy,andtheBowelscanprogram.GUESTSPEAKER,EDWARDBLACKWELL(WOODY)FROMTHEDUNKELDRACINGCLUB.Woodyisa4thgenerationDunkedlocal,andhetoldusthathefoolishlygaveuptheideaofbecomingaminingengineertogojackarooing!HewenttoMarcusOldhamAg.Collegefor3years,thencamehometothefamilyfarm,Corea,inDunkeld.Aswellasafarmingenterprise,theyhavefarmstaysandawinery.HisfirstinteractionswiththeDunkeldRacingClubwerethroughhisfather,whowasonthecommitteeinthe1970s.Theyusedtogoalongtotheraceswiththeirparents,butspentalotoftimeplayingwithTonkatoysandnotlookingatthehorses!Intheearlydays,thecarscoulddriveintothegroundsandparkalongtherunningrail.TheeventwasalwaysBYOthen,andmanyproblemsoccurredwithpatronswhooftenhadcompetitionstoseewhocouldbringinthebiggest“Esky”.Aftertheraces,therewereoftenB&SBalls.Oneoftheregularactsaftertheraceswereover,thepatronswouldhavea“nuderun”downthestraight,butthelocalgentrysoonstoppedthisbywaitingatthefinishlinetodispersetherunnerselsewhere!Woodybecameacommitteememberin2006.Bythen,theclubwasinfullswing,gatheringhugecrowds.Thesettingcertainlyattractedpeopletogothere,especiallyifthedaywassunny.

Thecrowdnumbershaverisentoaround10,000,andthemanagementhasrefinedthesystem,sothatthedayismorefamilyfriendly.Crowdcontrolhasbecomeaveryimportantpartofa“dayattheraces”,andthereiszerotolerancetobadbehaviouranddrunkenness.Ifabusloadofpeopleturnupandtheyarealldrunkandunruly,thentheydon’tevengetthroughthegate.Since2010,theinfrastructurehaschanged,andtherearetheeverpopularmarqueesaroundtherails,andinthecentreofthecourse.TheseareextremelypopularwithCorporateenterprise.Thereisnowonlineticketing,verypopular,andveryquick,withticketscanningviaiPhoneatthegate.AlotofthefoodsourcesandvolunteerworkissourcedfromclubssuchasRotary,Lions,Netballandfootballclubs,playgroupsandcricketclubs,andremunerationissuppliedbywayofequivalent“volunteerwages”.“FashionsontheField”isalwayspopular,andinrecentyearsthegentlemenhavehadtheir“FashionsontheField”too.Thisyear,thecommitteestillstandsat16.Sadly,HenryLeech,whoservedtheclubfor68years,passedaway,andwillbeahugelosstotheclub.OnNovember12ththisyear,itwillbeanotherbigdayforDunkeld,andweallwishtheClubandCommitteethebestfortherunningoftheWilliamThomsonDunkeldCup.ThankyouWoodyforaninterestingandinformativetalk.
