Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1951 and the Academy Honorary Award at the 24th Academy Awards, Rashomon is a Japanese period drama based on two short stories written by Akutagawa, who is considered the father of Japanese short stories.

Directed by Akira Kurosawa, one of the most influential filmmakers in cinema history, the story begins with a priest, a woodcutter and a commoner recounting the story of a murdered samurai as they are seeking refuge from a rainstorm at a gatehouse.

With three other witnesses - the samurai’s wife, a notorious bandit and the spirit of the samurai, recalled through a medium - being asked to recount the same story, and each giving different and contradictory points of view, this film explores multiple realities versus one truth. The sixTh instalment of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix has recorded its highest attendance since the inaugural Night Race in 2008. This is not surprising, considering the amount of excitement and entertainment on and off the track.

The Marina Bay Street Circuit saw a total of 262,527 visitors over the three-day sell-out race and weekend.

thE stARs dEscENdThe fans also flocked to the entertainment and music superstars, with packed concerts every night. Over 12,000 screaming ‘Owlets’ and ‘Beliebers’ caught their idols Owl City and Justin Bieber in the closing concert, even though it was separately ticketed from the other events.

The supernovas were undoubtedly K-pop group Big Bang, with over 35,000 fans at their concert, and The Killers and Rihanna with over 60,000 and 65,000 fans present, respectively.

Other performers included veterans Tom Jones and Bob Geldorf, magician of the moment Dynamo, and local favourites The Sam Willows and The Great Spy Experiment.

These and many other entertaining acts added to the fun and festivity of the Singapore Night Race which, apart from the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, included track action from GP 2 and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

hAt-tRicK chAMpRed Bull Renault’s Sebastian Vettel claimed his third

and most commanding victory in the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, making it a hat-trick of wins in the unique Night Race.

The 26-year-old German won the 61-lap race by a margin of 32.627 seconds from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, with Lotus Renault’s Kimi Raikkonen finishing a brilliant third after a weekend of physical pain from an old back injury. It was Alonso’s fifth Singapore podium but Raikkonen’s first. Alonso won the race in 2008 and 2010.

Starting from pole position, Vettel almost lost out at the start to Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes but after edging along and past the Red Bull car, Rosberg could not coax his car through Turns 1 and 2 without yielding to Vettel once more.

Said Vettel, “The car was incredible. I said to the team, this doesn’t just happen like that, by accident or by luck; there’s hard work behind it and I appreciate it – it’s just a pleasure to drive it around this crazy track!”

One of the heroes of the night was Raikkonen. The 33-year-old Finn almost didn’t take to the track because of pain from a back injury sustained 12 years ago. He came through from 13th on the grid to claim his first Singapore podium.

Vettel also set the race’s fastest lap of 1 min 48.574 sec on lap 46, at an average speed of 167.940km/h.

The Killers were first supposed to come to Singapore in 2010. This was what I posted as my status when I found out their concert had been cancelled:

“Can you Read My Mind? Somebody Told Me The Killers concert is cancelled, and For Reasons Unknown at that. It gets to my Bones. I'm thinking, are we Human, or are we dancer? But I’m trying to be Mr Brightside. If you too had a ticket, you should try to Smile Like You Mean It.”

You should realise by now that I am a fan. Nevertheless, I went for their concert at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix with a fairly open mind.

bRANdoN’s toWNAfter three years that seemed an eternity for fans, The Killers had finally ridden into town. Not long after these Nevada cowboys strutted onto stage, to borrow a line from them, it felt as if they were “burning down the highway skyline on the back of a hurricane”.

To say that they took the crowd in Singapore by storm would be an understatement. I found it hard not to be bowled over by the exuberant charm of frontman Brandon Flowers, the energetic riffs, and the heartfelt lyrics.

The audience was so enamoured of Mr Flowers that the visage of every screaming female fan was practically that of ecstasy. In fact, for one brief un-macho moment, I found myself wishing that I was him with that voice, those words and the charm that could slay the ladies.

The Killers slay ecstatic Singapore audienceListed no. 3 by amazon.com uK among the top 10 best-seLLing artistes and aLbums of the decade, the KiLLers certainLy Lit the over 60,000-strong croWdby Lester J Wan

Not surprisingly, there were posts by young fans on social media addressing him as ‘brother’ Brandon. Barely halfway through their set, you knew who owned the night, and the town.

A lightNiNg stRiKEWith their talismanic lightning on stage, Flowers almost immediately launched into the rousing “Mr Brightside”. In an instant, they had the crowd singing along to the melancholic yet catchy lyrics: “Jealousy / Turning saints into the sea / Swimming through sick lullabies / Choking on your alibis / But it's just the price I pay / Destiny is calling me / Open up my eager eyes / ‘Cause I'm Mr Brightside”.

The crowd went wild and rarely calmed down after. Other popular hits to which the crowd sang along to included “Spaceman”, “Human” and “Somebody Told Me”. They even amused the slightly older ones with their rock rendition of the 1980s hit by Tiffany, “I Think We’re Alone Now”.

By the time Flowers sang “When You Were Young” and the lyrics of “And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live…” it seemed like this man, who was born to a Mormon family, had taken his audience to a higher plane.

Like a lightning strike, it was brilliant and over all too quickly. Still, the captive audience took consolation in Flowers’ parting words: "It's taken us ten years to come, and we've had a wonderful time."

With the appropriate Mobile Food Wagon license applied from the relevant government bodies such as the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), National Parks Board (NPB) and the National Environmental Agency (NEA), you can get started in the food trucking business.

The Travelling C.O.W and Kerbside Gourmet are two out of the five current vendors in Singapore. We speak with both of them for the latest food trucking news.

The Travelling C.O.WKaren Cheng, creator of The Travelling C.O.W, lived abroad in Europe and the USA and felt that there was something lacking in the food scene in Singapore. Thus, she started her own food truck.

Being a foodie, this idea was a perfect fit for Karen.

“It takes a lot of time and patience to set this up. But all of

our food is homemade,” says Karen.

“I have a trained chef as well; hence the quality is there. And

slowly it spread through word of mouth,” she shares.

The Travelling C.O.W serves international favourites such as Beef Bourguignon with Mash, Chilli Crab Pasta and Seafood Laksa Wraps for $6.

Kerbside gOurmeTKerbside Gourmet, brainchild of Luan Ee, is a social enterprise. With every main dish sold, one is given to the needy. They also help families in need of financial assistance.

“There are no manpower issues with a food truck; or rental issues or long hours which are issues the food and beverage industry faces,” she says.

She had spent time training in culinary school and sells food such as Pea Puree with 62-degree egg ($12), Cold Mentaiko Pasta ($15) as well as Oven-Baked Basil Chicken ($12).

the last time I was at Fat Cow, Group Executive Chef Dan Segall was tasked to develop a few special recipes exclusively for Weekender.

While he was creating these dishes before me, his culinary artistry and technical skills were apparent. But the proof is always in the eating.

That’s why, when I was invited back for a tasting of their new menu, I didn’t hesitate for a moment.

advenTure in TexTure & flavOurOK, I admit. I am a carnivore. Evolution has made us the top predators. And top predators don’t eat leafy cabbage.

So, when dishes come to me short on meaty ingredients, I don’t get excited. Tasting the first dish, an appetiser, the Osen Tomayo No Gyu Furai (egg with fried bone marrow), $16, was just one of those "occupational hazards".

Despite my nature I can still fully appreciate meat-light fare, courtesy of parental nurture.

The Osen Tomayo dish was a lightly-poached egg and golden fried nugget of bone marrow, on top of a bed of seaweed in a bowl of citrus dashi (miso broth). The recommendation is to break the poached egg, mix the medley, and eat it with a spoon.

As you’d expect, there is a “yolky” flavour to the whole dish. The tempura bone marrow was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The seaweed and egg’s slippery texture contrasted surprisingly with the soft

crunchiness of the seaweed with every bite, while the broth gives it a citrus-y freshness balanced with salty umami flavours.

Overall, this is a finely-crafted dish designed to enhance many different taste dimensions.

a symphOny Of flavOursNext, I tried the Wagyu No Kakuni, $38, (Wagyu rib meat simmered in a sweet, ginger soy broth). This was a stewed dish with small delicate chunks of Wagyu and translucent white carrot in a reddish brown broth.

The Wagyu was tender and melted in the mouth. It was no surprise there.

The real star, though, was the broth. It added a strong yet balanced, flavourful, salty yet sweet, taste to the delicate Wagyu beef.

There was a refreshing and surprising zing from the zest of the yuzu (a citrus fruit). All the strong pungent ingredients created a symphony of flavours that was both pungent and balanced – apparently a Dan Segall style.

Tilly SoeliSTyo, the brains behind womenswear brand Possi-tilly-ty, marries impeccable construction with her signature style of modern versatility.

She conceptualised her brand, Possi-tilly-ty, by drawing from urban women who desire stylish yet comfortable apparel to support them in their day-to- day lives.

Artistic BeginningsSince she was in secondary school, the Indonesian-born Tilly has always been picky about fashion.

“Being petite, skinny and scrawny [in secondary school] I had to customise my clothes through a tailor, even right down to my uniform. I refused to wear those unflattering cuts and had mine made in a tapered pencil-style skirt in similar fabric,” she explains.

“Thank God, I got away with it by giving my teacher the excuse the ones that are available at the uniform stores are way too big for me!”

Having worked her way up as a Creative Director for Sino-London, an international pret-a-porter label, she launched Possi-tilly-ty in 2011.

celeBrity sightingsTilly has a loyal following with

celebrity nods from Paige Chua, Jeanette Aw as well as Candyce Toh from Mediacorp. She even styled two of the contestants in the singing programme The Final One during their Top 10 live performance.

Her recent Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, Gradual Progression, features a mash-up of drape and boxy details, and a juxtaposition of sheer and matte fabrics complemented with graphic and floral prints.

“Monochrome trends that are evergreen will be in our Autumn/Winter collection. Coincidentally, different hues of pink are also a trend element in the international runway which we will also introduce as part of our collection,” Tilly says.

current & Future PlAnsShe is currently part of the Temporium, a pop-up store, diner and gallery on Dunlop Street which features many local brands and artists.

“Women in general inspire me... my goal is to create versatile, beautiful and functional clothes that they will love forever,” says Tilly.

Possibilities with Possi-tilly-ty

Combining positivity with possibility is what loCal brand possi-tilly-ty does

by Cheryl Chia

Everyone loses hair when combing, brushing or washing, and even when

sleeping. It is no wonder as normal hair grows in cycles and goes through three stages – growing, resting and falling.

Each strand of hair grows in a cavity in the skin called a follicle for two to six years, then rests, and eventually falls out.

A new strand of hair soon begins growing in its place. Baldness generally occurs when the hair follicle shrinks over time, and eventually does not grow new hair.

ABnormAl hAir lossPeople generally lose about 50 strands of hair daily, and hair loss becomes abnormal when one loses over 100 strands of hair a day.

This may show up as a thinning of hair, a patchy loss of hair over the scalp, or affect hair-bearing areas such as the beard or eyebrows.

The most common form of hair loss is known as andro-genetic alopecia, and occurs in both men and women.

In men, this condition is known as male pattern hair loss. This is when hair starts falling above both temples and from the crown.

Next, the hairline recedes into a characteristic ‘M’ shape, then a horseshoe ‘U’ shape pattern of hair around the sides of the head, and eventually results in partial or complete baldness.

For female pattern hair loss, it commonly starts from the hairline and it expands to the crown area once it reaches the advance stages.

Who is At risk?In men, baldness is largely related to genes and male sex hormones such as dihydrotestosterone. For women, hair loss is usually related to aging, changes in the levels of androgens, and a family history of this condition.

Many men experience the early stage of male pattern hair loss from as early as their 20s. Even though there usually aren’t medical repercussions and hair problems are just biological setbacks, losing hair can affect one’s self-esteem or psychological wellbeing.

If you are a man in your 20s with thinning hair, and have a family history of hair loss, it could very well be that you are experiencing the early stages of male pattern hair loss.

treAtmentThere are two approved medications used to treat hair loss. One is Minoxidil, a solution to apply directly on the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. It slows down hair loss for many men, and some can grow new hair.

The other is finasteride, a pill that interferes with the body’s production of a male hormone linked to baldness. However, hair loss returns when one stops using these medications. It may be a good idea to consider using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Beijing 101: herBAl remediesAs a component of TCM, Chinese herbal remedies can balance and invigorate the body's natural systems naturally, and it is an art to integrate various herbs to

achieve certain effects or purposes. Beijing 101’s herbal hair treatments contain the combination of herbs needed to promote optimum results on hair growth.

Beijing 101 has a prescription range of 101 hair care products to treat different kinds of hair conditions, including hair loss, grey hair and oily scales. Only premium grade Chinese herbs - such as dang gui, ginseng and he shou wu (a flower called Fallopia multiflora) - are used to treat hair and scalp problems.

QuAliFied consultAntsTheir team of qualified hair care consultants and physicians are trained in traditional Chinese medicine and have 39 years of experience in treating hair problems.

Their anti-hair thinning programs are based on the philosophy that the blood needs to be nourished for healthy hair growth. Some of these herbs which nourish and strengthen the blood include angelica sinensis (dang gui), radix ligustici wallichii (chuan xiong), and fructus mori albae (sang shen zi).

Beijing 101’s treatment products are sold only with prescriptions from their consultants and TCM physicians, who will review your progress regularly to ensure that you benefit from the products most suited to your individual hair and scalp condition.

Mr Ng Teck Thay, an enthusiastic singer, recounts his experience: “I didn’t believe that hair loss could happen to me until I started to see clumps of hair at the drainage hole whenever I washed my hair. Combined with a stressful lifestyle, I began to notice more hair thinning on my crown area.”

“Initially, I tried to convince myself that this was just a temporary issue until my fellow singing mates raised the issue to me after seeing massive hair-fall on my shirt. It was then I knew this was a much more serious problem and that I should seek help,” he says.

After undergoing the customised treatments at Beijing 101, Mr Ng was elated to see major improvements in the condition of his hair.

“Beijing 101’s hair treatments… have helped me to regain my hair health. The hair consultants at Beijing 101 are very thorough in helping… and advising me on proper hair care habits to attain a healthier scalp,” he says.
