Battle in Berlin: Barcelona & Juventus fight to be King of European FootballEuropean football titans Juventus and Barcelona square off in a dream UEFA Champions League Final in Berlin – here’s what to look forward to in this clash

Both Juventus and Barcelona are of Europe’s elite footballing pedigree, and are striving for a historic treble of trophies. So, it’s perhaps fitting that the two titans square off against one another to determine who the King of European Football is.

And with tickets for the glittery final in Berlin selling for up to £12,000 ($24,961), it is certainly a show that promises quality with, perhaps, a dose of drama.

MAking AMends & gunning for gloryFollowing a painful defeat to Atletico Madrid in last year’s Champions League quarter-finals, Barcelona has been raring to make amends all season. And Barca has begun by picking up this season’s La Liga title.

“This is the first,” remarked defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets after the game, referring to Barca’s quest to chase a memorable treble.

“It’s time to celebrate because this (La Liga) is the most difficult competition – you face all the teams. Now we have one trophy, we’re missing two and there are two games to go. It’s certainly a historic season,” he said.

Busquets was referring to facing off against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) Final on May 31, as well as the Champions League Final on Jun 7.

The old lAdy seeking To MAke neW hisToryDespite Juventus going in as underdogs (with Barcelona having superstars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez), there is almost a quiet sense of belief in Italy that they will emerge winners of the Champions League trophy at the end of the 90 minutes.

Italian football agent David Sale, 45, based in Rome, said, “Everybody here thinks Juventus is going to win. They have such a good quality going into these finals, and many in the market are saying that they will win in Berlin.” And Sale, who works with players in Serie A and La Liga, thinks that now that the “Old Lady” has come so far, she would be hungry to make a new, glorious history.

“Tevez has been a mastermind this season, and when you combine that with Pogba and Pirlo, you get a masterpiece. More importantly, I think Juve have a tremendous team spirit now, and the players are really feeling it, so for me they have the best chance of lifting the title,” affirmed Sale.

In total, Çakır has taken charge of 70 UEFA matches and his last high-profile Champions League fixture was the round-of-16 first-leg match between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, in France.

no BAd Blood or BiTingAfter the incident involving Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini and Barcelona’s Suarez at the last World Cup, where the Uruguayan bit the Italian on the shoulder, it seems that all the pre-match talk has been clouded by their reunion on the pitch. However, Chiellini insisted that he bears no grudge against Suarez, ahead of their showdown next week.

The Juventus vice-captain said, “It’s been a week since we’ve qualified for the Champions League Final and everybody is asking me about Luis Suarez.”

“For me there’s no problem with the issue. I don’t need to talk to him, (and) I don’t feel any grudge towards him. I don’t feel anything. I will mark Suarez just like Karim Benzema or I’ll mark Leo Messi just like I did with Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar like Gareth Bale,” he said.

Perhaps it’s time to let bygones be bygones – and leave it to the football to do the talking. Let the Champions League Final begin and may the greatest titan emerge victorious.

There is only one more game left of the season in the Barlcays Premier League and one of three teams – Sunderland, Newcastle United or Hull City – could join the already relegated QPR and Burnley in the League Championship next season.

Which is the last team that will go down? We take a look at the last match of each of the clubs at risk.

Hull City vs ManCHester united – sun, 24 MayThe simple maths of it all is that Hull City needs three points against Manchester United to stand even a chance of staying up. Anything less and it will be relegated.

The Tigers will be buoyed by the decent first-half showing against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, despite eventually going down 2-0 at White Hart Lane. However, it has been a difficult time for Steve Bruce who has had to contend with midfielder Jake Livermore being suspended for testing positive for cocaine.

“We have to believe that we can beat Manchester United,” claimed Bruce, and why not? The Red Devils have nothing to play for but pride, now that third place and automatic Champions League qualification is beyond them. Although, by the same token, a side playing in a relaxed mode can often fair better than a side with all to play for. Prediction: Hull City 1-0 Manchester Utd

newCastle united vs west HaM united – sun, 24 MayOn paper, Newcastle has the easier of the games to be played by the relegation-threatened sides but the Magpies know that only a win will guarantee top-flight football next season. One point from the last ten games certainly suggests that they will struggle to get anything out of the game.

“It’s one of the biggest matches in the club’s history,” said manager John Carver, who also pleaded with the fans to be the side’s 12th man. The game will certainly mark Carver’s last game in charge at St James’ Park and, given the team’s recent form, I can only imagine a goalless draw is on the cards. Prediction: Newcastle 0-0 West Ham

CHelsea vs sunderland – sun, 24 MayI’m sure I’m allowed to point you to last season’s result at Stamford Bridge when Sunderland came from behind to snatch a 2-1 win over Chelsea, courtesy of goals from Connor Wickham and Fabio Borini. With the Blues having nothing to play for and not really caring if they even get a point, I can see the Black Cats securing Premier League safety. Prediction: Chelsea 1-1 Sunderland

wHo will Go down?Steve Bruce has not beaten Manchester United in his 17 years as a manager but I have a sneaky feeling his Tigers can get three points from their home game at the KC Stadium, with the Red Devils having nothing to play for.

I feel Newcastle will get a draw against West Ham, a goalless one at that. Meanwhile, Sunderland will have to battle hard for a point against Chelsea but it’s highly possible with Chelsea’s recent loss to West Brom.

In the final shake up, it means that Newcastle might well be relegated because of its significantly poorer goal difference. What drama at the end of another exciting Premier League season!

You may have seen its trailers in cinemas recently. A bright young lady, Casey Newton (played by Britt Robertson of The Longest Ride and “The Secret Circle”), stumbles upon a mysterious pin that, when touched, transports her to a pristine futuristic city called “Tomorrowland”.

Suddenly, Casey is squashed in a bathtub with Academy Award winner George Clooney. Clooney, mainly unfashionably dressed in washed-up and unpolished garb, plays genius inventor Frank Walker, who realises that Casey is the answer to saving Tomorrowland.

So what and where exactly is Tomorrowland, and why is it in danger?

Save the Girl, Save the WorldAlthough Disney has released three separate trailers for this movie, we still have very little idea of what to expect.

The trailers all conceal major plot points, such as why Casey was chosen, why she should trust an old man in jeans and plaid, and where exactly this enigmatic Tomorrowland is in time and space.

What’s evident is that there is severe unrest in this shiny new world. While Casey may be the key to fixing the future, the duo is running out of time, being pursued by a fearsome android army.

When Frank transports Casey into Tomorrowland, they run into some faces we’re familiar with – but not sure if we can trust. Among them is a brilliant scientist, played by Hugh Laurie. Experience with his character in “House” tells me that we should be wary of him.

Fun-Filled FutureDespite how confused we might be, Tomorrowland looks like a total blast. Compared to the dull reality that Casey and Frank were previously stuck in, this fantasy land is bursting with action and surprise at every turn.

spectacle doesn’t come as a surprise. Bird is known for his beautiful and atmospheric work on animations such as Iron Giant and Ratatouille, as well as for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Explaining his vision for Tomorrowland, Bird said that he wanted to amend the dark outlook of the future that many seem to have accepted.

He said, “At one time the future was consistently presented as this bright thing where all these problems were going to be solved. I remember that feeling of wow… [Now we’re asking] is it possible to get back to it?”

loSt in adventureIf you’ve been to a Disneyland theme park, you might find this futuristic metropolis familiar. That’s because the world of Tomorrowland is partially based on the themed section of the same name that can be found in five Disneyland parks.

But you don’t have to worry about any commercialised product placement in the movie. Bird only took the idea of the themed land and worked around it – so you’re not going to find Space Mountain or Disneyland flyers on-screen.

A behind-the-scenes feature reveals that Tomorrowland was primarily inspired by Walt Disney’s utopian vision of how technology and science could transform lives.

As Clooney said, he [Disney] “was interested in the future and what it could be”.

So, this is Disney’s great vision for the future. I just hope there will be less mystery and more jet packs when the future comes around.

You may have been enchanted by his flamboyant getai movie 881 (released in 2007), or stirred by his controversial gangster film 15 (released in 2003 but based on his earlier short film) – talented director Royston Tan has a way of reminding us about the forgotten faces of Singapore, and his latest project will fill you up with nostalgia.

Titled “Old Friends”, the documentary serves up heartfelt tales and recollections on a delectable platter. Be swept back to old-school Singapore through local snacks, and reconnect with the nation’s collective memories through a story of food, struggles, love and joy.

Releasing this final installation in his series – preceded by “Old Places” (2010) and “Old Romances” (2012) – the acclaimed filmmaker shares his favourite memories of Singapore with Weekender.

What have you been busy With or involved in recently?I am currently doing the final post-production for “Old Friends”, and also preparing for the completion of 7 Letters and 3688.

did you go around eating as research for “old friends”?In the first round, the directors ate from the stalls. In the second round, a research team went around the proposed hawker stalls to verify the taste and the authenticity of the food.

What’s your favourite traditional singapore food?Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck in Army Market. I like to eat in Geylang because it still retains its charm, although it’s changing very quickly. I just like the authentic feel Geylang has.

Which is your favourite film?I think my all-time-favourite has to be 12 Storeys by Eric Khoo. He set the benchmark for local films back in the ‘90s when there were none. With 12 Storeys, he made the HDBs look so exotic.

hoW do you think singaporean films have been evolving?Right now, Singaporean films have a lot more of their own identity. Back then I think we were still searching for a particular image of ourselves.

Right now though, our filmmakers are more vocal in expressing local issues and you do hear a very distinctive Singapore voice.

do you think the local audience is more accepting of controversial films?I think over the last few years Singaporeans have opened up. Much more than what we imagined; the government had to keep up with it.

The fact that we are a mature society means Singaporeans can think. Hopefully one day we can do away with the film classification system.

hoW do you feel about local films, such as ilo ilo, Winning aWards at international festivals noW?I’m very happy, because I think that every genre of film in Singapore deserves to be seen. Films like Ilo Ilo really open up more doors for young filmmakers to make other kinds of movies which are different from mainstream films.

What’s your favourite childhood memory?In primary school, whenever I heard the ice cream seller’s bell, I told myself I just had to endure another 10 minutes, and that would be my reward. Chocolate chip ice cream was my favourite flavour – along with the colourful bread, it brightened up my day.

Every time I think of that I think that life should be so simple, we should always take delight in simplicity.

if you could have a superpoWer, What Would it be?I want to go back to the ‘80s to see my childhood, taste how kopitiam coffee tasted like and to read the newspapers and see its old font. I think that the ‘80s was a very nice, simple and traditional time. As a kid, I didn’t really fully experience it.

What’s your personal benchmark for a “good” successful film?A successful film doesn’t have to be classified as award-winning or a commercial success. The most important thing is that a film has to speak to the heart of the audience.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?It’s important to keep your passion alive and don’t rush to make your very first feature film, because you can never go back to make your very first film again.

So take your time to slowly craft your film, your story, and treat it like your lover. This is very important. Don’t rush into making your first feature film; and also don’t rush into relationships too quickly.

Actress to Creative Director of the SEA Games Ceremonies

What’s the play you first fell in love With?The first play I watched was “M Butterfly”, written by David Henry Hwang. It was staged on the West End, starred Anthony Hopkins and our very own Glen Goei.

It was such an experience for me. I was 14 years old then. It changed my life! I had already wanted to be an actor and was discovering the theatre in the best way possible!

you’ve Won a couple of aWards and you’re Well respected in theatre. What plans might you have for the stage in the not-too-distant future?In the last five years, I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in massive-scale productions (i.e. the SEA Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies) and I have learnt so much!

There is a part of me that is actually yearning for a good old text-based play that will give me a chance to work closely with actors again!

is there a play that you think is absolutely brilliant and you Wish that you’d Written?My favourite play would still be

“Bent” by Martin Sherman. As it is a play about the persecution of homosexuals

during the Holocaust, I could never imagine myself being able to write it as the subject matter is too great on so many levels.

Also, I have no delusions about myself being a playwright. I can’t write!

you Were the first female creative director of the national day parade, in 2011, and noW you’ve taken on the role for the ceremonies of the 28th sea games. hoW did you get into creative Work for major events? I was fortunate enough to have been invited and appointed by the Organising Committees of NDP 2011 and the 28th SEA Games.

What unique aspects can attendees look forWard to at the ceremonies this year? The 28th SEA Games in Singapore will be a once-in-a-generation experience as it only comes round once every 22 years. That in itself should be reason enough for everyone to go get a ticket to support the Games, [the] show, [and the] athletes as they will really need the nation’s support behind them.

For the show, it will be the biggest spectacle in the National Stadium so far and there are so many reasons you have to catch it. We have a massive aerial system that allows us to fly performers and aerial props, gorgeous costumes, breathtaking multimedia, 5,000 performers… The list goes on.

I hear tickets are almost all sold out already.

if you Were a getai or karaoke star, Which song Would be your anthem?“Sugar” by Maroon 5, for no other reason except that it is a great song and it makes me happy!

hoW Will you personally be celebrating sg50?By being grateful that we have come this far.

What advice do you have for singaporeans Who’re interested in pursuing a career in the arts?Only pursue a career in the arts because you love it and you cannot imagine life without it.

Beatrice Chia-Richmond is often thought of as the pretty, lanky actress or the wife of DJ Mark Richmond – she shares with Weekender her sentiments on her role of Creative Director of the upcoming SEA Games Ceremonies

Most of us know Beatrice Chia-Richmond, whether for being an actress, stage director or the wife of DJ Mark Richmond. Few know, however, the extent of her creative talent.

In her directorial debut, “Shopping and F**king”, Beatrice won the title of Best Director in the 2003 Life Theatre Awards. In 2011, Beatrice became the first female Creative Director of the National Day Parade, to much acclaim. Now, in 2015, she reprises her prestigious role for a much larger spectacle, for the regional 28th SEA Games held in Singapore.

Beatrice shares with Weekender her very personal thoughts on theatre as well as on her babies – the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 28th SEA Games.

apart from the ceremonies of the 28th sea games, have you been involved in other projects recently?I started work on the 28th SEA Games in October 2013. The ceremonies have turned out to be all-consuming and probably my most challenging project to date.

In April 2014, I directed Ah Boys to Men the Musical. That would have been my last project outside of the SEA Games ceremonies. From that double-hatting experience, I found it impossible to concentrate on any other project while on the Ceremonies and hence decided not to take on anything else until the Games are over.

you’ve been in singapore’s arts scene for many years. hoW do you think things have changed since you first started?The arts scene in Singapore has always been exciting for me. But at different times, [for] different reasons.

When I first started, it was emerging from a “fringe-like” status. Artists were beginning to give up their full-time jobs as lawyers, teachers, executives… to be full-time artists. That was a truly exciting time.

These days, it is already an expectation that artists are full-time professionals. That allows us to take a committed attitude towards the arts.

We have a massive aerial system that alloWs us to fly performers and aerial props, gorgeous costumes, breathtaking multimedia, 5,000 performers…

New Italian cowboy grub from TuscanyA year after opening, Buttero has a new chef with Tuscan credentials serving authentic Italian cowboy food – Frank Young rustles up a meal and relates the tale

Tuscany, the northern Italian region, has rich history dating back to the Etruscans, whose civilization predates the Roman Empire. It is also home to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the thinkers of the renaissance such as Dante Alighieri, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei and Giacomo Puccini.

With the rich culture and history, you’d think that any association between the region and cowboys is erroneous. It’s not.

From Culture to CattleTo this day, Tuscan cowboys exist and are called “butteri” [plural]. The butteri are caretakers of Maremmana cattle, one of Europe’s oldest breeds, with intimidating horns as long as their heads.

Like the American cowboys, the butteri are equally rugged. From dawn to dusk, hot or cold, these hardened and weather-beaten butteri follow the herd on the trail.

Unlike their American counterparts, however, the butteri eat much better food. Or at least Buttero, Singapore’s Tuscan restaurant at Tras Street, would have us believe.

and-raised buttero from Lucca, Tuscany, says in his own words, “[I] bring the diverse Tuscan landscape of my home country. Flavours from both the land and sea are celebrated at Buttero. I try to highlight the lightness and natural flavours of the freshest produce in my cooking.”

simple is BetterSimplicity is the hallmark of Tuscan cuisine. And why not? The Tuscan region has stretching shorelines for fresh fish and mountainous areas perfect for cattle. The ebb and flow of harsh temperatures make for rugged people and extremely fertile soil worthy of great-tasting agriculture, and mineral-rich grass on which the cattle graze.

When a region produces a bounty of quality ingredients such as the freshest fish,

tasty produce and great meat, an exceptional chef simply needs to get out of its way and let the ingredients speak for themselves!

tusCan Frank and BeansButtero offers simple Tuscan fare unpretentiously served in skillets or pans, that you’d use over a campfire. The Salsiccie e Fagioli (Pork Sausage with Cannellini Beans, $30) is one example. It’s the buttero version of the American “Frank and Beans”, though much better looking and tasting.

White Fagioli beans are mixed with small tomatoes, creating a tangy thick base. Together with this, a large sausage and some sliced, toasted bread is thrown on top, all in the pan. This is the type of comfort food that warms the heart, whether you’re in the CDB or on the ranch.

Though I loved the beans, the sausage was a bit bland. Chef Antonio says the original Tuscan sausages called for the addition of fennel seeds to give them a kick but, apparently, Singaporeans aren’t big on fennel so the recipe has been localised. Too bad — I think that’s what it needs!

making CarpaCCio with a malletIn most restaurants, carpaccio is sliced paper-thin. That may be fine for weight-conscious urbanites but back on the ranch the boys like their Carpaccio ($17) thick!

Hand-sliced raw beef — the thickness of a pad of butter — is beaten with a tenderising mallet until it’s as soft, but not as fatty, as Wagyu. Slices of parmesan are tossed on top.

Unlike other carpaccios, this one isn’t beef-shy. It has the unmistakable richness of raw beef with a savoury cheese flavour.

parmigiani and BurrataThe Parmigiani (Baked eggplant with tomato and Parmasan, $18) was tender, nicely-balanced with the tomato sauce, and had a dash of pesto. The Burrata (a cheese made from mozzarella and cream, $23) was topped with ground truffle and drizzled with truffle oil, with thick balsamic vinegar on the side.

topping it oFF with tiramisuFor dessert, the Tiramisu ($12) is served in a petite mason jar, no bigger than a coffee mug, topped with a copious amount of chocolate chunks. It was a delightful take on the traditional dessert.

Overall, the food was impressive, and I’m looking forward to dining there again soon. For the best value go for the set lunch ($23), which includes soup of the day, salad, main dish, and espresso or lemon and mint iced tea.

Veal & foie gras hot dog and other fun foodIf you’ve been missing the hot dogs ‘with character’ of The Mustard Incident formerly at Tangs Basement, or if you’re a hot dog fan, don’t miss this Rockin’ Diner

You might remember or know of the stall known as The Mustard Incident, previously located at Tangs Basement One (near to where Krispy Kreme is located now). This small eatery had developed a cult following for its hot dogs ‘with character’.

Now, owner Kelly Koh has expanded this concept in a bona fide restaurant known as The Rockin’ Diner, at Club Street. One can expect the same (in fact, more) unique gourmet hotdogs as well as American diner favourites and imported artisanal beer. The good range of beer alone should be a big draw.

Kelly studied in the USA and was smitten by the diners, the music and other aspects of American culture. As such, The Rockin’ Diner is a throwback to his memories of San Francisco and Honolulu.

Hot Dogs WitH AttituDeThe Rockin’ Diner has a full restaurant menu, including savoury items such as his take on the Philadelphia Cheese Steak that includes sautéed peppers and three cheeses and Little Italy’s Killa Lasagne, which is layered with bean-less chilli and also topped generously with three cheeses.

Still, the stars of the show are the hot dogs with attitude. Singaporeans who miss the A&W fast food chain will be elated to know that The Rockin’ Diner serves a heartier version of the Coney Dog.

Meanwhile, the Duck-Can-Fit contains a custom duck thigh sausage topped with garlicky sauce, stewed peppers and bacon bits. The Frankenstein is a patchwork of half a beef Frankfurter and half a custom pork sausage, wrapped in bacon and topped with the house-made bean-less chilli, “hawt” sauce and caramelised onions. It was possibly my favourite on the day.

Foie grAs Hot Dog, Don’t PlAyThe one thing that bowled me over was the Veal and Foie Gras Hot Dog, with purple mustard. I must confess, it didn’t look very appetising to me with the purple mustard drizzled over it. I mean, I want to eat good, solid food, not Playdoh!

Nevertheless, when I took a bite out of it, my eyes opened wide. The flavours were rich and the sensation was luxurious. Do note that the taste may be a bit too rich for some after a few mouthfuls. Jelat, lah.

Still, I’ve been told that the ladies, especially, love it and some will go for more than one!

otHer Fun & interesting FooDApart from “Regular Fries”, The Rockin’ Diner has Chilli Cheese Fries, Spam Fries, Sweet Potato Fries and even Bacon Fries! This is certainly the crowning glory of the side dishes or finger food.

I inquired about how they managed to get the strips of bacon to stay in place, wrapped around the thick-cut fries. Kelly smiled and said others had been asking, but it was a secret. I didn’t want to press in case it was one of those “If I tell you I’d have to kill you” things. With his build, I’m not playing.

For those who love or miss Hawaii, you’ll be surprised to find Hawaiian dishes on the menu such as the Hawaiian Portuguese Sausage, Eggs & Rice or the Loco Moco, a Hawaiian comfort food staple comprising ribeye patties with eggs over rice, and drowned in brown gravy.

While the desserts are not exotic, they are fairly uncommon. The Nutella-misu is a level-up from the usual pick-me-up.

The Banana Creampie looked so sinful yet was very refreshing to the palate and satisfying. I would’ve tried more things if I wasn’t so stuffed.

A different face of ThailandFar from the iconic beaches of Thailand, Chiang Mai adds a different dimension to the Thai experience

Located in the northernmost mountainous area of Thailand, Chiang Mai is cooler than the other tourist spots and there I found many interesting differences from the rest of the country.

Chiang Mai’s independent OriginsOver 200 years ago, Chiang Mai was a separate kingdom. It was populated by the Lannas, who had their own distinct culture and language, known as Kham Muag. They were always under threat from neighbouring Burma, and the Mongols who invaded southern China and the area of what is now northern Thailand.

In 1556, Burma colonised Chiang Mai for the next 200 years. Through a series of political intrigues and battles, the people of Lanna finally overthrew the Burmese and joined Siam (the old name of Thailand).

in hOnOur Of KingsIn a national park at the top of a mountain, there sits a modest stupa with the remains of King Inthawichayanon, one of the last kings of the Lanna people. This is no ordinary park, for it is on Thailand’s tallest mountain, at 2,565m. Formerly known as Doi Luang, it was posthumously renamed Doi Inthanon, in the King’s honour. Though the Lanna monarchy ended in 1939, the mountain remains a proud reminder of Lanna heritage.

A key attraction in Chiang Mai, for locals as well as tourists, Doi Inthanon National Park’s cool, dry climate is a reprieve from the dry and dusty city below. At this altitude, the cooler climate coaxes the Sakura trees within the park to blossom each spring, peppering the clear blue sky with pink petals.

On the main road leading to the summit, there is another attraction – Twin Pagodas, which loom above the surrounding hillsides. The two grandiose pagodas, built in honour of the reigning King Bhumibol and the Queen, serve as a reminder of Thailand’s beloved King and its primary religion – Buddhism.

It’s worth a stop to experience the panoramic mountain range and the beautiful gardens surrounding the pagodas.

KhantOKe Cultural experienCeMost of us have experienced traditional Thai food but Lanna food here is different. The sea is nowhere near, meaning little seafood, its dishes aren’t very spicy and they prefer glutinous rice. One of the must-dos in Chiang Mai is to experience Khantoke dining. The most popular place for this is at Khum Khantoke, a cultural theme park offering traditional dining and dancing amidst the ambience of Lanna architecture. (khumkhantoke.com)

In a U-shaped courtyard, guests sit on a mat floor and are served traditional Lanna fare on a “khantoke”, a pedestaled circular food tray containing smaller bowls of dishes such as pork rinds, fried chicken, boiled vegetables and noodles. Singaporeans who’ve flown SilkAir and enjoyed its on-board dining may find that the Khantoke food doesn’t taste as “rich” by comparison but the cultural experience certainly is richer.

During dinner, traditionally dressed dancers and drummers perform Lanna cultural performances, giving guests a taste of Lanna culture.

Wallet exerCise at the night BazaarThe Night Bazaar, on Thanon Chang Khlan, is probably the only night action in Chiang Mai. It stretches several city blocks and attracts tourists with T-shirts, tribal jewellery, souvenirs, carved soap bars and eateries serving a variety of cuisines. Before what my tour guide calls the “wallet exercise”, make sure you haggle.

For the more curious, check out the massive Warorot Market. You can find what locals buy, drink or eat, including dried insects.

exhilarating adventuresDetouring from traditional tourist attractions, Chiang Mai offers many adventures. Making full use of its hilly terrain, Chiang Mai offers many extreme zip-lining experiences. One of them, called “Flying Squirrels”, has a zip-line course with over 30 zip-line segments, taking several hours to complete. (treetopflight.com)

The course begins at the top of hill and zigzags across the valley, punctuated by several platforms. In one of the stops, the platform is built 40m above the valley. It’s an adrenaline rush to zip across the ravine, avoiding branches and tops of shorter trees.

For a tidy sum, you can even experience a hot air balloon ride. You ascend at sunrise, cruise over the paddy fields and pigs and horses, and land gently on one of the paddy fields below at the end. (balloonadventurethailand.com)
