Blessings to all in our tri-parish family as we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany in this new year. As the Epiphany is the culmination of the Advent-Christmas season we have included in this bulletin a photographic display of some of the highlights of this joyful time of the year. On December 15th our music minister Toby Andrews led the choir in an uplifting and prayerful concert in the Presentation Church sanctuary that led us into the final days of Advent with a peaceful spirit. Also, on December 15th the Saint Anthony Kitchen Ministry prepared and served a special meal for over 100 hungry guests. Scarves, hats and gloves were distributed by the Knitting Ministry, and coats by the St Edward Food Center volunteers. Gian led our youth in Christmas songs at the occasion too. On December 18th the annual Toy distribution occurred at St. Edward Church from the many toys collected from parish-ioners and other donors. Clients were also treated to an extra bag of food to get them through the holidays too. On December 24 our annual Christmas Vigil Liturgy featured our children reverently portraying the Christmas gospel under the leadership of Maryann Pallotta and dedicated volunteers from her ministry.

As we begin a new year, we are so grateful for the many ways God has blessed our tri-parish commu-nity with committed people of faith who serve in important ways in worship, religious education and service to the hungry and homeless. We are so excited in anticipating a new ministry in 2020 at Saint Edward Church with plans to provide a hot meal to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. We also want to extend our prayerful gratitude for the many Christmas greetings and gifts received at this time of year from many of you. Finally, as Father Nolasco prepares to leave for a well-deserved vacation with his family in Colombia may God bless him with a time of rest and relaxation. May God bless us all in this new year with the peace and joy of God’s loving presence among us. Happy New Year to you all!!

2019 SAINT ANTHONY CHURCH

FALL RENOVATIONS UPDATE The major project began earlier in the year with the repair job on the east wall and was continued through the fall with the repointing of the bricks, and waterproofing of the lower walls has been successfully completed. In addition, the stain glass windows on the lower level were caulked and sealed to prevent further water damage. Lombardi Construction Company was the contractor and the their skilled workers performed so diligently to complete the task. Next year they will return to repoint the upper church walls which will finish the job. What remains is the installa-tion of new gutters around the church which need replace-ment. When the weather breaks in the spring new granite curbing will be installed along Pope Street to replace the existing deteriorating concrete ones. Installation of new walkways and landscaping will then follow.

SAINT EDWARD FOOD & WELLNESS CENTER NEWS Wednesday, December 18, the new toys collected through the Holy Name Society efforts were distributed to the clients of the Food Cen-ter to give their children for Christmas, an annual tradition which so many parishioners from Saint Anthony and the Church of the Presen-tation have generously supported. An abundance of toys also were collected at the December meeting of the Renaissance Alliance Lodge of the Order of Sons of Italy in America under the leadership of Presi-dent Joe Calabro which has also been an annual tradition. Other gen-erous individuals have also collected toys for which we are most ap-preciative. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FOOD CENTER IS CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS AND WILL REOPEN ON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8, 2020. THE NEW HOURS OF OPERATION WILL BE FROM 10AM TO 1 PM AND 5 TO 7PM. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

SAINT ANTHONY YEAR-END APPEAL Letters were sent out recently to all registered parishioners requesting the customary annual donation to supplement church expenses. In particular the necessary funds that were expended for the major repairs on the church were higher than anticipated and substantially impacted our savings. Thus it is critical that funds are raised to complete the work. Unfortunately, the Grateful for God’s Providence Campaign proceeds fell well below the goal for the parish resulting in only $150,000 pledged of the $550,000 that the Diocese requested of which 40% will eventually be re-turned to the parish. So there is an ongoing request for contributions. Donations of $250 or more will be recog-nized by an engraved brick in a memorial walkway around the church. Larger donations of $500 or more will be acknowledged on a memorial wall of 12 inch square tiles mounted along the eastern wall of the church. Donors will be contacted early spring with details on the memorials. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

2019 TAX LETTERS

We are currently preparing the end of the year letters for those registered parishioners of Saint Anthony, Church of the Presentation and Saint Edward Churches who use the envelope system (and On Line Giving) to make contributions to the parish. Please note the totals do not include: donations made to Saint Anthony Kitchen Ministries, Saint Edward Food and Wellness Center, Mary’s Meals or the Holy Family Home (those letters are mailed throughout the year), donations to the Bazaar, purchases of raffle tickets and donations to other parish fundraising events. The totals include all 2019 envelope offerings and On Line contributions received in the parish office by January 10, 2020. Any offering received after that date will be applied towards your offerings in 2020. As required, all letters will be mailed by January 31st. Please note the accuracy of the amounts stated in the letters is determined by the information which was completed on the front of each budget envelope. If you use the envelope system or On Line Giving and you do not receive a letter, please call the parish office.

ANNUAL PRIESTHOOD RETREAT FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS, COLLEGE AND POST COLLEGE AGE MEN This annual event will take place on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11, 2020, at the Seminary of Our Lady of Providence. Participants will have an opportunity to be in a quiet atmosphere of prayer and reflection. As the recent Diocese of Providence Pastoral Profile has disclosed, the number of priests in active ministry has significantly decreased from 216 in 2000 to 134 in 2018, and the number may be lower this past year. Every Catholic who is concerned about the future of the church in this Diocese needs to be proactive in encouraging vocations to the priesthood. If you are aware of any young man who you believe would make good candidate please contact Father Ed as soon as possible. Let’s all pray for and encourage vocations!

UPCOMING TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

FOR 2020 AND 2021 Father Ed invites you to join him in a couple of planned trips under Saint Anthony Church for our tri-parish family. The first trip is a Washington, DC tour from May 22-26, 2020, for $899 per person, double occupancy, which includes deluxe motor coach transportation, 4 nights accommodations in a nearby hotel, 6 meals and guided tours to the White House, the National Mall and other places of interest. The trip is offered by RDC Tours. Further information will follow. If interested please call Gilda Del Monico at 232-2251. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land is scheduled for February 3 through 11, 2021, under the direction of Collette Tours. More information will follow and an informational meeting is planned after the holidays.

“Tis the season” of beautifully wrapped boxes encasing treasures specially chosen by the givers. They are meant to express many things, above all love, but also friendship, forgiveness for perceived failures, or just plain joy for the present and the future.

“Tis the season” for receiving gifts, presumably given by loved ones or recent acquaintances, or even perhaps a co-worker from the wider reaches of our “people circle” wishing to acquire or strengthen a relationship. Or they may be expressions of thanks for favors received.

“Tis the season” of a brand new year, its number 2020 often used to define perfect eyesight, thereby giving a hint that this may be the perfect year to look for a “new vision” to permeate our outlook.

“Tis the season” of Winter’s apex, when ever so slowly the daylight lasts longer with each new day, calling for us to live the hope we invest in Spring.

“Tis the season” above all to recognize that Jesus Christ is Himself our greatest gift. His unchanging love for us is no prisoner of time or whim. He is “the Light of the World” for all men and women anywhere and everywhere.

“Tis the season,” finally, of Epiphany, which is Christmas for many Eastern Christians. That marks the time when Christ burst out of the confines of a Bethlehem stable to be a Gift, beautifully wrapped but eager to be opened for all nations.

All of this expanded meaning for the season underscores why we love it as being so special. True, it shakes us up a bit, especially if we have commercialized it, or limited its invitation to love God and our neighbor, or unconsciously made our Christianity into some kind of private possession, not to be shared with people who don’t look like us or speak our language. It tells us each year that we share this blue ball we live in with billions of others, all created by the one God and Father. There are no strangers here.

The poets of our world have a way of stating the truth that makes us pause and rehearse their words with our inner ears. We need them more desperately than we sometimes acknowledge. They open us up on this Epiphany day so that we can ponder and grow. Here is one of them with the lilting name of Edna St. Vincent Millay. This is what she wrote:

“The world stands out on either side, No wider than the heart is wide. Above the world is stretched the sky, No higher than the soul is high.”

Peace to you and yours this New Year of the Lord 2020!

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF SAINT ANTHONY KITCHEN MINISTRY

February 2020 marks 25 years of feeding the hungry at the bi-monthly Sunday meals served in the Parish Center. Begun by members of the Saint Anthony Finance Council as a Valen-tine’s Day dinner for the homeless from the streets of Provi-dence, the effort became permanent under the leadership of Gloria Mamis and her late husband Jerry. Over the years thousands of people transported by rented busses have been served a hot meal by a dedicated group of volunteers, now continued under the direction of their daughter, Michelle Di Iorio. As the anniversary approaches there is a new initia-tive to invite more parishioners to participate in this rewarding outreach. As there is a need to update the records so that a regular schedule can be made according to volunteer’s avail-ability please return the coupon below as soon as conven-ient. Scheduling will begin after the new year and new volun-teers will be personally contacted. Your support is deeply ap-preciated.

(Papa Francisco)
