Travel & CakeHi, I’m Salaal

Hussain and I’m going to use this space to share my favourite

spots in Turkey . While I was there, I got the chance to explore and experience the

diverse culture of the city, so here’s

my scoop!

It was all a dream- Biggie Smalls on Istanblueee’ (Constantinople, Turkey). No, not really. This one is for the ladies, babies with their

mamas, family travel spot; you catch my drift. Take a domestic to Göcek, Bodrum or Marmaris; fly solo, no return. This is where the real summer starts. The kebap is to die for but be careful as they can turn around and kill you! Turkey is one of the few countries where my green passport got me a top notch welcome from the coast patrol whilst my French and Italian comrades had to wait in line; payback served sweeter than baklava.

Food:

The Ottomans were true connoisseurs giving birth to mouth-watering spectacles like the Döner (shawarma), Meze (salad), Kofte, Sis

Kebap and other Mediterranean marvels! Big shout out to Kebap Hospital in Göcek, with meat that’ll get you singing and dancing like Tarkan; best I ever had!

SightS: I am not a tour bus kind of a guy, so I will recommend finding a friend or making one (extremely likely)! Visit the Ortakoy by the Bosphorus, Dolmahbaçe Palace, Sultan Ahmed or ‘Blue’ Mosque and maybe a Turkish coffee at the Ciragan Kempinsikiat sunset. Head south for the beach with my favourite place to stay being the D Hotel in Marmaris or D-Resort in Göcek! Not as crowded as Bodrum or Antalya. Get your tan on; lounge for hours! Adrenaline junkies should not feel left out, water-sports are synonymous with the region having Jet Skiing, Sailing, Wakeboarding, Kite-surfing, Iron-manning and Yachting options all on the menu!! Break a leg! (literally)

If I was ever crunched for time and had to choose between spending time on hair or makeup, I would always choose the latter. That’s not to say I don’t have hair that I can’t do stuff with. I do, but I have never been brave enough to experiment with hair. I usually go for a simple do that looks ef-fortless but simultaneously makes me look like I did make

an effort and just didn’t roll with the hair I woke up with. Recently, silver/grey, lavender and even blue hair has been on trend and my inner unicorn has been dying to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. But I haven’t—I have, what in the hairdressing world, is quite appropriately termed ‘virgin’ hair. Basically, hair that’s never seen colour other than its own. So I guess I’ll have to wait for the silver/grey when it naturally comes. But I know experimenting with hair doesn’t just start and finish with colouring it—there are plenty of cuts and styles to play with. And of late, I have been playing around with a few styles as summer is approaching and that perfect blow-out is just too much for the impending hell that is Pakistani summer. Here’s a list of my favourite hairstyles that are not only cool for the summer but easy as 1, 2, 3:

If there’s one plait that’s easy, it’s the fishtail. I love it because it’s a versatile style—you can go for the whole bohemian/festival vibe by pinning a couple of flowers in it and loosening

it so it looks thicker or make it tighter and sleeker for a chicer take on the plait. I’ve worn it both ways and find that second day, slightly dirtier hair gives more texture and grip to the hairstyle.

Divide your hair into two sections down the back and take an outer piece of the two sections and cross over, add it to the inside of the other section. The piece of hair you cross over becomes a part of the other section. Continue doing this from each side and ensure you hold each piece of hair tightly or it may start to come out once you’ve finished plaiting. Once you’re done you can loosen the plait so it gives the illusion of a thicker and voluminous plait.

The look you want to aim for is more messy ballerina and less strict librarian. The topknot should sit flat on the top of the head and

not too far back on the head. You want to brush all your hair straight upwards and ensure that everything is smooth and tight. Secure the hair with an elastic and backcomb the ponytail for volume and twist the hair into a circular shape around the elastic. Secure the bun

with hairpins and spray with styling spray so the topknot stays put.

I love using my curling wand for creating perfect yet undone waves but when it’s summer, and it’s hot, why can’t you wear a tank top? (love Ross!) Seriously though, when it’s hot, the last thing I want to do is

mess around with a hot hair tool. Instead, I’ll use a sea-salt spray on my damp hair and scrunch up the ends and let it air-dry. You can even twirl the front sections of your hair so when it dries, there’s a natural wave to the front tendrils.

This one is a simple and no-fuss hairstyle. All you need is an elastic, hairspray and a good brush. Gather your hair as you would when making a

ponytail and brush a few times to smooth hair. Tilt your head back as you gather because the hair at the nape of the neck is left tight and without fly-aways. The higher you pull, the more it looks like you’ve just had a face-lift

(no surgery required). Once you’ve made a ponytail, mist hair with strong hold hair spray and smooth down any fly-aways. If you leave a 1-inch strand of hair out before making the ponytail you can wrap that piece around the elastic so it doesn’t show. Channel your inner Kendal with this one.

This hairstyle screams bohemian summer. You will want to twist back a small section of hair from one side of your head and secure it with a

pin in the middle of your head. Do the same with a small section of hair from the other side of your head and tuck it behind the first twisted section and pin it in the middle of your head. This style works great with tousled waves and the messier the better.

For summer nights where you want a sleeker ‘do instead of undone, loose waves, the low chignon is great. You will need a handful of bobby pins and strong hold hairspray to hold the style in place.

Gather your hair and twist it inwards like you’re rolling it into the nape of your neck. Pin it with bobby pins so the hair doesn’t come loose but a few strands of hair is fine and adds to the effortless look. You can even do a side-swept chignon where you gather your hair into a low side pony and roll it into a bun and pin to the side. Again, leave a few tendrils of your hair for a softer look.

Simply pull back your hair and add a folded bandana and tie it around your head. Go for a retro chic/‘50s look with this one!

Pull up half your hair into a top knot and let it sit atop of your head. This top knot can be messy or perfect depending on the look you’re going

for but it is just so darn easy and effortless, literally.

This one is my favourite for when I’m rushing out the door and don’t have

time to dry my hair or do much with it. I wash my hair and embrace the wet look and pull my hair into a messy low braid. I tie the braid off at the base of my neck and let the tail run free so it’s a wet braid and dry ponytail hybrid hairstyle and when I undo the braid I have a natural wave and texture to my hair without applying any heat or styling products!

Translating a literary piece is always a daunting task for two reasons: first, it seeks to preserve its form and second it demands its aesthetical

spirit to be preserved. Translating poetry, out of all genres of literature, is considered to be the most difficult job because to add or lose something during the process is inevitably. Whatever the case may be, it has not prevented the translators to stop their work because they believe that the translations not only bridge the gaps between peoples but also build solidarity and harmony amongst them. To create dialogue with international audience and to celebrate the diversities, Highlight Arts collaborates with artists living in different countries and organises live events to explore alternative stories through direct interaction and shared experiences. It organised same activity in Lahore with collaboration of the British Council and brought eight poets together, four from Glasgow and four from Lahore, at a workshop for translation and collaborative poetry experiments titled `Glasgow to Lahore: New Poems in Translation`. A Change in the Light, an anthology of poems, is the outcome of this activity which includes translations and poems by Jim Carruth, Vicki Husband, Kishwar Naheed, Afshan Sajjad, Gerry Cambridge, Dr. Khalid Javaid Jan, Ali Akbar Natiq and Kathrine Sowerby, and is published by

Lahore’s Sang-e-Meel Publications. These poets, neither fluent in each other’s language nor poetic tradition, spent time together. They spoke to each other, explained their poems and helped out to make other understand the context of their poems and all the words and phrases which have socio-cultural appeal for one society but devoid in another. These long discussions helped them to learn all those terms in order to retain the same spirit in the translated poems. They shed light on the poetic symbolism e.g., the desert is not a barren place but a rich stretch of hope and beauty. Another poet amongst them shared that why he, sometimes, feels like going out to the

fields and scream. This in fact means that if you read both Urdu and English, you might notice some variances, some liberties. Their object wasn’t only to translate the words, but the emotions and feelings and their transformation into other language. Hence, they have tried their best in each one of the poem to be faithful to its spirit and to bring it out in a full-throated voice into another language. There are different issues and themes in the poems included in this book. Domestic issues are prominent in Afshan Sajjad’s poems. The selection of Gerry Cambridge poems are more about natural elements, whereas there is much diversification in topics of Jim Carruth poems. Dr Khalid Javed Jan’s poems are more about social issues and injustice taking place in the society. In short, all these topics, in this small book of 127 pages add different flavour of reading poetry. It is an interesting book which fully engages the reader. The book is edited by Ryan Van Winkle, Ali Kamran and Daniel Gorman. Such books and projects connect people of different region and bridge the gap between them. It also showcases the more diversified Pakistan in the UK and gives readers a chance to read Pakistani Literature. The finest quality of this masterpiece can be judged only by reading it.

Weekend Scouts Javeria ArshadArtist/ Marketing Manager

Location: Karachi

What was the very first piece you created?

It was a black and white, hand drawn, geometric/abstract piece, created using pen on paper, which was used as an event poster for a gig that took place at Papiota Bar in Bucharest, Romania.

Have you ever worked with any musician?

I have been lucky to have the opportunity to work with a range of artists based internationally through Pluie/Noir (a Portugal based label that blends music with art). The collaborations come together from borders far away through one thought or sentiment shared between two artists (one musically and one visually) One of my favorite collaborations would definitely have to be a triptych I created for one of Bruno’s podcasts. He runs the label and is amazingly talented! Another memorable piece would definitely have to be the one I created for a Berlin based producer, Marx Trukkur. My work was converted into a vinyl cover design which was distributed globally, including Tokyo!

What is your work influenced by?

Music! Specially the underground house-y kind (that focuses more on rhythm and beats rather than vocals) has always allowed me to express myself freely, without the restriction of words. It helps me channel my emotions and create pieces that release unspoken sentiments.

Has your artwork caught the eye of anyone unusual?

One of my first few pieces, which was my rendition of the Pluie/Noir logo) was really liked by Bruno. He approached me to do a triptych version that began my journey with the label and paved the road towards developing my artistic expression. It has helped me begin to define my work as an artist, though I still don’t claim to be one!

In a nutshell, how would you describe your pieces?

My work definitely reflects my personality, as it aims to explore a space of emotion and monochromatic infinities of patterns and shapes, seen in structures of different kinds; be it architectural or even biological. My pieces explore the order we all crave to achieve in our modern day chaotic realities.

Page 70: Weekend magzine 22 May 2016

Does your work influence your style or vice versa?

Definitely! Being a minimalist by nature and being a sucker for order and structure, I feel that these traits are intrinsic to both my style and my work. As long as it’s simple and black and white, I’m at peace!

Who would you like to create a piece for and what would it be?

I would love to be able to do a mural at the Alexander McQueen Headquarters! The Soundcloud head office would be cool too!
