7 days with Qyt!

“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. Be positive, have courage and be kind. See you all next week!”

– By Qasim yar Tiwana –

Day:2Dr. Uzma Tiwana Ayub, the eldest of my siblings is a renowned Skin specialist and practices Cosmetic Dermatology. She was in town so we spent a lot of time together. The secret of my forever youthful looks is in the hands of my brilliant sister. She is the most intelligent of our siblings who has done Certifications in Aesthetic medicine from America, Monte Carlo, Italy, Dubai and France. She practices in Karachi!

Day:3 The handsome and very talented Azfar Rehman, who needs no introduction, is like a brother to me. We have been the best of friends since childhood, although he was in Karachi all his life and I was here in Islamabad and then later in Lahore. We make it a point to see each other every time we are in the same city. After all it is 20 years of friendship! He was in town for an interview on ‘Celebrity Lounge’ along with the model Kanwal Illyas who has made her niche in no time in the modelling industry.

Day:1 This week I recreated a shoot I had done sometime ago featuring the female beauty and power icons of our fashion industry. The concept behind this shoot was celebrating the wedding ceremonies that I organised for the movie star Reema Khan, rock star Meesha Shafi and supermodel Mehreen Syed who looked gorgeous in HSY Couture with jewellery by Rema Malik. The shoot was done by Ather Shahzad. Two other big names, Vaneeza Ahmed and Nadia Malik, were meant to be included in the shoot as their weddings were also organised by me but they were travelling at that time.

Day 4The next afternoon I had lunch with my favourite editor Shazay Salahuddin at the Mocca rooftop. We were discussing my next feature and I couldn’t help but share with her how I lost all the contacts in my cell phone. I literally saw the numbers being wiped away from the screen as I held it in my hand! I was horrified but there was nothing I could do except yell ‘STOP, STOP!’. That obviously didn’t help. All I was left with, were the contacts in my favorites list, but since those I already know by heart, it was little consolation. Please be careful about the apps you download and the links you click on because that’s how a virus can attack your phone and if, like me, you don’t have backup, the results can be disastrous.

Day 5:PTV reminds me of my childhood days and when I am working for them I always cherish every moment. I was making the set for PTV and they really know how to get the best out of me! The set was prepared to mark the silver jubilee of the show, ‘Celebrity Lounge’ hosted by none other than Asim Yar Tiwana and Cybil Chowdhry. The set had an oriental regal look with lots of gold inspired by the Mughal architecture. AYT had a specific theme in his mind where he wanted to bring out the royal essence in the show from chandeliers, flowers, crystals and even the music! The classical music track played for this occasion was specially designed for this episode by the melodious Fariha Pervez. Beautiful models wore Umar Saeed with the kundan and polki jewelry complimenting the set very well. It all looked enchanting!

Day 7:What is it with Sunday? The entire week revolves around it but when you finally get to it, the day completely escapes you. Today was a lazy Sunday. Everything was so slow that the sun also seemed to take longer completing its course. I received a call from my best friend Fatima Alvi from NCA. We chatted and complained about the “Nothing Happening Sunday”. Suddenly, we decided to conference call with the rest of our NCA gang and in no time we made plans for lunch at Fujiyama, Avari just like the old days! What memories! So enjoy every day because this too will become a memory.

Day 6:Receiving gifts is always such a wonderful feeling especially when you receive them from someone who you have been a fan of since childhood. I love this sultry piece given to me by my time treasure favourite icon who is always smart, tasteful and on top of my list. Thank you so much, Shahnaz Sheikh, you are a star and will be a star forever.

The Rain inPost card from sPainsPain

Rain and I share an uncertain relationship. I grew up in a city where the rain is charm-

ing. Songs are sung of romances that bloom amidst the monsoons, poetry is written about the magical ‘saawan’. In Lahore, rainfall was celebrated with spicy batter-fried dumplings (pakoras) and sickly-sweet mangoes eaten in musky verandahs. Children played with clothes clinging to their bodies despite the protests of mothers worried sick about the impending ‘zukaam’ which would follow.

Rain in Europe is a different story. It is an unen-thusiastic, lazy and melancholic affair. A nuisance, as most Londoners would complain. And ten years in London have compelled me to align to this view. I have seen a shift in perspective. The rain in Europe is never romantic, it is never magical. But try as I may, I cannot help but treasure the memory of my first Eid prayer in Lahore’s majestic Badshahi Masjid. I can’t recall a single person complain of the rain that day as it fell generously from the skies onto our cold arched backs.

I let out a curse as I checked the weather forecast a week before we set out to our trip to southern Spain. ‘Heavy showers’, I recall my phone screen flashing. We landed in Seville and much to our surprise got crisp sunshine for our first day. Spending a few hours in Seville’s Alcazar Palace and the Santa Cruz quarters, I was struck by the color and intricacy of the mudejar archi-tecture at display. The Alcazar pal-

ace, developed by the Moorish Mus-lim kings, is renowned as one of the most beautiful in the Iberian Penin-sula. In addition to its architecture and history, Seville is famous for its flamenco, tapas bars and orange trees. Our favourite was an intimate tapas bar called La Flor de mi Viña; a great place for some authentic tortillas and live music.

The next morning, we were only forty-five minutes into our journey

to Cordoba that the rains set in. It was the first time in Europe that rain ceased to be a nuisance. Driv-ing past the coastal towns of south-ern Spain, ten years later, I rediscov-ered the magic in rain. At Cordoba, walking to the mosque from the only parking lot in the city, the six of us arrived drenched from head to boot. I had read that Iqbal had visit-ed this mosque in 1931, and struck by it’s grace, penned an eight-stan-za poem as a tribute to it’s beauty. It is apparently one of the few occa-sions that Iqbal has praised art or architecture in his poetry:

‘O, Mecca of art lovers,You are the majesty of the true te-net.You have elevated AndalusiaTo the eminence of the holy Ha-rem.’

For us, the less eloquent, we consumed at the Mosque of Cor-

doba’s grandeur with ignorant si-lence. The mosque is testament to the religious changes that Cordoba has experienced through the years; retaining the architectural charis-ma of the Muslim reign in Cordoba, only enriched by the demure cathe-dral that sits within its heart. They say that when the Muslim rule in Cordoba ended, King Ferdinand III, despite many attempts, was unable

to destroy the place of worship due to its sheer beauty.

Our final stop in Spain was Gran-ada, home to The Alhambra; a palace and fortress constructed for the last Muslims emirs of Spain. Granada’s appeal also lies in the Alcaicería; a ba-zaar which hoards a variety of Arabic craftwork, lamps and souvenirs. Be sure to pick up some fajalauza tiles (traditional local painted ceramics). A small Moroccan community in Grana-da have also opened up many restau-rants; having had our fill of Spanish cuisine, we ventured to a worn-down Moroccan restaurant for some delec-table tagine and cous-cous.

As for the Alhambra: if you were to see one palace and one palace alone in your life, let it be The Al-hambra. The myriad of Arabic in-scriptions and painted tile panels coupled with manicured courtyards and fragrant orange fields make this UNESCO World Heritage site one to behold. The rain was at its fiercest as we walked through the Alhambra but palace’s splendour made it difficult for us to notice our drenched socks and puddled shoes. And as I stood outside the final pal-ace before we returned to the exit, I did think of the rainy Eid morning spent once upon a time outside an-other palace back home.

Who is your style icon?i don’t think i have a specific style icon. for me it’s about comfort and juxtaposing things that i Wouldn’t associate With a specific individual, maybe merging tWo into one look? oliver tWist With lil-Wayne vibes.

the very first piece you created, Would you still Wear it?yes, i Would digitally project that doodle on myself and Walk around.

if your pieces Were a person, hoW Would you describe them in 3 Words? i’m Waiting for some self-conceited, self-proclaimed-innovator to respond to this With “me, myself & i”. actually- i take that back, that’s my response too. no shame.
