REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD A s we begin our season of Au- tumn, workers here at home and throughout the world are har- vesting the fields to provide food for our tables. How appropriate in this Sunday’s Liturgy while Jesus calls us to personal integrity: “There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me“, St. James reminds us that as Jesus’ disciples we must be committed to seeking justice for all God’s chil- dren. As we celebrate this Eucha- rist, fulfilling our duty to worship God, let us renew our commitment to fulfill our duty of justice toward our neighbor. We continue to listen to this sec- tion of Mark’s Gospel in which Jesus teaches about discipleship. He calls his disciples to serve, teach and even challenge others, but not to judge their motives. The community of disciples, the Church, must judge right from wrong and prophetically produce the truth. In the Book of Numbers, Moses far from object- ing, rejoices that God’s Spirit has been bestowed outside his inner circle. Jesus too teaches us to rejoice whenever we find goodness, healing and compassion. Rather than judging others, we should examine the quality of our com- mitment. A crucial aspect of which, St. James tells us, is found in our love of neighbor. WEEK XXVII OF ORDINARY TIME October 7, 2018 REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

O n this Respect Life Sunday, we re-new our pledge to preserve and pro-

tect the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. Gathered as Jesus’ disciples, let us ask God to make us convincing witnesses to the sanctity of human life and to joy of faith in Jesus. As part of a network of human relationships we are called anew to hon-or these relationships with our spouse, our children, our neighbors and friends, knowing that God is always a part of them.

Today’s second reading begins a two-month series from the Letter to the He-brews. Jesus is presented as our leader and brother whose sacrificial love opens

for us the way to salvation. In the Gospel Jesus reflects on the beautiful example of sacrificial love, the lifelong com-mitment of marriage, the foundational relationship of hu-man society, the faithful love between a man and a wom-an. It is the living image of Jesus’ love for his bride, the Church. “The two of them become one flesh...therefore what God has joined together no human being must sepa-rate”.

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY: This observance emphasizes concern for all human life, especially that of the unborn, the elderly, persons with disabilities, the terminally ill and others whose lives are threatened. We pray for the sanctity of all human life as this year’s theme reminds us: “EVERY LIFE CHERISHED-CHOSEN-SENT”. In the words of Mary’s apparition at Guadalupe “You who are my messengers, in you I place my absolute trust”. When we follow the Church’s teachings

on life it leads to human flourishing for individuals, families and societies.

CALL FOR REGISTRATION

THIS WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 29/30 WE WILL WELCOME TO OUR PARISH FR. JOHN KIR-WIN WHO WILL SPEAK AT ALL THE MASSES ON BEHALF OF THE ORGANIZATION UNBOUND. SOME PARISHIONERS ARE ALREADY INVOLVED IN THE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY OF THIS PROGRAM.

UNBOUND provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the

Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics,

Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elder-ly in 18 developing countries since 1981, empowering them to make choices in their lives,

live with dignity and teach them potential. Unbound partners with families living in pov-

erty, empowering them to become self-sufficient and fulfill their desired potential. Un-

bound’s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or

aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encour-ages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much needed

nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood

programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the

dignity of every person in their local community.

Please join me in welcoming Father Kirwin to our parish.
