SAINTS OF THE WEEK:

Saints Jacinta

& Francisco

Marto

February 20

In 1917, three Portuguese shepherd children received 6 monthly apparitions of Our Lady near Fatima, Portugal.

Up to 90,000 people gathered for the last one on October 13th which included the miracle of the "dancing sun".

Mary asked them to pray the rosary every day to obtain world peace at the time when the world was at war in Europe. They were also asked to pray for sinners and the conversion of Russia. Both Jacinta and Francisco died at an early age of influenza, but they kept their promises. The third child, Lucia dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun and died in 2005. Pope Francis canonized Jacinta and Francisco on May 13, 2017 on the 100th anniversary of the first apparition.

Weekly Message on the Readings for the Presentation of the Lord

The LITTLE CHURCH TEAM NEEDS YOU!

Take this opportunity to share the gospel stories with our younger parishioners. Please contact Alma (971-241-1268) or Fr. Kiko if you would like to volunteer.

Last week’s Liturgy of the Word reminded us that we were God’s “salt” and “light” in our world. Today’s message instructs us how to nurture those qualities that lie buried within us. From the Book of Sirach to the Gospel of Matthew, comes Divine Guidance on how to fully live in proper relationship with God and each other. These two states of existence require proper introspection and constant care. Observing the law can bring order; however, only righteousness can transform individuals into the beings that God intended. Discovering and nourishing the heart and spirit of man with the grace of God will ultimately complete the transformation of human nature into that eternal and divine creature originally designed by God.

In the Book of Sirach, the importance of man’s decisions and the Laws of God’s are discussed. This passage reveals that following the laws of God will lead a person to a healthy and righteous existence. This path, however, requires Wisdom in that observance and that can only come from God. Reason, therefore, concludes that acting unjustly and choosing sin will bring the opposite results which produce destructive fruits and misery.

This calling for lives lived through Wisdom is also the topic for the second reading. In Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, Paul is careful to differentiate between the wisdom of the Greek world and the Wisdom of God. The apostle to the Gentiles, poignantly illustrates that Hellenistic wisdom is a false wisdom. In fact, Paul argues, if the world’s wisdom was truly wise, the leaders never would have crucified Christ. Rather, true Wisdom is found only in God and this Spirit scrutinizes all. St. Paul adds that this Wisdom is found in the very depth of God, Himself, and is available for those who follow Christ.

Jesus’ analysis of his mission is coupled with his view of justification and optimal relationship with God and man. In today’s Gospel by Matthew. Jesus states in the very beginning that he has come to fulfill the Law. Throughout his ministry, Jesus acts in a manner that makes some think he disregards the Law or alters it. This is completely false. The Messiah, Jesus claims, is bringing things to their fullest

measure. Using hyperbole, today’s Gospel reveals the importance of righteous relationships for followers of Christ – relationships between God and each other.

Jesus teaches his disciples that the Law exists to assists man. During the time of Jesus, the Jewish community had transposed the importance of the

Law with mankind’s actions towards God and his neighbor. This alters the very nature and purpose of the Law. The community leaders emphasized the fact that Jews were to observe the Law at the expense of the human person. It was more important not to work on the Sabbath and rest while you watched another person suffer instead of intervening. Christ explains that individuals had to look within themselves to determine what action would or would not demonstrate their love for God and their neighbor, the most important law. Drawing upon the Wisdom of God, the correct course of action would be revealed. Furthermore, he reiterates that it is better for an individual to lose a body part than use it in a sinful manner, i.e. cut off your arm if you desire to steal. Jesus employs examples of common sins and their real effect upon individuals if committed, i.e. look lustfully at a woman is committing adultery with her. Clearly, Jesus redirects the focus on sin. He meticulously illustrates that sin is found within the individual not from without. The truly justified man will recognize his own faults and ask for God’s grace to rectify the situation. This introspection will foster true Wisdom and guarantee forgiveness from both God and neighbor.

Holy Mother the Church wishes us to redirect our own focus and quest for righteousness. She encourages us to examine our own faults so that we can receive Wisdom and healing from God and through the sacraments – especially the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Today’s liturgy summons us to the fountain of Mercy, Jesus, where our future and fulfillment rests. As Christians, our careful examination of ourselves can be fruitful if we embrace God and neighbor in love through the sacraments and self-denial remembering that Jesus came “not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it”.
