Digital Photography 

Session A: July 5th­15th

Course Description: 

 

An introduction to digital photography and workflow, covering fundamentals such as manual camera 

settings, studio lighting, tethered capture, post­production and printing. Students will be encouraged 

to experiment with image sequencing, appropriation as well as digital manipulation as they work 

towards a group exhibition on the final day of the session. 

 

Materials Students MUST Bring: 

 

Camera ­ a DSLR with manual settings (ISO, aperture and shutter speed) and RAW file capability 

Memory Card ­ 8GB or higher is best 

Portable Hard Drive ­ mac compatible 

Epson Premium Luster Paper ­ 8.5 x 11, 100 sheets, 1­2 boxes 

Notebook and Pen or Pencil 

 

  

WEEK 1 

 

Tuesday 7/5 

 

9:00 – 10:00 Check­in, introduction to the program and short tour of campus, Broad Art Center 

auditorium, Room 2160E 

10:00 – 11:00 Tour of studio and building facilities, review rules, Lab Supervisors give demonstrations 

11:00 – 12:00 Syllabus review, icebreaker: names paired with gestures or “never have i ever” 

12:00 –1:15 Lunch (Students get BruinCards, and “Material Kits” at LuValle if needed) 

1:15 – 3:30 Camera Overview and Demo 

3:30 – 3:45 Snack Break 

(Daily snack is offered compliments of the Summer Art Institute) 

3:45 – 5:30 In Class Assignment: Aperture, shutter speed and ISO, review daily studio clean­up 

procedure 

7:00­ 10:00 Homework : Shoot 36 photo an object or person in a variety of different situations or set ups, be sure to play around with the depth of field (aperture settings) in MANUAL mode, note your 

aperture, shutter and iso settings for each photo and keep your subject matter consistent. 

 

 

Wednesday 7/6 

 

9:00 – 11:00 Studio Time: Intro to Adobe Bridge, file retrieval and management 11:00 – 12:00 Artist Talk (all students attend in Auditorium – Broad 2160E) 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 3:30 Studio Time: RAW file editor, white balance and basic Photoshop 3:30 – 3:45 Snack Break  3:45 – 5:30 Studio Time: In­class assignment ­ making selects and basic file editing 7:00­ 10:00 Homework: Finish basic edits begun in class  

 

Thursday 7/7 (Late Studio Night) 

 

9:00 – 12:00 Studio Time: Review images, narrow selection to ten 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 2:15 Artist Talk (all students attend in Auditorium – Broad 2160E) 2:00 – 4:45 Studio Time: Printing Demo, how to make a contact sheet, Work in printlab to print contact sheet and two of your final images 4:45 – 5:15 Dinner / Snack Break  5:15 – 7:00 Studio Time: Informal pin up of first images  

 

Friday 7/8 

 

9:00 – 12:00 Studio Time: Lecture ­ The World as Subject: An overview of photographers who draw inspiration from the lived experience and whose styles can range from the documentary to the abstract (Atget, Brassai, Walker Evans, Laszlo Moholy­Nagy, John Divola, Danny Lyon, Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Nan Goldin, Taryn Simon, etc) 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – Meet at Broad Lawn to prepare for Museum Trip  1:15 – 4:30 Museum Trip to Getty Center (all students attend) 4:30 – 5:30 Museum Assignment: We will go on a visit to the Arts library to find supplementary material about an artist or work you encountered at the Getty. You will write a brief, page response comparing and contrasting what you saw at the museum and catalog images from books in the library. 7:00­ 10:00 Homework: Tape over your viewfinder and photograph using only manual exposure and focus settings. Aim to be as quick and impulsive as you can; take a lot of pictures! Edit down to 20 and be sure to think about your sequencing, bring a contact sheet to class.  

 

Saturday 7/9 

 

9:00 – 12:00 ­Lecture:   Makin’ Pictures: An overview of photographers who primarily work in a studio setting or with existing material to ‘construct’ their images (Julia Margaret Cameron, Barbara Kasten, 

Sarah Charlesworth, Man Ray, Thomas Demand, Cindy Sherman, Charlotte Cotton’s photography is magic.) 12:00 –1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 4:15 Studio Time: Basic Studio Lighting and Shooting Tethered ­ portrait and still life, Studio Clean­up 4:15 – 4:30 Snack Break  4:30 – 5:30 Art Movie Screening in Auditorium (all students attend Auditorium – Broad 2160E) 7:00­ 10:00 Homework: Taking inspiration from one or more of the artists shown to you in the last two days, make a series of photographs (between 3 and 5 would be good) that you think sums up or speaks to their work. Write a paragraph about your thought process while shooting these images and how you went about making them. Bring full­sized prints to class on Monday morning.   

WEEK 2 

 

Monday 7/11 

 

9:00 – 11:00 Critique of weekend assignment 11:00 – 12:00 Artist Talk (all students attend in Auditorium – Broad 2160E) 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 3:30 Studio Time: Demo ­ Scanning film, Advanced Photoshop 3:30 – 3:45 Snack Break  3:45 – 5:30 Studio Time: Re­edit images or shoot in the studio 7:00­ 10:00 Homework: Start thinking of what kind of work you’d like to make for the show, write a paragraph description of your project, bring the proposal to class the next day.  

 

Tuesday 7/12 

 

9:00 – 12:00 Studio Time: Independent work time, individual meetings to go over homework 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 3:00 Museum Trip – Hammer Museum (all students attend) 3:00 – 5:30 Museum Assignment: Using found images (scanned, photographed or taken from the web) make a digital collage appropriating the work or techniques of one of the artists encountered at the Hammer.  7:00­ 10:00 Homework: Print your digital collage for class the next day 8.5 x 11”  

 

Wednesday 7/13 (Late Studio Night) 

 

9:00 – 12:00 Critique: digital collage assignment. Brief overview of InDesign and Artist Books (Paul Graham, Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel’s Evidence, zines) 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 2:15 Artist Talk by Summer Art Institute Instructors (all students attend in Auditorium – Broad 2160E) 2:00 – 4:45 Studio Time:  Use InDesign to make a sequenced PDF (min 8 pages.) You can use existing work, or make something just for it and email it to me when you’re done. 

5:15 – 7:00 Studio Time: Independent studio time, images for exhibition and final critique 4:45 – 5:15 Dinner / Snack Break  Homework: Work on your final project.  

Thursday 7/14 

9:00 – 12:00 Studio Time: Review and share PDFs, preparations for final Critique 12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 3:30 Studio Time: preparations for Final Critique, pin up work 3:30 – 3:45 Snack Break  3:45 – 5:30 Final Critique: with Instructor and Guest Faculty  7:00­ 10:00 Homework: Last minute touches before the exhibition!  Friday 7/15 9:00 – 12:00 Bring artwork to gallery, install exhibition, Install  12:00 – 1:15 Lunch 1:15 – 2:00 Pack artwork to be shipped home, final studio clean­up 2:00 – 3:30 Final Reception held at New Wight Gallery ­ all students, parents / guardians, faculty, staff and friends are welcome to attend!
