•Sometimes we forget where we placed a certain file. That’s okay, we can search for the name of that file, program, or folder using the Search tool.

•This activity will show you how to use the Windows Search methods. This table shows the various search methods.

Performing a Search

Step 1: Click the start menu, in Windows 7, a Search for files and folders box is located at the bottom of the menu.

Step 2: Begin typing the name of the file or folder you are searching for. As you type, choices will appear in the menu above you.

Step 3: The results are organized by type. In the above search, any related documents, outlook items, music files, or other files, are grouped together.

Step 4: If you know what folder your file might be in, you can save yourself time by searching within that folder.

Step 5: Open the Explorer tool and select the documents folder.

Step 6: The top right of the window contains a Search Documents bar.

Step 7: Begin typing the name of your file sample.

Step 8: Notice that as you type, the contents of the folder are filtered and the parts that match your search are highlighted. Once you see the file that you are looking for you can stop typing.

Step 9: If you are still unable to find your file in that folder, you may want to expand your search.

Step 10: Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the Search Results List. Under Search Again In: there are four choices for you to expand your search. You can search in Libraries, Computer, Custom, or Internet.

Note: Older versions of Windows have their own Search Window that comes up. You can use this window to narrow the parameters of your search. For example, you can choose a folder to search or a type of file to look for.

o Click Libraries to search across every library.o Click Computer to search across your entire computer. This is the way

to search for files that aren't indexed (such as system or program files). However, be aware that the search will be slower.

o Click Custom to search specific locations.o Click Internet to search online, using your default web browser and

your default search provider.
