HISTORY

Paris is more than 2,000 years old. Gaulsof the Parisii tribe settled there between250 and 200 BC and founded a shing

village on an island in the river that isthe present-day Ile de la Cité -- the center around which Paris developed.

Known as Lutetia in ancient times, Pariswas conquered by Julius Caesar in 52 BC.In 987, High Capet, Count of Paris, be-

came king of France, and under his suc-cessors, the Capetians, the city's positionas the nation's capital became established.Often characterized as spirited and rebel-lious, the people of Paris rst declared

themselves an independent commune inthe 14th century.

The storming of the Bastille in 1789 wasthe rst of a series of key actions by the

Parisian people during the French Revo-lution.In 1871, during the Franco-Prussian War ,

the city was besieged for four months untilFrance surrendered. After German troopswithdrew, French radicals briey estab-lished the Commune of Paris.

TRANSPORTATION

The Paris transportation network is verydiverse and exists literally over manylevels. The city's buses, trams, Métro,Autoroutes, trains and planes together allserve to maintain a high level of connec-tivity between Paris's many different dis-tricts and beyond.

The Metro and Tramway, most of the Busand a few sections of the RER are run bythe RATP (Régie Autonome des Trans- ports Parisiens), the government-subsi-dised company whose jurisdiction coversall transport touching the Parisian Cap-ital. The rest of the RER, as well as theTransilien, are run by the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français),the state-owned train company whose railnetwork covers all of France.

CUISINE

Paris’ culinary reputation has its base inthe diverse origins of its inhabitants. In its beginnings, it owed much to the 19th-cen-tury organisation of a railway system that

had Paris as a centre, making the capital afocal point for immigration from France’smany different regions and gastronomicalcultures. This reputation continues throughtoday in a cultural diversity that has sincespread to a worldwide level thanks to Par-is’ continued reputation for culinary nesse

and further immigration from increasinglydistant climes.

THEATERS

Theatre traditionally has occupied a large place in Parisian culture. This still holdstrue today, and many of its most popular actors today are also stars of French tele-vision.

Some of Paris’ major theatres include Bo- bino, Théâtre Mogador, and theThéâtre dela Gaîté-Montparnasse. Some Parisian the-atres have also doubled as concert halls. Many of France’s greatest musical leg-ends, such as Édith Piaf, Georges Bras-

sens, and Charles Aznavour, found their fame in Parisian concert halls. Legendaryyet still-showing examples of these are LeLido, Bobino, l’Olympia and le Splendid.
