Part –I

AFP-Surveillance

• The SPCR in Nairobi received an email from the KEMRI lab

on 25th January at around 12PM, informing about the isolation

of a new PVs from an environmental sample from

Mogadishu. All the 5 samples were collected from ‘KAWMA'

sewage site, in Hamerewoini district in Banadir region in

Central zone. This sewage site was established on 20th

September 2017. 15 samples were collected from this site

since establishment and a PV is isolated from the samples

collected one week apart starting from 21st of December with

ID Codes:

ES/SOM/BAN/HMW/KAWMA-1/17/009

ES/SOM/BAN/HMW/KAWMA-1/17/010.

ES/SOM/BAN/HMW/KAWMA-1/17/011.

ES/SOM/BAN/HMW/KAWMA-1/17/012 and

ES/SOM/BAN/HMW/KAWMA-1/17/013

Isolation of new PV2 from an Environmental Sample

• Samples were referred to the CDC for sequencing on 25 January 2018 and are still pending.

• The mOPV2 first round was implemented from 10th to 13th December and targeted 726,699 children under five years of age in all accessible districts of Banadir, Lower

and Middle Shabelle regions.

• Post campaign independent monitoring result showed 96%, 97% and 98% in Banadir, L/Shabelle and M/Shabelle respectively

VDPV2 isolated from ES

5 samples sent to CDC for sequencing

mOPV2 second round campaign

The second round mOPV2 campaign conducted from 9 January – 01 February 2018 in all 29

accessible and partially accessible districts of Banadir, Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle

targeting 726,000 under 5 children. Final report preparation is onprogress.

Post-campaign independent monitoring and LQAS started on 03 Feb. 2018 and will continue until

06 Feb 2018.

Preliminary data collected through the ODK showers most districts have achieved more than 90%

administrative and intra-campaign independent monitoring coverage

All vials distributed to vaccinators (Unopened/Opened/Used) were collected and no single vial

reported missing far mOPV2 Round 2. The DPOs received their clearance letter of handing over

mOPV2 Vials to cold chain team.
