John Stewart, who has lived inSpain for the last nine years, is agreenkeeper as well as groundsmanfor La Liga football team, RealSociedad. He lives with his wifeMaria, and also his two children,Erin and Ian. He is brother to Tom(owner of Book a Piper), Colin(owner of Kiss Discos) and Fiona(owner of Stewart HighlandSupplies) and son of Tom and thelate Elizabeth.

The piper has a friend who livesclose to where golf star SeveBallasteros lived and suggested he put his nameforward to play at the funeral. He was given thephone number of Ivan Ballesteros, Seve’s nephewand manager, the night before the funeral andIvan said he thought it was a great idea butwanted to check with Seve’s brothers. He calledJohn back and said to be at Seve’s house for10.30am the following morning.

John was so nervous he never slept a wink thatnight. He had to make the 90-minute drive from

his home in Vitoria to Pedrena. After speaking with the family, it was

decided that John would play AmazingGrace inside the church, but he wasalso asked to play them down to thechurch as it represented how well lovedSeve was in the UK.

John said it was a fantastic experienceand a great honour, although he didhave some mixed emotions after seeingthe large screens outside the church, and watching the hundreds of peoplebehind him along with all the famousfaces. If he’d thought more about it he

would never have been able to play.John is no stranger to being in the lime-light as

he was the resident piper at the US Open in NorthCarolina in 1999. He played the golfers off eachnight and also entertained the hotel guests. Johnalso played at the memorial service held forPayne Stewart when he died a few months afterwinning the US Open. He performed AmazingGrace whilst walking up the fairway to the spotwhere he made his winning put.

John Stewart, who comes from Laurieston, Falkirk never met his hero, but gave him thesend-off he deserved. Seve Ballesteros’s was loved all over the world, so when John gotthe chance to lead the funeral procession, he was a very proud man.

2011 is the 30th Anniversary year of theopening of Strathcarron Hospice. It’s beenan incredible journey over the years as thehospice has gradually developed itsservices.

The Hospice opened its doors on 21st April1981 but the idea of a hospice and theplanning started back in 1975 when DrHarold Lyon met with a few friends toconsider whether their vision of “professionalexcellence and Christian compassion in aplace that would be a home from home” wasachievable.

The founders identified a number ofprinciples which still hold true today, including: good symptom control; goodcommunication and openness between thepatient, family members and staff;reassurance to reduce fear and anxiety;spiritual help and an environment that ishomely, friendly and relaxed.

StrathcarronHospice always envisagedhaving a multi disciplinary approach thatwould include doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers and spiritual advisors. All ofthis has been achieved gradually over the last30 years and they continue to develop tomeet new challenges and needs.

There have been many challenges in the lifeof the Hospice — the original staff wereadvised that there was only enough money topay them for three months — how many of uswould feel brave enough to leave secureemployment for these terms?

Over the years the annual income andexpenditure have risen significantly from

£79,776 in its first year to its current level of£5,285,000 and this allows more and morepatients and their families to be cared for.

Originally the Hospice cared for between 40and 50 patients at a time in day care, throughhome visits and in the ward. In 2011, we nowexpect to directly look after 350 patients atanyone time in the hospice and importantly inpeople’s own homes. Indirectly we support amuch larger numberof patients throughconsultations in hospitals and care homes, through telephone advice, participation incare planning meetings, and in runningcourses for clinical and care staff from a widerange of organisations.

INVENTING LANDSCAPE: AN EXHIBITION

At Callendar House this summer we havedecided to take a closer look at landscape.Come along to our new exhibition InventingLandscape and discover a new way to look atthe world.

Have you ever wondered about thelandscapes around you — the views youphotograph when you’re on holiday or theones you pass every day and never give muchthought to? Why do we have “mostphotographed views”, is it because they areuniversally beautiful, or because for a fewhundred years that is what we have beenconditioned to believe is beautiful? Canpeople alter the landscape to make it respondto the fashion of the time?

This is an ambitious exhibition with its rootsin the notion of the picturesque — defined byThomas Gilpin in the eighteenth century as‘that kind of beauty which is agreeable in apicture’. The exhibition uses a variety of

images and objectives to explore the conceptof landscape - old postcards of famous beautyspots; photographs and archives relating tothe history of Callendar Park, a designedlandscape; objects from Falkirk Museums’stores and art works from the wonderfulcollection at the University of Stirling.

And, if you’re keen to explore your landscapefurther, there will be a series of events run inconjunction with our education team in thenew heritage garden which will open duringthe summer. There will also be a specialevening ‘wander though the past’ of CallendarEstate with archaeologist and local historianGeoff Bailey on 20thJuly.

Inventing Landscape runs from 28th May –16th October 2011. Admission to CallendarHouse and the exhibition is free. Tickets forevents or workshop activity can be bookedthrough the Steeple Box Office by calling01324 503798. Charges may apply.
