J01 ; ;

Professor Clark, elected a Fellow of th eRoyal Society in 1928, won many distinctions inthe world of chemical research ; he was Presidentof the Canadian Chemical Society in 1937 and amember of the National Research Council of Canad afrom 1937 until 1943 . During the Second World Warhe and his staff concentrated their efforts upo nthe type of research required by the allie dgovernments in those critical years .

Professor Clark's reputation as a chemis trests solidly upon an impressive list of scholarl ypapers reporting his own research and that of hi sstudents .

Professor Clark has been described as areserved man ; at the same time, he was active inthe affairs of the faculty and served on a numbe rof committees, in particular those dealing withacademic standards . In the depression of thethirties, he was one of the leaders who insisted ,against powerful opposition, upon the maintenanc eof the University's academic integrity . A kee nplayer of bridge, he was also a formidableantagonist at tennis ; in his later years, h eplayed golf well enough to enjoy the sport an dthe exercise . His conscientious feeling for thewelfare of the University as a whole made him apopular figure among his colleagues . Many aformer student will recall delightful evening sspent at his home, for one of his enthusiasm swas the frequent entertainment of undergraduate sand graduates ; it was an activity that he performe dwith zest and skill . Off the campus, he was amember of Ryerson United Church and for eigh tyears served as Chairman of the Board of Unio nCollege of British Columbia, during that tim etaking the lead in the accumulation of funds forthe College .

Until the last year of his life Professor Clarkcontinued his association with the University, an dto many members of the staff he recalled th eearlier and, to some of us, more heroic days o fthis institution, when there prevailed amon gstudents and faculty alike an intimacy andcomradeship of which we have been deprived, insome measure, by growth . Robert Harvey Clarkwas one of that extraordinary group of notabl eteachers who built the foundations of thisUniversity so enduringly .
